Well, this certainly has been an interesting few days to be black in Hollywood.
First you find yourself completely shut out of the Academy Awards nominations this year – with your black host, Chris Rock, embroiled in a controversy over whether or not he should even do the honors.
And now this???
BET reports with indignation that “A new biopic on Michael Jackson, focused on his fabled post-9/11 road trip from New York to Los Angeles with Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor, is in the works. Brian Cox and Stockard Channing have been cast as Brando and Taylor, respectively, but the King of Pop will be played by British actor and Ralph Fiennes’ little brother Joseph Fiennes.”
Of course, BET is absolutely aghast that a white actor would be cast to portray the very black Michael Jackson. Except…
Take a look at this photo and tell me what you see?
Sure doesn’t seem inappropriate to have a white person portray Jackson as an adult, but I’m just curious why Hollywood chose a man? I mean to be really politically en pointe, why not even a transgender actress?
Of course the liberal Twittersphere went crazy with the news.
BET helpfully inserted a video of Michael Jackson presenting an award to James Brown, but frankly I can’t see how this helps the case.
It always seemed to me like Michael Jackson would have wanted either Diana Ross or Peter Pan to play him in real life anyway…But what do I know?
