When you’re a businessman, you’re always looking for ways to do things more efficiently and with less expense. It’s a necessity for survival whether your budget is massive or minuscule.
When you’re a career politician in Washington, however, you just keep right on spending and spending and spending — with little or no regard for budget, cost or efficiency.
The difference is one of the key reasons Americans elected Donald Trump last November — to bring some business savvy and common sense to an out-of-control budget situation that is burying our children and great-grandchildren beneath an insurmountable mountain of debt.
Today, we’ve learned that a key member of Trump’s cabinet and inner circle is in hot water for wasting taxpayer money. He may even be on the chopping block.
Trump has discovered that Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price has been chartering and flying around in expensive private jets — when cheaper commercial flights were available.
The prez is none too happy about it.
Yahoo! News reports:
“President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is “not happy” with Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price following reports that Price used a private plane for official business.
And Trump says he let Price know it. Asked whether he’s planning on firing Price, Trump responded: “We’ll see.”
Trump spoke to reporters Wednesday as he departed the White House for a trip to Indianapolis to sell his tax plan.
Price said Saturday he would stop flying private planes on official business while an internal review of the flights is being done. He’s also said he welcomes the review.
Trump’s comments came as a congressional committee launched a wide-ranging examination of air travel by high-ranking Trump officials following reports that Price used pricey charters when cheaper commercial flights were available.”
Imagine that — senior government officials being expected to fly commercial (a.k.a., the way the rest of us do) and being held accountable for spending taxpayer dollars if and when they don’t. When’s the last time that happened?
It’s becoming clear that Trump has put Washington — all of Washington — on notice that the new sheriff in town has certain standards and expectation, and that accountability for how our money gets spent is one of them.
Who knows, there may yet be a drain spout in the middle of this swamp after all.
