Three years ago a box of letters containing letters written by and about Barack Obama’s father was discovered. A pair of eyes hadn’t been laid on their contents until this Saturday, when the New York Times revealed them to the general public.
While you can read their contents, the Daily Mail reports that Obama will not touch them until he’s stepped out of the Oval Office for the last time.
The letters include almost two dozen written by Obama’s father as well as transcripts from The University of Hawaii and Harvard, and references from friends and professors.
The letters – many typed, some written – show Barack Hussein Obama Sr as a 22-year-old Kenyan clerk frustrated with his lot in life and a craving to broaden his knowledge in the US.
As for a particularly important detail those letters exclude…
But just as telling are the absences. At no point does he mention marrying Durham, nor the birth of Barack Obama Jr on August 4, 1961.
Even in a grant application form written during his time at Harvard in 1963, he leaves a section asking about marital status and number of dependents blank.
The series of letters ends in 1964, the year Obama Sr. left his wife and child for Kenya. According to The Hill, Obama has had a chance to read the letters for himself since they were first discovered.
It’s predictable how conspiracy theorists will interpret those missing details – but it’s not a stretch to theorize that abandonment issues on the president’s part may explain why he’s been so hesitant to read these letters.
It makes you feel a little sorry for him… a little.
