CNN host surrenders

CNN host Alisyn Camerota wants to be a public figure — without having to hear anything negative from the public.

She penned an op-ed Wednesday morning on CNN’s website announcing her “breakup” with Twitter, after deleting the account she’d used since 2009.

The op-ed takes the form of a letter, first relaying the story of when she created her Twitter account: “[you would] surprise me with flower emojis and thoughtful comments. Back then, it was still thrilling to check in with you every day to see how many new followers you’d brought me. Those were the days.”

“But something’s happened to you. You’re a shadow of your former self, the one I was first attracted to. It’s no fun to be with you anymore. You’ve become mean and verbally abusive. In fact, you gross me out,” she continued. “You’re a cesspool of spleen-venting from people who think it’s acceptable to insult other people in public and anonymously.” She then went on to write about how she decided it would be best to quit Twitter entirely rather than endure further online harassment.

“I don’t like thinking of people using you, typing away with nothing but a keyboard and a chip on their shoulder, but that’s the company you’re keeping. You’re hanging out with people who find satisfaction spewing vitriol, people who spread racism, misogyny, and anti-Semitism.”

Or as Kathy Griffin would say: “they broke me.”

One can only wonder how after walking the Earth for 51 years, Camerota is only now realizing there are mean people on the internet, and it truly is amazing what qualifies as “harassment” nowadays. Any public figure in the political sphere is going to receive countless angry messages — and they can simply mute or block those users. That isn’t an option for actual victims of actual harassment.

Meanwhile, the remaining billion users of Twitter rejoiced:
