Senator Ted Cruz caused liberal heads to explode from coast-to-coast yesterday when he made the claim during an interview with Hugh Hewitt that the majority of violent felons are Democrats.
As ABC reports, “In the wake of Friday’s deadly shooting at a Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado,Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz claimed the “overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats” and that the Democrats and media are politicizing the shooting.
The Texas lawmaker was asked about the shooting, which left three dead, during a radio interview with Hugh Hewitt Monday.
During the interview, Cruz said he believes Democrats are soft on crime because “an overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.”
“Now listen, here’s the simple and undeniable fact. The overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats. The media doesn’t report that. What they report, and there’s a reason why the Democrats for years have been viewed as soft on crime, because they go in and they appoint to the bench judges who release violent criminals,” Cruz added.
“They go in and fight to give the right to vote to convicted felons. Why? Because the Democrats know convicted felons tend to vote Democrat.”
Naturally, righteous indignation was instantly ignited in the mainstream media. THIS. CANNOT. BE. TRUE. After all, liberals know for a fact that gun-toting conservative Republicans are the violent crazies shooting up shopping malls, movie theaters and churches with all too frequent abandon – never mind that the facts don’t support that either, but never let the facts get in the way of a good narrative.
Nonetheless, liberal fact checkers went into overdrive to point out how Cruz had GROSSLY mischaracterized the facts.
USA Today reports, “Sen. Ted Cruz misrepresented an academic study when he claimed that the “overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.”
The claim is based on research that found a majority of ex-felons in three states registered as Democrats. But that was a study of all ex-felons, not just violent criminals, as Cruz framed it.”
OH! So a majority of ALL ex-felons are registered as Democrats – not just the violent ones. So that’s makes it much more palatable. Of course Cruz did say in an interview with ABC that he was using “reasonable inference” for his claim about violent criminals.
“Also, a follow-up study of three additional states by the same authors found the majority of ex-felons in those states were neither Republican nor Democrat.
Another study estimated ex-felons are more likely to vote Democratic than Republican, but the authors caution that that doesn’t mean criminality is associated with partisanship. Rather, it is a reflection that those in the criminal justice system are more likely to be black, Latino or poor whites.”
But…wait? Isn’t that terribly racist? To say criminality is more likely to be associated with race? Can you imagine the firestorm Cruz would have ignited had he said criminals are more likely to be black or Latino? That a far greater percentage of the black or Latino community is going to end up committing crimes?
You know, the left keeps pleading for “an honest discussion about race,” but they can’t even start with the facts. Kind of a non-starter if you ask me.
