In 2009 as his first meeting with Congressional leadership turned somewhat contentious, then-President Barack Obama stared Mitch McConnell and John Boehner squarely in the eyes and tersely stated, “I won, and elections have consequences.” How right you were, Mr. President.
But now eight years and his complete decimation of the Democrat Party later, Obama’s words are ringing to a new tune of truth. Thanks in no small part to Obama’s radically left agenda, there are just 16 Democrat state governors left in America, the fewest since 1860, and 33 Republican. And those Republican governors are getting busy.
We reported on the unraveling of unionized labor at the hands of Republican governors last week, now another (new) Republican governor is tearing down one more pillar of liberal ideology – resistance to the right to keep and bear arms.
Elected last November, at age 42, Republican Chris Sununu is America’s youngest sitting governor. On Wednesday Sununu made New Hampshire, whose state slogan is “Live Free or Die” a “Constitutional Carry” state. It’s now legal to carry a loaded, concealed weapon without a permit in the state of New Hampshire. There are now at least 12 states with the right to carry a concealed weapon without a permit.
The Concord Monitor printed this in its paper and online editions:
“It is common-sense legislation,” he [Sununu] said during a ceremony in Executive Council chambers. “This is about making sure that our laws on our books are keeping people safe while remaining true to the live-free-or-die spirit.”
…Republicans in control of the Legislature have sought to repeal the licensing requirement in recent years, but Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan consistently vetoed the change, saying it threatened to weaken public safety.
…The new law makes the concealed-carry license optional, instead of mandatory. The state is at least the 11th to enact such a policy, according to a spokesman for the National Rifle Association.
New Hampshire is already an open-carry state, meaning anyone who legally owns a gun can carry it exposed without any license or permit.
In the past, gun owners have had to apply for a concealed-carry license with their local police chiefs, who determined whether applicants were “suitable.” The license came up for renewal every four years and was one of the only times gun owners in New Hampshire underwent a review process after initially purchasing a firearm.
…Under the new law, anyone who can legally possess a gun under state and federal law can carry it concealed in a purse, car or briefcase without a license. State statute bars convicted felons or people subject to restraining orders from possessing a gun.”
If you are a burglar, purse-snatcher, child abductor, car-jacker or individual with other such ill-intent – good luck. You have no idea who may be carrying a piece. About 20 more states have proposed full Constitutional carry legislation and with our new plethora of Republican governors and state legislators the chances are very, very good many if not most of them adopt the laws.
Because as a man who cost his party everything once said, “Elections have consequences.”
