It seems Iraq is on fire once again. At least 32 people are dead and 75 wounded after twin car bomb attacks today. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility.
Meanwhile, in Turkey today, a suicide blast that killed two policemen and injured more than 20 — including civilians — is being linked to ISIS as well.
Two suicide car bombs claimed by Islamic State killed at least 32 people and wounded 75 others in the center of the southern Iraqi city of Samawa on Sunday, police and medics said.
The first blast was near a local government building and the second one about 60 meters (65 yards) away at a bus station, police sources said. The death toll was expected to keep rising.
Unverified online photographs showed a large plume of smoke rising above the buildings as well as burnt out cars and bodies on the ground at the site of one of the blasts, including several children. Police and firefighters carried victims on stretchers and in their arms.
Islamic State said it had attacked a gathering of special forces in Samawa, 230 km (140 miles) south of the capital, with one car bomb and then blew up the second when security forces responded to the site.
Islamic State holds positions mostly in Sunni areas of the country’s north and west, far from the mainly Shi’ite southern provinces where Samawa is located. Such attacks are relatively rare.
This comes on the heels yesterday’s attack that killed at least 21 and wounded at least 42.
Sadly, many Americans have acknowledged they find it difficult to care about places like Iraq, where it seems this type of tragedy is a regular occurrence. However, as Fox reports, the country has been mired in a political crisis for months, hindering the government’s ability to combat the Islamic State group — which still controls large areas of the country’s north and west — or address a financial crisis largely prompted by the plunge in global oil prices.
Anyone who thinks these distractions and deterrents from combatting ISIS — such as what’s going on in Iraq currently — don’t affect all of us may have become susceptible to President Obama’s own rhetoric assuring us the J.V. team has been “contained.”
Meanwhile, the left is out in full rabid force defending the rights of the LGBT community to use whatever bakers or bathrooms they choose, while this deadly force — that will, by the way, punish homosexuality with corporal punishment or death — continues on its deadly mission. I suppose the left is at least glad to know ISIS is equal opportunity in its intention to kill those who refuse to support its mission for global Islamic dominance.
