A liberal legislator actually admits gun laws have done little to prevent gun violence. Nope, that’s not a misprint! Now, maybe you’re thinking “thank God, they’re finally getting it.” But… you can forget that.
Senator Tom Kaine (D-VA), had the right idea but then took the typical wrong liberal action after the recent murder of two news reporters in his state. Apparently, Kaine believes that gun retailers and private gun sellers should be clairvoyant — and if they’re not, they should be held responsible for what another individual does with a weapon.
As Breitbart reports, “Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) is pushing legislation to make “gun sellers” criminally liable for the misuse of guns they sell.
The bill is designed to “raise the bar” and require more “accountability” on the part of gun sellers. It also expands the federal net to open the door to criminal liability charges against private sellers too.
According to The Roanoke Times, Kaine’s bill is titled the Responsible Transfer of Firearms Act. It “would make gun sellers criminally liable for a bad sale if they didn’t take reasonable, affirmative steps to determine the customer met federal criteria.”
Currently, the law protects dealers from criminal prosecution unless the dealer “knew or had cause to believe the customer had a criminal record, history of mental institutionalization or other disqualifying factor.”
Kaine makes the case against gun control laws in the very first sentence of the statement accompanying his bill. “The gun laws in our country have done little to stem senseless gun violence.”
As Second Amendment supporters have claimed all along, gun control does not stop criminals or individuals intent on committing criminal acts. Gun control serves to curb the law-abiding citizens from exercising their right to bear arms, which shall not be infringed.
If there’s any doubt about gun laws not working, just look at Chicago. In a city run by Democrats that enacted the toughest gun control laws in the nation, gun violence is rampant. It’s done nothing stop gun violence – criminals will always find a way around the laws. That’s why they’re called CRIMINALS.
Gun sellers now conduct federal background checks on customers at the time of purchase. Yet, Kaine wants to hold the gun seller accountable for the actions of the buyer even after the FBI cleared the individual for the purchase.
If we take this thinking to its next logical step – well, logic and liberal never go together — we could expect the federal government to prosecute car dealers for drunk driving cases. Hmm, now here’s an interesting thought. I wonder why the feds don’t demand car dealers run traffic background inquiries to find out if a purchaser has been arrested for DUI, charged with vehicular homicide, or has more than one speeding ticket?
(According to the MADD website, 10,076 people were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2013 yet I cant find ONE legislator who has authored a bill proposing to hold car sellers responsible for these outrageous and senseless deaths).
Will the Department of Justice arrest the CEO of the Lodge Corporation when an irate woman uses a frying pan to get her husband’s attention? Are the board members of Cuisinart going to be jailed if a Muslim terrorist uses one of the company’s pressure cookers to build a bomb? I’m also wondering if the government officials who presided over one of the dumbest plans on earth, the Fast and Furious gun running operation, should be the first ones to face prosecution because they failed to imagine that the guns they failed to track would end up in the hands of murderous drug cartel members, who then killed innocent Mexicans and Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry? Don’t hold your breath on that one.
I understand Senator Kaine is upset about people who pass background checks and then go on to commit crimes with guns. But demanding more background checks isn’t going to change that. As noted in a previous Breitbart report, Virginia shooter Vester Flanagan legally purchased his gun, which put him in the company of all these other crazed killers who purchased guns legally:
John Russell Houser (Lafayette), Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez (Chattanooga), Dylann Roof (Charleston), Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi (Garland), Jared and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barabara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Paul Ciancia (LAX), Andrew John Engeldinger (Minneapolis), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), Tennis Melvin Maynard (West Virginia), Wade Michael Page (Sikh Temple), James Holmes (Aurora theater), Jared Loughner (Tucson), Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood 2009), Jiverly Wong (Binghamton), Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech), Naveed Haq (Seattle), and Mark Barton (Atlanta).
When will the liberal left figure out that murder is not a legislative problem which can be cured by more legislation?
