As we shared earlier, anti-Trump protesters at last night’s San Jose, California rally reached new levels of violence. A number of Trump supporters were beaten and their cars vandalized. And in one particularly egregious instance, a white woman was pelted by members of La Raza with eggs and tomatoes (and yet it’s the Republicans who are waging the “war on women.”)
You might expect city leaders to condemn the violence. But, then again, this is left-coast California. As if that weren’t enough, the mayor of San Jose is a Hillary Clinton supporter.
So instead of condemning those perpetrating the violence, why not use this as another opportunity to bash Donald Trump? Because surely the heinous acts of the protesters are his fault.
As Breitbart reports:
San Jose’s mayor, Tom Liccardo, who is a Democrat and a Hillary Clinton supporter, told the Associated Press that Donald Trump was to blame for the violence (emphasis added):
“Our police officers have done an extremely courageous and professional job so far,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told The Associated Press by phone. “We’re all still holding our breath to see the outcome of this dangerous and explosive situation.”
The mayor, a Democrat and Hillary Clinton supporter, criticized Trump for coming to cities and igniting problems that local police departments had to deal with.
“At some point Donald Trump needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behavior of his campaign,” Liccardo said.
Breitbart News was on the scene early, and was threatened by protesters as they destroyed an American flag.
Several journalists and Trump supporters complained that police did little to stop the violence. However, after the first few incidents, they moved protesters a block away in all directions.
Breitbart News witnessed several Trump supporters thanking the police as they left the venue. One shouted: “Police lives matter!” An officer responded: “Thank you.”
Both Hillary Clinton’s campaign and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) condemned the violence against Trump supporters:
Violence against supporters of any candidate has no place in this election.

we cannot stop trump’s violent rhetoric with violence – only peaceful protest in a voting booth can do that. https://t.co/o82lIVNqcB

Isn’t it nice that the Democrat campaigns can come out and condemn the very violence organized by leftist groups out to help get them elected?
Sadly, Mayor Liccardo’s response is more than just liberal lunacy and hypocrisy. It’s an extremely dangerous attack on the foundations of our republic, and specifically our First Amendment. As Ethan Epstein writes for The Weekly Standard:
Thousands of Americans participated in that most benign of civic rituals in San Jose, California, on Thursday night: seeing a presidential candidate speak. Of course, that candidate was Donald Trump, so as these engaged citizens streamed out of the arena, they were subjected to astonishing levels of violence.
The mayor of San Jose, Democrat Sam Liccardo, reacted angrily to the events. Not that he was particularly upset at the violent mob that attacked innocent Americans, of course. No, his ire was directed at Mr. Trump. “At some point Donald Trump needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behavior of his campaign,” the mayor said. Apparently it was downright “irresponsible” of Trump to even set foot in California’s third largest city.
The Washington Post characterized the mayor’s remarks as if they were just standard partisan hackery: It noted that the mayor is a “Hillary Clinton supporter.” But Liccardo’s remarks were far different than, say, a cable TV flack claiming that Trump’s tax policy “favors the rich.” (And by the way, he employed the same logic as as a slack-jawed misogynist saying of a sexual assault victim, “hey, her skirt was so short, she was asking for it.”)
Mayor Liccardo justified committing violence against people with whom he disagrees politically. That’s an attack on the very foundation of our system of government and the First Amendment, and a very dangerous one.
Indeed. And these sometimes insidious, sometimes blatant, attacks on the “wrong” political discourse — that doesn’t support the progressive agenda — are becoming more and more prevalent in Obama’s America. And it’s especially difficult to fight when most of the mainstream media is on board with that very agenda.
Which is why it’s incumbent upon all of us to do everything we can to call this out when it happens and defend our precious God-given rights.
