We now know the 2013 IRS targeting scandal will never catch up with the agency’s former head, Lois Lerner.
Lerner famously pleaded The Fifth when summoned before Congress to testify on the scandal, and eventually resigned from her position not long after. It wasn’t for another three years that the IRS came clean, releasing a list of 426 conservative organizationsfor which they stalled granting tax exempt status (more than the 298 groups initially believed to have been targeted). During her final three years heading the IRS, only one conservative group had been approved for non-profit status.
Aside from being held in contempt of Congress and losing her job, she faced no legal consequences for her actions, and even Donald Trump’s Department of Justice doesn’t seem to care.
According to Fox News, the Trump administration has no plans to charge former IRS official Lois Lerner over her role in the Tea Party targeting scandal, the Justice Department said Friday in response to calls by Republican lawmakers to revisit the case.
In a letter to the lawmakers, the Justice Department said that “reopening the criminal investigation would not be appropriate based on the available evidence.”
Despite numerous hearings and inquiries into the tough treatment of conservative groups by the tax agency during the 2010 and 2012 elections, the Obama Justice Department had announced in 2015 that no one at the IRS would be prosecuted. They said at the time that investigators had “found no evidence that any IRS official acted based on political, discriminatory, corrupt or other inappropriate motives that would support a criminal prosecution.”
The Republicans who requested a fresh look at the case were disappointed in the Trump DOJ’s response.
In 2014, the Ways and Means Committee voted to refer Lerner to the Justice Department for possible criminal prosecution.
Republicans on the committee said she may have violated the constitutional rights of conservative groups, misled investigators and risked exposing confidential taxpayer information.
As you would assume, the conservative blogosphere is not happy, commenting on the matter with renewed calls to “lock her up.”
Lois Lerner is a criminal who weaponized the IRS
She belongs behind a prison cell.

There's a better case for prosecuting Lerner than there is Hillary but here we are. #LockHerUporNot

Very disturbing that DOJ and Sessions are not taking any action in the IRS scandal. Message to all bureaucrats: Do your worst. #loislerner

Even President Donald Trump had a comment to make about Lerner’s actions – four years ago.
House GOP better get its act together.Defund ObamaCare. Out negotiate on debt ceiling. Form commissions on Benghazi & IRS. No excuses!

Indeed – there truly are no excuses for this. You just have to wonder, what changed his mind?
