It comes and it goes just too fast, and I’m talking about college football season. Here we are at the final weekend — championship weekend.
We’re in the first year of the new College Football Playoff — methinks they need to expand it to eight teams. This weekend will decide the college football’s Final Four and there is plenty of potential for some drama. And if Thursday night’s Central Florida versus East Carolina game is any indicator — we are in for a doozy of a weekend!
In Oklahoma there’s a little game they call “Bedlam” which is all about bragging rights in the state — and recruits. The Sooners started off with so much promise and the Cowboys of OSU looked strong early on in the first game of the season against Florida State but have fallen on tough times — Boomer Sooner.
Let’s start out west in the PAC-12 where Arizona will take on Oregon — whose uniforms are a little painful on the eyes. The Ducks have pretty much had their way this season but there is one team against whom they have struggled the last two years — the Arizona Wildcats. But I don’t know if “Bear Down” can pull this one out – we’ll certainly know by the third quarter.
Up in the Big 10, Wisconsin will face off against Ohio State — who lost another starting QB last week against Michigan. The Buckeyes have an outside chance to make the Final Four and it will take some hefty upsets to make that happen. And even still it may be a long shot — they do have a super bad loss to Virginia Tech. Wisconsin is tough and may just end up playing spoiler for the Buckeyes – a close game, especially with OSU having a new untested QB in the championship game.
Out in the BIG 12 it comes down to two games — Iowa State takes on conference leader Texas Christian who will probably roll. However, my Masters alma mater, Kansas State, travels down to Baylor to take on the Bears — who two years ago spoiled K-State’s undefeated season in Waco. At stake for the Wildcats is a share of the Big 12 title since Baylor beat TCU in a shootout. I am concerned for my purple clad Wildcats — nope not Northwestern — because they didn’t fare well against the high powered TCU offense on the road in Ft. Worth. But, the ol’ coach, Bill Snyder seems to find a way. Go Cats!
Well, heading back across the Mississippi River to the ACC championship game which, pits a solid Georgia Tech — triple option — against a struggling Florida State, who always seems to find a way to win. Florida State has just kept winning and they are the reigning national champions — but get no respect, kinda like Rodney Dangerfield. The Seminoles did not look impressive against the Florida Gators last week — expect a close game and being from Atlanta, I just gotta go with the Yellow Jackets where I sold Cokes and was an usher as a Boy Scout.
And last but certainly not least — yeah, I know and I can hear y’all, Roll Tide Roll — ain’t liking you guys as long as Lane Kiffin is there. Bama faces off against Mizzou in my hometown of Atlanta in the venerable SEC Championship game.
Last year it was Missouri facing off against another team from the State of Alabama — Auburn. You just don’t know which Mizzou team will show up but somehow they win. Watching Bama put up a double 5 on Auburn last week in the Iron Bowl was amazing, they are loaded with weapons — it will be a test for the Mizzou defense. I don’t know if Tigers can go the distance — so advantage to the Crimson Tide.
So enjoy this final weekend of college football — oops, that’s not entirely true. Next week is America’s game: Army vs Navy. It’s a game like no other, because the fellas on that field are already champions.
