We have been truly focused on Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria their effects and recovery efforts. Also, this week we’ve witnessed the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, topping the Islamic jihadist attack of the Orlando Pulse night club. But there is still a global evil, a danger that exists. We were somewhat reminded last week and weekend with the return of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and his call for more violence against Westerners and coalition nations. That call was immediately answered with Islamic terror attacks in Edmonton, Canada and Marseille, France, where in the latter attack, two women were killed; one had her throat slit.
And now, we, America, have a reminder that the global Islamic jihad still exists…and is still deadly.
As reported by AP, “U.S. officials said three U.S. Army special operations commandos were killed Wednesday and two others were wounded when they came under fire in southwest Niger.
The officials said the two wounded were taken to Niamey, the capital, and are in stable condition. The officials were not authorized to discuss the incident publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity. The officials said the commandos, who were Green Berets, were likely attacked by al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb militants.
In a statement, U.S. Africa Command said the forces were with a joint U.S. and Nigerien patrol north of Niamey, near the Mali border, when they came under hostile fire. Africa Command said the U.S. forces are in Niger to provide training and security assistance to the Nigerien Armed Forces in their efforts against violent extremists [Islamic terrorists, jihadists]. The White House said President Donald Trump was notified about the attack Wednesday night as he flew aboard Air Force One from Las Vegas to Washington. Trump was in Las Vegas meeting with victims of Sunday night’s shooting massacre, along with first responders and doctors.”
Isn’t it interesting that the AP report reflects the absurd atmosphere of political correctness in that it could not refer to these al-Qaida in the Maghreb (North Africa), AQIM, as Islamic terrorists? They’re still using the vanilla term of “violent extremists.” Well, these are Islamic terrorists and they’ve taken the lives of our warriors. First, this occurred in Niger, not Nigeria. We’re well aware there’s an issue with the Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram, in Nigeria. AQIM has been freely operating in the country of Mali and the country of Niger sits between Nigeria and Mali, it’s a critical linchpin in stemming the spread of AQIM, Islamic jihadism, into sub-Sahara Africa.
What MUST happen for our military is that we conduct a threat analysis by geographic combatant command areas, such as AFRICOM, CENTCOM, PACOM, EUCOM, SOUTHCOM. When that is completed to assess the current and future threats, we then need to match our military capability and capacity enabling us to thwart this threat. This is how we rebuild our military capacity in a threat-based manner, not based on an arbitrary budget number. AQIM grew into existence over the past eight years of an Obama administration that aided and abetted its conception and growth through the ill-conceived actions in Libya. And now, as always, those chickens are coming home to roost — sadly, three U.S. Army Special Forces, Green Berets conducting a FID (Foreign Internal Defense) mission were killed.
My question is…what combat multiplier resources were available to these Warriors? God bless them, and their families, and this has to end. First, let’s start referring to these barbaric savages as they are.
