For politicians, there are many situations that cause instant dread. Whether it’s a staffer making embarrassing mistakes with your official Twitter account, or having a gaffe in front of a live audience, no politician wants to be forced to explain preventable mistakes. Of all the gaffes, perhaps none are more dreaded than being caught on a hot microphone during an unguarded private moment.
Sadly, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s name can be added to the list of politicians that have been caught on the dreaded hot mic.
While Schumer’s comments weren’t as controversial as Obama’s 2012 promise to Russia, or the summertime conversation between Senators Susan Collins and Jack Reed, they could prove to be just as eye-opening.
From Fox News:
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was caught on a hot mic Thursday saying, “He likes us. He likes me anyway,” about President Trump.
The comments came shortly after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s floor speech. The mic caught Schumer speaking with staffers and asking if there was “anything new?”
With President Trump trying to push for tax reform, many are speculating he will work harder to court Democrats in the coming weeks. For their part, Democrats have been attempting to influence Trump on budget matters — even striking a budget-related deal with the president last week.
For Schumer, his unguarded comments seem to indicate he believes he has gained favor with the president. Whether or not that’s true will be put to the test during the next few months of tense negotiations.
