Yes, it’s April Fool’s Day and GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz is having some with it by making a YUGE announcement on Twitter this morning.
— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) April 1, 2016
Of course, it’s April Fool’s Day, so Cruz’s tweet is — at least, as of yet — just a joke.
Click on the link in Cruz’s tweet to see the video the campaign created. As Politico reports:
Linking to a YouTube video with the title “Donald Trump Accepts Cruz’s Debate Invitation,” the 72-second video begins with a clip of Cruz challenging Trump to a one-on-one debate. What follows are two clips of Trump, one of him talking to the press aboard his plane boasting that he has won “every single debate,” and the other, a clip taken out of context in which he says, “We’re gonna go on forever with these debates.”
And then, the familiar synth-pop strains of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” appear, making Cruz the first presidential candidate, current or former, to make an April Fools’ Day joke in 2016.
Well, that’s some first from a presidential candidate, eh?
Personally, I (Michelle Jesse) think it’s refreshing, in the midst of all this campaign vitriol, for a candidate to use playful humor to make his point. Though, to be fair, some might consider the use of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” cruel and unusual punishment.
As y’all know, Cruz has been challenging Trump to a one-on-one debate for some time now, but so far, there are no indications that’s going to happen.
Since we’re on the topic, what do y’all think? Would you like to see a one-on-one debate between these two GOP frontrunners — and the only two remaining who have a path to the nomination, short of a contested convention?
