Here we go again folks. We must report that two more law enforcement officers have been shot in the line of duty, this time in Arkansas in Sebastian County, according to the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office.
5 News Online reports, The suspect has been identified as Billy Jones of Greenwood, Greenwood city leaders confirmed.
Officers said Jones has barricaded himself inside a home on and are trying to negotiate with Jones.
One of the officers who was shot is a Sebastian County deputy and the other is the Hackett chief of police, Darrell Spells, the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office said.
Both officers were taken to Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith. The Sebastian County deputy is in critical condition, said Van Buren Detective Jonathan Wear. Chief Spells is also being treated at the hospital, however his condition is still unknown.
The shooting happened near the intersection of Highway 253 and Boone Road around 7:15 a.m. The call came in as a family disturbance.
The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Smith Police, Greenwood Police and Arkansas State Police are all responding to the shooting.
Officers searched Jones in a wooded, rural area between Greenwood and Hackett, before discovering he was inside the home. Two helicopters were also deployed to search for the suspect, who is still on the loose. Johnson County Emergency Management all terrain vehicles were also brought in.
Sebastian County’s Philip Pevehouse said Jones is not being cooperative and is carrying a semi-automatic weapon.
Most likely this will not end well for the suspect. We pray for the recovery of the two officers.
And moreover, we pray this vicious epidemic of violence against the very people who risk their lives to protect us will end.
