Earlier today we covered the latest update in what’s in all likelihood just the “fake news” story of the week, this one being pushed by Democrat Rep. Frederica Wilson, who claimed that Trump told a Gold Star Widow who lost her husband in last week’s attack in Niger that he “knew what he signed up for.” The man killed was Sgt. La David T. Johnson.
Trump personally denied the allegations, calling them a complete fabrication, and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly gave an emotional statement Thursday that he was “stunned” by Wilson’s remarks, which he claimed were bogus. Kelly told reporters he personally encouraged Trump to echo words Gen. Joseph Dunford offered to Kelly when his own son was killed in Afghanistan.
And what was Wilson’s reaction? To laugh, and claim she’s a “rock star.”
So if your suspicion was that she’s just an opportunist who knows the media will run with any story portraying Trump in a negative light, congratulations, you’re correct.
In response to the controversy, Gold star widow Natasha De Alencar released the audio of the phone call she had with Trump in April about the death of her husband, who was killed in Afghanistan. “I am so sorry to hear about the whole situation. What a horrible thing, except that he’s an unbelievable hero,” Trump told her in the call about her husband Army Staff Sgt. Mark R. De Alencar, which the Daily Caller reported on.
“If you’re around Washington, you come over and see me in the Oval Office,” he said. “You just come over and see me because you are just the kind of family … this is what we want.”
“Say hello to your children, and tell them your father he was a great hero that I respected,” Trump said. “Just tell them I said your father was a great hero.”
Does this like a man who would tell a grieving widow her husband “knew what he was signing up for?” I’ve seen some crazies on my social media (and Wilson herself!) try to play the race card here (as Sgt. Johnson and his widow are black), but so is Ms. Alencar.
Sorry Rep. Wilson – we’re just not buying your narrative.
