Honestly, do you laugh or cry about the story Matthew and Martha Miele’s six-year-old son (whose name is being withheld to protect the innocent). This child, whose crime can best be described as “active imagination,” has been suspended from school in Cinncinnati, Ohio, for pretending to be a super hero and “violently” using an imaginary bow and arrow to save the world. This shocking tale comes from ABC affiliate WCPO News in Cinncinnati who reports,
“A 6-year-old boy is facing a three-day suspension from school because he pretended to shoot an imaginary bow and arrow during recess. The boy’s parents, Matthew and Martha Miele, told WLWT-TV their son was pretending to be a Power Ranger. When a teacher at his school noticed him pretending to shoot a bow and arrow, she took the boy to the principal’s office. The young boy’s parents were then called and told the boy was being suspended for making threatening gestures.
“I have no tolerance for any real, pretend, or imitated violence. The punishment is an out of school suspension,” a letter from the principal read.
“I don’t see anything wrong with the way he was playing,” Matthew Miele told ABC affiliate WCPO-TV. “The punishment is so severe in this it’s hard as a parent to try to make this a teachable moment for our kid so we can move forward in a healthy manner.”
His parents are considering transferring him to another school. They believe it’s healthy for their child to have a strong imagination.
“I can’t stop him from pretending to be a super hero. I can’t stop him from playing Ninja Turtles. I can’t stop him from doing these things and I don’t think it would be healthy to do so,” Martha Miele told WLWT-TV.”
Is this just an isolated case of a school principal using some questionable judgment — maybe trying to stop off some future problems before they begin? Or is it a case of liberal leaning school teachers and school board members developing a zero tolerance for common sense? Frankly, I’m afraid it may be the latter.
After all, two years ago, a 7-year-old boy was suspended for having an imaginary fight with “bad guys.”
Two 6-year-olds were suspended for playing cops and robbers.
A fifth grader was suspended for making imaginary gun and laser sounds in the cafeteria.
In another case, school officials, terrified by the dangerous situation posed by a 10-year-old’s half-eaten pizza (supposedly chewed into the shape of a gun) suspended him from school. This case and another one like it –the disruption and danger caused by a Pop-Tart-chewing 10-year-old who also fashioned his breakfast pastry into an imaginary weapon, actually caused law makers to intervene with so called “Pop-tart” bills aimed at protecting young students from overzealous school boards who seem intent on keeping boys from being boys (and tom-girls from being tom girls?).
Arguably the most ridiculous case of zero tolerance for common sense has to be the one of three Florida boys who were suspended for being involved in “violence” on their school bus. Their reward for jumping on another student, who had pulled a gun, threatening to shoot a victim he was bullying, was school suspension! Yep. According to news reports,“The school justified the suspension, which lasted for the rest of the week, on the ground that the students who prevented a deadly shooting were part of an “incident” involving a weapon. Alberto Rodriquez, speaking on behalf of the Lee County School District, stated that “If there is a potentially dangerous situation, Florida law allows the principal to suspend a student immediately pending hearing.”
The unnamed student’s mother was disgusted with the whole thing. “Those kids had to fight for their lives,” she said. “All the kids that was involved in this, they should have a pat on their backs because they did the right thing to save someone from burying their child.”
Folks, we’ve written before about the unfortunate effects of liberal policies on our young people in school, how we’re creating a nation of wimps who can’t even participate in a game of dodge ball or tag without years of therapy after being tagged out.
But now, they’ve gone to a whole new level. They actually expect students to stand by and do nothing in what may be a life or death situation. While our kids are being punished for doing the right thing by protecting life, our enemies are brainwashing their children to hate, kill, and destroy us on a daily basis.
School boards of America, WAKE UP.
