My colleague Michele Hickford once joked regarding the transgender bathroom controversies “If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, but pees like a dog, is it still a duck?”
With Phil Robertson of “Duck Dynasty” fame commenting publicly on the same topic, I thought the question was worth pondering again. According to the Independent Journal:
“Duck Dynasty” Patriarch Phil Robertson has weighed in on the North Carolina “bathroom law” controversy with a “radical idea” of his own.
In an email to conservatives, he wrote:
“This is Phil Robertson from Duck Commander and I’ve got a radical idea. Men should use the men’s bathroom and women should use the women’s bathroom.
Just because a man may ‘feel’ like a woman doesn’t mean he should be able to share a bathroom with my daughter, or yours. That used to be called common sense. Now it’s called bigoted.”
Personally, I think the easiest solution for most businesses would simply be to have a gender-neutral bathroom in addition to the traditional male/female bathrooms. Many businesses already have these in one form or another, whether or not they’re explicitly stated that they’re “Gender Neutral Restrooms,” or other kinds that could double over as one (such as a family restroom).
What do you guys think? This seems like an easily solvable issue that shouldn’t warrant as much controversy as it’s received.
