As y’all know, I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m so proud to call myself a native Atlantan and Georgian. Being from a place so rich in history and achievement was a driving force in my life. And there are times when I harken back and remember some memorable moments such as selling Cokes at the old Grant Field and Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, being there when Hammerin’ Hank Aaron hit 715 off LA Dodgers pitcher Al Downing. The first time I climbed Stone Mountain. Or being there for the opening of the new Atlanta Airport, Hartsfield International…driving up I-75 the first time after it was opened all the way to Chattanooga. And there are so many historical black community traditions, like Auburn Avenue and the Butler Street YMCA where I learned to swim, play basketball and box.
I remember going over to the Atlanta University campus which housed those venerable institutions such as Morris Brown, where my aunt graduated. Clark, Morehouse, and Spelman Colleges, where my sister-in-law Joann graduated.
But it appears traditions have no meaning, especially when it comes to the ideological agenda of the progressive socialist left. And it has hit home, my hometown, at the nation’s oldest historical black college for women, Spelman College.
As reported by Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “Spelman College president Mary Schmidt Campbell announced [last] Tuesday the all-women institution will accept students, starting next school year, who “consistently live and self-identify as women, regardless of their gender assignment at birth.”
The college sent a letter to students, faculty and staff explaining the new policy. The Historically Black College & University (HBCU), located near downtown Atlanta, had been considering such a policy since the prior semester, according to news accounts. A task force of students, faculty, staff and alumnae looked at the potential changes, Campbell said.
“In adopting this admissions policy, Spelman continues its fervent belief in the power of the Spelman Sisterhood,” the letter said. “Students who choose Spelman come to our campus prepared to participate in a women’s college that is academically and intellectually rigorous, and affirms its core mission as the education and development of high-achieving Black women.”
The letter also contains frequently asked questions about the policy. Transgender students who identify as men will not be admitted, Spelman explained. Housing accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Students who transition to male after they’ve enrolled at Spelman will still be awarded a degree. Spelman, one of the nation’s most prominent single-gender institutions, has about 2,100 students. Spelman’s decision was a hot topic for alumni and on social media. Some blasted the college while others called the change progress. Agnes Scott College, located in Decatur (Georgia), adopted a policy in 2015 that accepts students who were assigned female at birth as well as those who were assigned male or female at birth who now identify as female or transgender. Bennett College, the nation’s only other all-female HBCU, located in Greensboro, N.C., also allows transgender female students.”
I find it interesting that the left has changed the language from “being born” to “being assigned” your gender at birth. I’m wondering who the secular humanist left believes “assigns” our gender? Of course they don’t recognize the gift of God called life. This is just another example of how the liberal progressive left is replacing God and believes man can determine and correct what God has created. As well, we’ve moved from the scientific understanding that being born a certain gender cannot be altered, changed or adjusted by the whims of man. Gender dysphoria is a mental condition, not a sense of self-identification.
What I found interesting is the statement by Spelman College President Mary Schmidt Campbell that “Spelman will continue its fervent belief in the power of Spelman sisterhood”. A fella masquerading as a woman ain’t a “sista.” if anything, he’s a really confused fella. And no amount of political correctness and redefinition of genders will rectify that delusion. There’s no amount of hormonal therapies that can change DNA — another false belief of man.
So, returning back to the issue for Spelman, does this mean that a fella self-identifying as a woman can now be the president of Spelman College, or professor of women’s studies? It appears that’s the logical next step. And actually, can we still refer to Spelman, Agnes Scott, or Bennett Colleges as all-female institutions? It would appear not, and please, spare me a failed lesson in human biology if you try to convince me that a fella “self-identifying” as a woman is a woman.
Right across the street from Spelman College is the alma mater of many great black men, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mayor Maynard Jackson, Morehouse College. Morehouse is the nation’s oldest historically black college and university that is all male. I suppose we can expect to read a letter from their president allowing a similar policy change. So a woman self-identifying as a fella can apply there as well…this is the slippery slope as Robert Bork titled his book, “Sloughing Toward Gomorrah: Modern Liberalism and American Decline.”
There are quite a few prominent black pastors in the Atlanta area. One just has to wonder what they think about these decisions. Do they side with God and His creation of man and woman? Or do these pastors now believe we as humans can determine our gender? This isn’t some easily disregarded policy decision; this cuts to the core of who we are and the faith of this nation. If we’ve come to the point that the progressive socialist left can just redefine history and our biological construct, then man is moving towards replacing God. And if that be the case, then the secular humanist left will determine there is no Creator, and therefore our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness is controlled, granted and refuted by them.
Spelman College is no longer a bastion created to educate and produce the cream of the crop black American women. It’s now a relic, a memory, something of the past that has been fundamentally transformed into something it wasn’t intended to be. You may say the only thing constant is change, but there’s something to be said about tradition.
There’s also something to be said about common sense, and a person with a certain type of plumbing is either a guy or a gal… determined by our Creator, not by the delusion of humans.
