While President Obama was in office, Democrats consistently accused Republicans of being “obstructionists.” Apparently, Democrats thought it was the legislature’s job to appease the president. Never mind that whole “checks and balances” thing, Republicans were supposed to bow down to the dear leader’s commands.
Perhaps nothing personified the narrative more than the budget battles that took place during Obama’s second term. The sides couldn’t reach an agreement on spending cuts, and in 2013 the stalemate caused the temporary shutdown of the federal government. Of course, Democrats threw a fit, taking the obstructionist narrative to new extremes. Even though it takes two to tango, it was Republicans who “shut down the government.”
So now that the shoe is on the other foot, Democrats wouldn’t possibly be thinking about using the same tactics, would they? After all, they wouldn’t want to get labeled obstructionists. Turns out, Democrats have very short memories.
From Fox News:
Democrats said they will block any attempts to include President Trump’s proposed border wall – or other far-right agenda items – in the $1 trillion spending package expected to be announced this week. And, they said, they are not opposed to shutting down the government if Republicans insist on including it.
The warning letter, written by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other top Senate Democrats, was addressed to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. It warned against funding the U.S.-Mexico border wall and other “poison pills” that could be hidden in the budget plan — such as defunding Planned Parenthood, rolling back environmental regulations and allocating additional funding to the Pentagon.
“We believe it would be inappropriate to insist on the inclusion of such funding in a must-pass appropriations bill that is needed for the Republican majority in control of the Congress to avert a government shutdown so early in President Trump’s Administration,”
According to Schumer, if the shutdown does happen it will be the GOP’s fault:
“We hope our Republican colleagues will work with us in a bipartisan way so that the appropriations process meets the needs of the American people,” Schumer said. “If Republicans insist on inserting poison pill riders such as defunding Planned Parenthood, building a border wall, or starting a deportation force, they will be shutting down the government and delivering a severe blow to our economy.”
It’s funny how that works, isn’t it? When Republicans opposed Obama’s budget, they shutdown the government. When Democrats oppose Trump’s budget, Republicans shutdown the government. Talk about hypocrisy.
Needless to say, this is all a bit rich coming from the party that claimed the last shutdown was akin to the apocalypse. Now that the roles have reversed, it’s a “legitimate tactic” to use against your opposition. Of course, no matter what, the Republicans are always to blame.
If the election of Donald Trump has made one thing clear, it’s that Democrats might have the shortest memory of anyone in the country. From Nancy Pelosi changing her tune on signing healthcare legislation without reading it, to Chuck Schumer threatening to shut down the government, Democrats have proven to be nothing but hypocrites.
We’ll remember that.
