President Trump is always the safest person in every room in which he stands regardless of where he sets foot in the world, whether it’s Washington DC or the Middle East, for example.
That’s the biggest perk of being president in the 21st century. You and yours are always safe.
However, something creepy managed to happen this morning. A driver in 45’s motorcade was briefly detained for carrying a gun.
The man was tasked with driving a van of reporters and photographers.
Here’s the scoop…
From Daily Wire:
Agents with the Secret Service’s presidential protection unit have detained a driver of a vehicle in President Trump’s motorcade after they found a gun in his baggage.
Before the motorcade was allowed to depart, all drivers were replaced, according to a report from a journalist with the president in Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s hotel in Palm Beach, Florida.
Washington Times has more:
The driver was scheduled to be operating one of the press vans. The Secret Service said the man was a staff-contracted driver, and that a background check determined that he owns the gun legally.
“The incident was investigated by the Secret Service and our partners at the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and resolved,” the agency said in a statement. “At no time was any Secret Service protectee in danger or impacted. All Secret Service security measures worked.”
The pool report stated, “White House staff said all drivers were replaced after the incident. When press loaded back into vans, driver was being questioned by an officer.”
Here’s a statement from the Secret Service:
Secret Service statement regarding events in Palm Beach, Florida February 19, 2018. The Secret Service can confirm that an individual serving as a staff contracted driver was briefly detained by U.S. Secret Service personnel and other law enforcement officials today. The individual was found to be in lawful possession of a prohibited item (firearm) outside the secure area at a Secret Service security screening checkpoint. The incident was investigated by the Secret Service and our partners at the Palm Beach County Sheriffs Office (PBSO) and resolved. At no time was any Secret Service protectee in danger or impacted. All Secret Service security measures worked.
The incident came as the White House said the President is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system for gun purchases, less than a week after the Florida school shooting that killed 17 people. Trump’s resort is less than 50 miles from where the massacre took place.
Reporters in the press pool said the handgun was discovered by Secret Service officials as they searched the individual’s bag before the motorcade was scheduled to depart for Trump’s golf course. The search took place outside club grounds in a nearby parking lot.
