We’re long past the point where we need to start calling so-called “gun free zones” out for exactly what they are: safe spaces for criminals.
Over 98 percent of mass public shootings (all but two!) have occurred in gun-free zones since 1950, and yesterday there was a shooting at a Cincinnati nightclub that could’ve easily met the definition of a “mass public shooting” had it gone as intended. Current reports state that there were a number of shooters involved, but that is to be confirmed as security footage is reviewed. Sixteen were injured and one 27-year old college student was killed.
The following political cartoon can’t help but come to mind immediately:
Tragically, this was hardly the first shooting at this nightclub. According to police, there have been two prior shootings at the club, both in 2015. One was on New Year’s Day when someone was shot in the foot, and the second was in September, when there was a shooting victim found in the parking lot.
If the “gun free zone” sign was an employee, it would’ve been fired long ago for refusing to do its job.
Don’t expect it to start working anytime soon.
