I’ve always maintained that if we were to see large scale gun control in America, it won’t come in the form of sweeping legislation, which the American public (and particularly the gun owning public) would never allow. Rather, the strategy of those looking to implement strict gun control will be to administer death by a thousand cuts. Propose one “common sense” measure here, and another there, and eventually you have a cumulative number of gun laws slowly chipping away at Second Amendment rights.Comedian Adam Carolla has made the argument much better (and much more hilariously) than I ever could have (slight language warning):
While the “slippery slope” argument is a logical fallacy by definition, it’s no secret that there’s no shortage of liberals who would ban all guns overnight if they could, and no number of “common sense” regulations granted to them will ever be enough. Nancy Pelosi even admitted as much.
According to Fox News, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that she “certainly hopes” a ban on “bump stocks” will open the door to additional gun control actions.
“They’re going to say, ‘You give them bump stock, it’s going to be a slippery slope.’ I certainly hope so,” she told a reporter at a news conference.
The reporter had asked her about whether she was concerned that Republicans would make the “slippery slope” argument on “bump stocks,” used by the Las Vegas gunman to fire more rounds with a semi-automatic weapon.
Pelosi said Democrats still want to push for enhanced background checks on gun purchases, which in itself is a “compromise” from even harsher restrictions favored by the party.Rich Lowry responded on Fox Business Network that a legislative ban on “bump stocks” is not guaranteed to happen, but is the only “plausible” action to come out of the Republican-controlled Congress.
Well thanks Nancy – for confirming what we knew all along. As more and more gun control measures are conceded to the Left, they’re continue to move the goalpost when it comes to what “common sense” gun control is.
