Waiter Nathan Bergeron was having a normal workday at the On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina in Tennessee when he says he got an unpleasant surprise from customers he was serving.
A couple dining with their teenager left him zero tip on their bill of $47 with a written explanation that “We don’t tip white ppl! LOL” on the top portion of the final receipt.
Of course, no report on the incident we’ve seen mentions the race of the customers, but one can only assume they weren’t white — unless that’s how they demonstrate their privilege.
The waiter has taken it all in stride. “I’m not going to let this bring me down,” he told NBC4. “I love what I do. I get to meet new people every day and interact with people from all different backgrounds. I treated that table no differently from anyone else. Obviously in this business, we don’t always get a tip. You just move on about it and go onto your next table.”
Per BizPac Review, According to his friend, Brandy Sciara, who shared a picture of the note on her Facebook page, Bergeron depends on those tips and lives in his car outside of the restaurant.
“He’s a good person. He goes to work, does his job,” she said. “When I saw the comment I cried. I was always told, ‘If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it at all.’”
However, there is one bright spot out of all this. After his story went public, a GoFundMe page was set up for Bergeron to help him get a place to live other than his car. As of Sunday afternoon, $7,415 had been raised, well exceeding the goal of $500.
So the mean-spirited people who left that note may have ended up giving Bergeron the biggest tip he’s ever received. Nice to see that good does triumph after all.
