JUST IN: After Harvey, Trump does something no president has ever done

With much of the Houston area still trying to recover from disastrous flooding, liberals have been busy making the tragic event into a political narrative. Who cares about an American city drowning in water, why did the First Lady wear heels?

Sadly, some of the narratives that formed around Harvey weren’t as innocuous. Some — including a Politico cartoonist and a college professor — believed Texas was being dealt “karma” for voting Republican.

For others, Harvey was a chance to divide the victims by race. And of course, liberals never let a natural disaster go to waste without screaming about climate change.

Despite all of this, a truly American story has been playing out in Houston. Thousands of volunteers have poured into the city to assist victims, neighbors are helping neighbors, and online charities are raising millions of dollars for victim relief.

For his part, President Trump saw these acts of kindness first hand. While visiting Texas, he praised the relief efforts taking place there.

However, the president wasn’t content to stop there. To assist with the fundraising effort, the president is donating $1 million of his own money to assist victims.

From CNBC:

President Donald Trump has pledged $1 million of his own money to Harvey relief efforts, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at a press briefing Thursday.

Trump has not decided which organization he will donate to. The spokeswoman said Trump specifically told Sanders to ask journalists at the briefing for suggestions since they have been reporting on groups and their relief efforts.

“As I said, he’ll pledge probably $1 million of his own personal money to help the people of both Texas and Louisiana,” Sanders said.

The move comes as Trump readies to visit the area again:

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will travel to Texas and Louisiana on Saturday, Sanders said. The two visited Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday. Vice President Mike Pence toured damage in Rockport, Texas, on Thursday.

The details of the Trumps’ upcoming trip are still being finalized, Sanders said. The tentative plan is for the first couple to travel to Houston, Texas, and Lake Charles, Louisiana, she said.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the president has been generous with his money since taking office. Since the campaign, he followed through on his promise not to take a salary, instead donating it to various charities every few months. Now, he’s giving his biggest donation yet to the city of Houston.
