Here’s some newspeak for you: “law-abiding illegal immigrants.”
New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio takes credit for using the nonsensical term in his defense of his city’s sanctuary status. In fact, he’s “distressed” that “non-criminal” illegal aliens are being arrested. According to the Daily Caller, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday that it is “distressing” that non-criminal illegal immigrants are being arrested.
Being in the country illegally is considered a civil offense. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Wednesday they had arrested 41,318 illegal immigrants in the opening months of the Trump administration — 10,800 of whom were non-criminals.
In New York City, ICE arrested 156 non-criminal illegal immigrants, more than double the amount for the same period last year. De Blasio said in a radio interview with WNYC that “it’s very distressing, Brian, to hear that ICE is picking up people who are law abiding and contributing to the community.”
“That’s only going to undermine the relationship between our immigrants and our police and our government in general,” the mayor said. “That’s not going to make anyone safe.”
It’s clear that his definition of “law abiding” differs from that of the average American, given that in the past he’s made it clear that even an illegal who was caught drunk driving would be shielded by his city’s sanctuary policy – so long as they don’t injure anyone. Perhaps he doesn’t realize the purpose for enforcing laws against drunk driving, even if the drunk driver didn’t hurt anyone, is to deter the practice before they inevitably do.
If New York City does have its federal funding revoked for maintaining their sanctuary status, as President Trump has threatened, they’ll lose $7 billion in taxpayer money.
Hopefully they keep their status – and lose their funding. With sky-high deficits inherited from Barack Obama, any excuse to save $7 billion should be pursued.
