It may seem like ages ago, but CNN was once the leader in cable news. However, years of ratings struggles left the network with some tough choices going into the 2016 election. In response, the network went all in to support the candidacy of Hillary Clinton. Their coverage of the election was so one sided, many began referring to the channel as the Clinton News Network. However, their efforts fell short when Donald Trump emerged victorious.
Since failing to get Clinton elected, the network has plunged itself into negative coverage of the Trump presidency. For awhile, the plan seemed to be paying off. CNN’s coverage of the Russia “scandal” earned it huge ratings, bringing in some much needed cash with it. However, the ratings came at the expense of the the network’s already suffering journalistic standards. The once proud channel was quickly becoming fake news.
Of course, the charade couldn’t go on forever. After several months, CNN had failed to prove a connection between Russia and the Trump campaign. But like an addict, they couldn’t stop running with the story 24/7. Predictably, the desperation led to some major lapses of judgement by their editors. In the aftermath, the network has been mired in multiple controversies.
Needless to say, CNN has seen better days. Yet if they thought their struggles were over, more bad news was waiting for the fledgling network. Amid all the controversy, CNN’s rating have taken a stunning downturn.
From Bizpac Review:
Following multiple blunders, scandals and missteps, the network saw its ratings slip to number 13 in cable television in the last week.
Measuring average audience size for June 26 to July 2, TV Newser posted the rankings Thursday showing CNN’s drop to 13th place while Fox News reigned at number one followed in second place by MSNBC.
The network pulled in only 711,000 viewers on an average day during the period, compared to 1.82 million for Fox News and MSNBC’s 1.34 million. According to analysis by The Daily Caller, CNN has been declining from the sixth to the thirteenth position over the past month, while Fox News has held its number one spot for past five TV Newser rankings. MSNBC has moved between the second and third positions for the same time period.
The low ratings could be the result of multiple blunders by the network:
Three of the network’s journalists were forced to resign after CNN retracted an article falsely alleging President Trump’s adviser Anthony Scaramucci had links to Russia. Undercover videos released by James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas revealed a CNN producer admitting that the network’s coverage of the Trump-Russia narrative has been “mostly bullsh*t” and another video captured Van Jones admitting the Russia hoax is just “a big nothing burger.”
From airing a fake National Enquirer cover of Ted Cruz and his wife, to the latest scandal as the network sparked a firestorm of criticism for appearing to blackmail the social media user who created a parody video of a WWE fight between Trump and CNN, the self-proclaimed “most trusted name in news” paid for its decisions in its ratings.
Sadly, CNN attempted to trade journalistic integrity for better ratings. However, it appears months terrible reporting have resulted in neither.
