Anthony Weiner appears in court today; plans to plead…

Anthony Weiner is set to have his day in court today, and the word is, he’s going to plead guilty to a single charge of transferring obscene material to a minor. Weiner surrendered to the FBI this morning.

His sentencing will be up to a judge, but the offense carries a potential jail sentence of zero up to ten years. Most likely, he will have to register as a sex offender.

Just to recap, per the New York Times (so it must be true), The federal authorities have been investigating reports that, beginning in January 2016, Mr. Weiner, then 51, exchanged sexually explicit messages with a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina.

Mr. Weiner began exchanging messages with the girl when she was a high school sophomore and that the messages indicated that Mr. Weiner knew that she was underage.

The story first appeared in the Daily Mail newspaper, which did not identify the girl, and said she did not want to press charges “because she believes her relationship with Weiner was consensual.” The paper said that she and her father agreed to be interviewed “out of concern that Weiner may be sexting with other underage girls.”

Of course this wasn’t Weiner’s first “outing” shall we say.

You’ll recall Weiner was forced to resign from Congress in 2011 after an explicit Weiner picture became public from his Twitter account. He initially said he was hacked (RUSSIANS no doubt) but then admitted he’d sent the image and had explicit exchanges with at least six other women (none of whom were his wife).

He tried to run for mayor of New York in 2013, but that effort collapsed when even MORE explicit messages popped up.

And last August was basically the final straw, when new suggestive messages emerged, including one with an image of Weiner’s crotch as he lay next to his four-year-old son. His wife, Huma Abedin, could no longer stand with him, and to add injury to insult, his laptop was seized by the FBI who found thousands of emails they wanted to examine as part of their investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server to send classified information.

Of course we know how THAT story ended…at least for now.

Weiner will have a very tough time of it if he ends up in prison. It’s a rough place for a sex offender apparently. In that case, the punishment fits the crime.
