Our thoughts and prayers go out to those in the destructive path of Hurricane Irma. And we have not forgotten the epic floods and devastation of Hurricane and Tropical Storm Harvey. It’s been quite a few years since massive storms have hit Florida — 2004-2005 were the last series of severe storms. We pray all remain safe, and recovery can begin as soon as possible. However, there are vital issues we must address that have an even longer term concern for our nation.
As reported by Breitbart, “Republicans slammed the Friday announcement by President Donald Trump’s justice department that it will not investigate the official who allegedly oversaw the IRS’ secret sabotage of Americans’ civic groups before the 2012 election.
“This is a terrible decision,” said a statement from Texas Rep. Kevin Brady, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees taxes and the IRS.
The scandal has been underway since 2013 when the IRS admitted that its officials had slow-rolled and blocked routine requests for tax-exempt status from conservative Tea Party groups while giving quick approval to liberal groups. That obstruction of tax-exempt status made it difficult for the conservative groups to raise funds needed to campaign against then-president Barack Obama during the 2012 election.
Under Obama, the IRS and the justice department stonewalled and blocked subsequent investigations, via many tactics such the destruction of email records. But the September 8 letter from the Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ Justice Department said it would not even reopen the investigation because officials require “proof beyond a reasonable doubt that a government employee intentionally discriminated against an applicant for a tax-exempt status based on viewpoint.”
You are probably already aware of this story; we covered it here yesterday. But here are my concerns and issues.
First of all, going into this weekend we had a major storm that was about to hit South Florida, and we’re recovering from another. We also have the opening weekend for the NFL, and college football Saturday.
I find it truly deceptive that the Trump administration DOJ would release this information on a Friday. Everyone knows if you’re trying to hide something, you do a Friday news dump hoping it will be lost in the weekend shuffle, dismissed by many trying to enjoy the weekend, and forgotten about by Monday morning. Needless to say, this was purposeful and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who I believe is a good man, possibly was conflicted in releasing this statement and decision. Of course, with the ongoing attention to Hurricane Irma, the chances of this Friday decision being remembered is slim to none, which is very disconcerting as it leads one to assess intent. And why, why would the Trump administration seek to bury this very important decision to so many? So many who gave their electoral patronage to President Donald Trump?
After the incredible electoral success in 2010 that saw the largest number of House seats — some 63 — won by the GOP, the grassroots constitutional conservative movement known as the Tea Party had a target on its back. They had done the unthinkable, stood up to the Washington DC political elite structure and won. They’d created a principle-based movement that threatened President Barack Obama as he was coming up on his reelection bid just two years later. There was no way Obama was going to leave it up to chance, so what’s the best way to defeat a grassroots movement if you’re a sitting president? As well, the GOP establishment realized they wanted no more of these pesky “Tea Party” congressional members upsetting their apple cart. Therefore, the most tyrannical government agency was unleashed upon the common American man and woman.
These were people who believed they had a First Amendment right to freedom of speech, freedom of expression, to assemble, and to petition their government for redress of grievances. Yes, they did, but since their expression, speech, and assembling did not please the masters of DC, they had to be crushed. And so the dark specter of the IRS descended upon the everyday American. We saw the testimonies before the House Committees. We saw the letters sent to these grassroots organizations. It’s just unconscionable that a violent group dressed in black with hoods and masked faces like Antifa or the hate-filled anti-law enforcement group Black Lives Matter can thrive…but grassroots organizations believing in the U.S. Constitution and fiscally-responsible principles of governance would be assailed.
And based on Attorney General Session’s statement, nothing shall be done about it.
Here’s the rub. We heard all the campaign chanting and rhetoric about “lock her up”. It appears that the Trump administration is no different from any other. It’s not concerned with justice, just a proliferation and continuation of the corruption of the elites. So many felt that the wrongs of the Obama administration would be corrected — hardly. Many of the Obama personnel are still in place, and nothing has been done about major Obama policies like Dodd-Frank, the Iran nuclear agreement, or the IRS. As a matter of fact, the same liar, John Koskinen, who held the position of head of the IRS under Barack Obama, is still there. Lois Lerner who pleaded the 5th, is still getting that big time taxpayer-funded pension. Hillary Clinton is still walking around peddling her pathetic literary endeavors. And the folks who elevated Donald Trump to the presidency just got another slap in the face.
Don’t worry, President Trump will issue some tweet or run out and hold another campaign rally, and folks will show up. There will be no big, beautiful wall, and Mexico certainly isn’t going to be paying for it…if you haven’t noticed, they’re pushing for it to be included in our federal budget — meaning your taxpayer dollars.
Yes, there have been some good executive orders such as reduction of regulation, but if you put aside the emotions, you’ll find a Trump administration woefully lacking, and not owning up to its stated promises. I want to know why the Muslim Brotherhood hasn’t been declared an Islamic terrorist organization 00 that can be done via Executive Order.
I guess my point is this: Attorney General Session’s announcement just goes to show that the swamp is not being drained. And no, I don’t celebrate President Trump’s sit-down acquiescence with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi.
President Trump, like Faust, made a deal with the devil, and he will pay for it with his political soul by December. We don’t need a three-month debt ceiling increase; that is insidious. We should have passed the funding for the storm recovery and assistance, clean.
Now of course, if you speak frankly, and unemotionally, about President Trump you get demonized, but I would happily put my constitutional conservative credentials up against anyone’s. There’s no way I would allow for the corruption that has become the IRS and certainly, Koskinen would have been gone day one…chances are he would have quit before a swearing in date. There’s no way Susan Rice would still have a security clearance; she would be under investigation. Eric Holder would be also for Operation Fast and Furious.
No one is above the law; that would be clearly understood. But sadly, it appears that’s not the mantra of the Trump administration.
