“The tide has changed.” “There’s a new sheriff in town.” “Meet the new boss.” The number of tread-worn sayings to describe U.S. and worldwide sentiment concerning Donald Trump’s version of the war on terror versus Barack Obama’s are limitless. The U.S. military’s dropping of a GBU-43, the largest non-nuclear weapon in our bombing arsenal, onto a known ISIS stronghold in Afghanistan made headlines worldwide and eliminated any ambiguity about the differences between Trump and Obama.
Our reporting yesterday unearthed a truth that during the Obama years, U.S. pilots on bombing runs were routinely returning to their airbases with 75 percent of their ordinances because the Obama administration blocked them from dropping the bombs. Some pilots were even saying, “We can’t get clearance even when we have a clear target in front of us.”
The reasons the Obama administration gave for not clearing the bombing runs included Obama’s insistence on a zero-civilian casualty rule.
Well guess what we’re now learning about the results of this week’s MOAB (the GBU-43)? Yahoo News is carrying a report from Afghan officials on the ground conducting inspections in the blast zone — the body count of confirmed dead ISIS fighters is approaching 100, the body count of civilian casualties sits at ZERO:
“KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The number of militants killed in an attack by the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the U.S. military has risen to 94, an Afghan official said Saturday.
Ataullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor in Nangarhar, said the number of Islamic State group dead was up from the 36 reported a day earlier. A Ministry of Defense official had said Friday the number of dead could rise as officials assessed the bomb site in Achin district.
“Fortunately there is no report of civilians being killed in the attack,” Khogyani said.
The increased death toll in Nangarhar was announced as officials in southern Helmand province reported at least 11 civilians were killed and one wounded in two roadside bomb blasts overnight.”
So there actually were civilian casualties – some innocents were killed, not by the U.S. MOAB but by roadside bombs set by terrorists killed by the MOAB! In other words not bombing the terrorists results in more civilian deaths than bombing and taking them out does, Obama!
The story continues:
“The strike using the Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, or MOAB, was carried out Thursday against an Islamic State group tunnel complex carved into the mountains that Afghan forces had tried to assault repeatedly in recent weeks in fierce fighting in Nangarhar province.
…Current President Ashraf Ghani’s office said Friday there was “close coordination” between the U.S. military and the Afghan government on the operation, and they were careful to prevent any civilian casualties.”
It can be done. Our intelligence combined with the sophistication of our weaponry can be very precise, very accurate and used to take out the enemy while at the same time protecting the innocent. What it comes down to is a matter of leadership and allowing our military to do what it does best – engage and destroy the enemy, not sit in gender-identity sensitivity classes all day.
Yeo there’s a new sheriff in town.
