Take a poll on what kind of guns Americans think should be banned, and you’ll notice it’s not the most dangerous guns that people want gone. Nope – it’s the guns that look the most “scary.”
More often then not it’s “semi-automatic” (which the layman often believes to mean automatic) “assault weapons” (which are only cosmetically different from regular firearms) involved in mass public shootings (which are the shootings we hear the most about), so it’s no surprise people think they’re responsible for most gun violence. As usual, there’s a massive gap between the public’s perception and reality in this case.
In fact, when it comes to your odds of being killed, you’re more likely to be stabbed than killed by a rifle or a shotgun. As the Daily Caller reported: The FBI’s 2015 Uniform Crime Report found that nearly three times more Americans were killed by knives or other “cutting instruments” than shot and killed by long guns.
According to the report, only 548 people were killed by rifles and shotguns combined in 2015. On the other hand, 1,573 people were “stabbed or hacked to death,” Breitbart reports. In 2015, 252 people were killed with rifles, while 670 were killed by “hands, fists, or feet, etc.”
The number of handgun related deaths (6,483) nearly triple the number of long gun deaths, cutting instrument and bare-fisted deaths combined.
So why aren’t liberals talking about banning handguns? Because they realize their support for “common sense” gun control would drop to zero in that case.
