Well, this has to stink for Team Sanders. Poor Bernie couldn’t catch a break from the Democrat Party (of which he’s not a member anyway) during his presidential campaign, and now some little financial shenanigans his wife allegedly pulled while she was president of Burlington College in Vermont may have left a little stain — or shall we say a “bern?” – on Bernie as well.
As we recently reported, from 2004-2011 (when she was ousted), Bernie’s wife Jane O’Meara Sanders held the position of president at Burlington College – which became a point of interest after that college closed in May 2016 (while Bernie was still in the race) due to “crushing debt,” incurred over Mrs. Sanders’ tenure. She accumulated a $10 million debt, most of which was attributable to the school purchasing a new campus in 2010.
Mismanaging a college is hardly illegal, but it’s doubtful whether or not Jane actually believed the school would be able to pay back the money borrowed, and because of that, as The Hill reported, Federal investigators are looking into allegations that Jane Sanders falsified loan documents while she served as the president of Burlington College, according to multiple reports.
Now prosecutors might also be looking into allegations that Sen. Sanders’ office inappropriately urged the bank to approve the loan. Oops.
As a result, the couple are hiring some heavy-duty lawyers to help defend them against the charges.
CBS News reports, Burlington attorney and Sanders supporter Rich Cassidy has reportedly been hired to represent Sen. Sanders. And high-profile Washington defense attorney Larry Robbins, who counseled Libby “Scooter” Robbins, former Chief of Staff for the Vice President, is protecting Jane Sanders.
Brady Toensing of Burlington, the man responsible for the claims filed to the U.S. attorney for Vermont, was a chairman for the Trump campaign in his state.
“I filed a request for an investigation in January 2016 and an investigation appears to have been started right away,” he said in an email to CBS News. “It was started under President Obama, his Attorney General, and his U.S. Attorney, all of whom are Democrats.”
“My only hope is for a fair, impartial, and thorough investigation,” Toensing added.
Poor Bernie. Everyone’s got knives out for him. And he was probably looking forward to peaceful retirement at his $575,000 lakefront vacation home, but that may just have to wait.
