Uh, do any of you recall President Obama declaring combat operations in Afghanistan over, ended, done, finished? You see, all you have to do if you’re Barack Obama is to command as Ramses II did, “so let it be written, so let it be done.” Well, unfortunately, Obama didn’t deliver his decree, edict or mandate of the cessation of combat operations in Pashtun or Farsi. One way or the other it was lost in translation because the Taliban didn’t get the memo.
As reported by Fox News, “Taliban insurgents launched a massive assault on the northern city of Kunduz Monday, seizing a courthouse, a hospital and other government buildings, and freeing hundreds of inmates from a prison, despite a series of battles with government forces.
Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told The Associated Press that “Kunduz city has collapsed into the hands of the Taliban.” “Security forces in Kunduz were prepared for an attack, but not one of this size, and not one that was coordinated in 10 different locations at the same time,” Sediqqi said. “With capturing of police compound and governor’s office in Kunduz, the whole province fell to our hands,” the Taliban’s spokesman said Monday on his Twitter account. The Taliban used social media to claim the “conquest” of Kunduz and reassure residents that the extremist group — responsible for the vast majority of nearly 5,000 civilian casualties in the first half of this year, according to the United Nations — came in peace.
The fast-moving assault took military and intelligence agencies by surprise as the insurgents descended on the city. It marked the first time the insurgents have seized a major urban area since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001. Within 12 hours of launching the offensive around 3 a.m., the militants had reached the main square, tearing down photographs of President Ashraf Ghani and other leaders and raising the white flag of the Taliban movement, residents reported. Hundreds of Taliban forces also broke into a main Kunduz prison and freed more than 600 prisoners, including 140 Taliban fighters. Many people headed for the airport to flee the city.”
Ladies and gents, Kunduz is not located in southern Afghanistan or even eastern Afghanistan adjacent to the border with Pakistan. I remember being in Afghanistan and the northern portion of the country was rather peaceful. So not only do we have Russia, China, Iran, North Korea and ISIS standing in belligerent defiance, we now have the Taliban right back where they started from. Consider the fact that the Taliban has not controlled a major Afghan city since 2001. Now, folks, you know somehow this is all George W. Bush’s fault and that’s going to be the progressive socialist talking point.
How did we get to this point? As I wrote yesterday, President Obama has a penchant for avoiding confrontation and a lack of desire to respond to violence with escalation. Then again, as he said in his second Pentagon press conference “bullets have never won a war of ideology” — chalk that one up as another false narrative.
Nazism, Fascism, Japanese imperialism and Communism were met on battlefields — and crushed. Islamic jihadism and Islamism are not even being defined — heck, barely mentioned, because as Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson stated at the Aspen Institute, using the word Islamic with extremism and jihadism is offensive to Muslims. I think it’s more offensive that the Taliban has taken Kunduz and ISIS is beheading, crucifying and executing Assyrians, Chaldeans, Yazidis, Muslims, and anyone not converting or subjugating to their Islamic violence.
“Gen. Murad Ali Murad, the deputy chief of army staff, said Monday’s attack involved a large number of Taliban drawn from across the north and included foreign fighters, likely Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan members with an eye on the Central Asian states to Afghanistan’s north. “Strategic areas, including the airport, are controlled by Afghan security forces,” he said. “Reinforcements have already arrived and attacks on the insurgent positions will be launched soon,” he added, without elaborating.
The fall of the city, which has a population in excess of 300,000, marks a major setback for Afghan government forces, who have struggled to combat the Taliban with limited aid from the U.S. and NATO, which shifted to a training and support role at the end of last year.”
We shifted to that role to accommodate what President Obama wanted, which had nothing to do with the reality on the ground. It’s part and parcel of the same delusion which has CENTCOM intelligence analysts reporting that their intel assessments are being “doctored.” Makes you wonder, since Afghanistan is in the CENTCOM AOR (Central Command Area of Responsibility), did someone sanitize an intel report addressing the resurgence of the Taliban and its consolidation in northern Afghanistan?
Yes, I know, my lovely dear liberal progressive socialist detractors are singing their usual song: West you are a war monger and an alarmist. West, have you not learned, “what difference at this point does it make?”
Well I think we need to remind y’all just who the Taliban are. “The Taliban have a history of brutality toward those they regard as apostates, and have banned girls from school as well as music, movies and other trappings of modern life in areas under their control.”
These are the fellas who shot young Malala Yousafzai in the head just because she spoke out for education of young girls. Now, you’d think the “war on women” advocates would be screaming to President Obama. And the Code Pink gang would see this as a threat — nah, just avoid confrontation and “empathize with the enemy” in order to understand their grievances. Here is their grievance folks: they are commanded by their man Mohammad by way of Allah to intimidate, instill fear, and kill. And sadly, the leadership of the United States is so weak, all the enemies are running rampant and the world has been left in a vacuum which a despot, dictator, theocrat or autocrat will eventually fill. Nature does indeed abhor a vacuum.
Fourteen years after America deployed Special Forces to fight alongside the Northern Alliance and destroy a 60,000-man Taliban Army, we are gone and the Taliban are back taking Afghan cities.
I have a term for this: SNAFU! And the biggest contributor was the reelection of the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania and his failed national security and foreign policy of appeasement, acquiescence, weakness and avoidance.
