Atheists use children to bash Christmas in billboard campaign

Well, it’s Christmas season and here we go again. I truly believe in freedom of speech and I do not try to define what that freedom is (unlike those who define free speech as only speech they agree with).

However, it’s just perplexing to me that atheists go to such lengths to attack something they don’t believe exists. If there is no God, why are you trying so hard to erase Him? Just like my head-scratching over the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which continues to profess being “offended” by something they say doesn’t exist — but hey, we have our freedoms, right?

I also thought there was another First Amendment right of freedom of religion and its free exercise — as well as the right to petition your government for redress of grievances. But that doesn’t mean you have the right to burn down businesses to express your grievance. But I digress.

Back to Christmas, and the annual assault.

As reported by 5newsonline, a national atheist organization has put up a billboard in Springdale, Arkansas depicting a little girl writing to Santa saying she wants to skip church on Christmas because she’s too old for fairy tales (but not too old to believe in Santa, apparently).

According to 5newsonline, “the billboard is part of a “firebrand-style” campaign launched in multiple Bible Belt cities including Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis and Fort Smith, according to a post on the American Atheists website. The group also plans to put up a billboard in Milwaukee. Danielle Muscato, public relations director for American Atheists, told 5NEWS the billboards are aimed at in-the-closet atheists who are pressured to observe religious traditions during the holidays. He said the billboards are to let them know it is OK to doubt the way they were raised and think for themselves.”

I don’t think anyone is out there pressuring anybody to observe religious traditions — perhaps this is just a ploy by someone who doesn’t want to give any Christmas gifts? But seriously, this group wants to put up billboards as some kind of public therapy session?

Hey, no big deal, they have the money so let them put up their advertisements. However, why use the image of a little child? Why are adults spoiling Christmas for kids? I remember writing my letter to Santa and I was always excited about it. And why place these in “Bible Belt” cities — seems this group is purposefully targeting — that gets you a penalty flag in football.

Well, the Christmas billboard wars have begun. According to 5newsonline, leaders of Grace Church in Alma said they plan on putting up a billboard near the atheist advertisement, saying, “Questions, Doubts and Curiosity…All Welcome At Grace Church.” Muscato said he welcomes the church’s billboard, saying he advocates people being able to think for themselves on whether to believe in any, or no, religion.”

Except the billboard is not just about people — it specifically displays the image of a little girl, with a letter to Santa.

“Even children know churches spew absurdity, which is why they don’t want to attend services. Enjoy the time with your family and friends instead,” said American Atheists President David Silverman. “Today’s adults have no obligation to pretend to believe the lies their parents believed. It’s OK to admit that your parents were wrong about God, and it’s definitely OK to tell your children the truth.”

“The group was unsuccessful in one Bible Belt city, though. American Atheists was unable to get their billboard put up in Jackson, Miss. due to push back against the billboard’s content from local residents, according to the post. “Area lessors rejected the design due to content,” the post states. Muscato said in the website post, “The fact that billboard companies would turn away business because they are so concerned about the reaction by the community to a simple message that not everyone goes to church and not everyone believes in gods shows just how much education and activism on behalf of atheists is needed in the South.”

I guess Mr. Muscato seems to believe that we Southerners are just some backwards stupid folks — clinging to our guns and religion.” Well sir, we kinda like church and I just gotta tell ya, I grew up down south and never thought churches spew absurdity. At my church today there are plenty of kids who seem to have lots of fun attending.

We all remember the first prayer we learned as children, “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray to the Lord my soul to keep, If I should die before I wake, I pray to the Lord my soul to take.”

Now I don’t begrudge Mr. Muscato his opinion one bit. But I just cannot seem to understand why he would condone using the image of a child purposefully in this ad campaign? You can bet the next step may be to file a lawsuit against the billboard company in Jackson, Miss. that refused the ad.

This story makes me particularly happy to be flying to Carlsbad, New Mexico today for the Eddy County Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on Thursday morning.

I met Mayor Dale Janway of Carlsbad back in May as we rode through his town during the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America. The good mayor and I have maintained contact, and it was an honor to have him ask me to come and deliver the address for his prayer breakfast — hope y’all can come out. And afterwards I get to visit the Carlsbad caverns!

I just pray there never comes a day in America when such an event will not be permitted. I pray that is not the objective of Mr. Muscato, because just as I respect and honor his freedom of speech – despite the confusing intent — I pray he respects my freedom of religion and the free exercise thereof.

Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas to everyone. After all, even Scrooge had a change of heart.

Umm, pst, atheists, Christmas is a religious holiday, going to church is what the holiday is about…If you don’t believe in God then why are you celebrating His holidays? I hope your families respect your “intellect” in not believing in “fairy tales” and decide to not give you gifts this year. You know, to honor your decisions.

We did that with a relative who announced that he didn’t believe in God, and repeatedly made smug pronouncements about how stupid Christians are, believing in a fairy tale. When Christmas came around, everyone got gifts and a stocking by the fire except him. Believe me, his nose was way out of joint about that! When he asked why, my husband said, “You can’t spend all year denouncing our beliefs and then expect we would include you in a celebration of those beliefs.”

Isn’t it just a little bit ironic that the child in question who’s too old for fairy tales is perfectly OK with writing a letter to Santa?

But yet Atheists will believe in UFO’s, alien life and black holes, all of which have never been seen or touched and are only “theory”.

What is wrong with you? People accept scientific theory as a viable possibility, not as fact. I believe black holes have been seen by the Hubble telescope.

And Joan, why do you think atheists condemn God? They just don’t believe in the supernatural as fact.

Rena

There isn’t anything wrong with me. And there isn’t anything wrong with those possibilities, what I am saying is, many atheists take what science has to say as, pardon my use of this word, “Gospel” and there is no disputing what science has to say. Its ironic as even many top astrologers, physicists, etc are now saying that “no one has actually seen a black hole”, so the possibility is that they do not exist as well. The point here is, they would take the word of a man, who has never seen a black holes, nor ever seen an… Read more »

First of all, do a search for “hubble pictures of black hole”
and you will see pictures of them.
It is possible that some atheists believe theories to be fact and maybe even some scientists do – I don’t know. Most scientists use the correct terminology – calling facts facts and theories theories. But all religious people believe that God is a fact when it has never been proven. So, if you have the capacity for logic then what you stated was backwards.

Jay7027

Don’t forget evolution. That is still only theory. It’s not science fact. And this BS that nothing else has come along so it has to be a fact by now is utter nonsense. I believe science can be a useful tool. But it is being abused today. It was NEVER meant to disput faith. They are two very different yet equally important things.

Are they so insecure in themselves that they have to bash someone else’s beliefs and do it through a child? There are many religions out there and one would never think to attack another religion. But these atheists feel the need to condemn God. Perhaps it is out of fear.

By deffinition they aren’t for anything. Their whole belief is a negative because it is against something. So they can’t be positive. Just like calling themselves moral is a joke. What moral code could they possibly follow that doesn’t stem from the Ten Commandments. And to apply even ONE of the commandments to their lives is to follow religious teaching therefore they are NOT truely atheists. They are faux atheists. Cherry picking what they want from faith but throwing out the rules they don’t like. Aka spoiled brats.

Religion is just a theory and usually has some interesting stories and has value as entertainment. The problem is with people that believe the stories as if they were facts. LOL – nice advertisement.
What a BS story.

I see why you put it here. Maybe people with blind faith that have a problem that was not answered by their prayers (praying is silly begging) then here is an alternative. As a non believer in any ot that nonsense, I have too much compassion for my fellow man to use religion to take their money – I would have been a multimillionaire otherwise. I suppose you are looking for suckers – should be easy prey here.

If you want to know Jesus is the real deal, look at how much pains Atheists go through to erode religious freedom and to discard the religious Background of countries like America.

It’s because they’re cowards. Christians are an easy target.

I used to live in Dearborn Michigan and there were billboards from atheist groups in both Arabic and English that specifically targeted Muslims.

They are targeting G-d in every religion.

I was all for Allen West for president. Now he has moved down a notch on the intelligence scale in my book. I know many people that were brain washed as kids and they admit the religious stuff messed them up. it is a life long dysfunction to deal with – the reason why so many still believe in the fairy tale. The evidence is in his own writing – “now I lay me down to sleep” – this is truly using a child’s vulnerability to suggestion to begin them believing in a God using fear tactics! The message ”… Read more »

What I don’t understand about atheists is since you hate God so much or you don’t believe in Him why even bother!! You know what I don’t believe that atheists hate God I think something really bad happened in their youth and they blame God for it. If you believe that something does not exist why the hell are you fighting it so much? What, to make you look smart? Trust me you look more ignorant “Ignorance can be fixed – stupid is forever”

betterboy

Ignorance is a lack of knowledge – stupid is a lack of brain power. It would be beneficial to society to help Jesus addicts recognize their addiction. You are so invested in keeping the fantasy alive and the high going that you make things up – like atheists hate God. I’ve never heard anyone say, “I hate you God!”. It makes no sense for an atheist to hate what they don’t believe exists – except maybe to a blind faith addict. Non believers don’t fight religion, we fight those that believe in fairy tales as fact because large groups affect… Read more »

You sound like you are Avery angry person that has been mad at God for along time.Hate will eat you like a cancer, and well, believing that we came from monkey’s ,now THAT is a fairy tale

You are making assumptions. It does not surprise me because you can believe in something with no facts or evidence. there might be a God of some sort – no one knows, but one thing I am sure about is that there is no God as any religion teaches and anyone that believes it is willing to believe anything to avoid self responsibility and the fear of death. I don’t hate anyone, I’m not angry, and only those that believe in Jesus might be mad at God for not giving them stuff. That certainly is not me. I am just… Read more »

At least the christian faith teaches us that we were created in the image of our maker. We have a father God who loved us enough to send his own son to be a savior for a creation that doesn’t appreciate what sacrifice was made for them. But if you atheist feel better about your exitance coming from amonkey that’s fine too. But I believe it takes more faith to believe we come from monkey’s and not from a Heavenly God

betterboy

You should question what you’ve been taught when it makes no sense. If you are the image of your maker then is God, ugly, tall, a midget, black, yellow, a quadraplegic, blond, brown? Man or woman? What image is it? You really think God looks like people? Makes no sense. I think some people are dumb enough that they did come from monkeys, but science collects facts and gives theories based on facts. The old theory was that man evolved from monkeys. The new theory is that man evolved along with monkeys, but that monkeys evolved less. As more facts emerge… Read more »

‘Only a fool says in his heart that there is no God.’ I’m sure He already knows why you’re a fool, but you will have the opportunity to tell Him yourself when you stand before Him on Judgement Day. I’ll pray that you wake up before then.

Your statement – “‘Only a fool says in his heart that there is no God.’ – is in every religion and is there for a reason. It is very manipulating. No one wants to be a fool, so “only a fool would not believe”. To non-believers, only a fool would believe in something that has no evidence. Just as you most likely don’t believe there will be 72 virgins waiting for Muslims, I have absolutely no reason to believe there would be a judgement day because it makes no sense. Assuming God was real as religion teaches, why would he… Read more »

The truth will remain true even when you don’t believe it, and a lie will still be a lie even if you do believe it. 16″For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name… Read more »

I agree with you – the truth and reality will be the same no matter what anyone believes. What is important about that is a suicide bomber believes in some non-reality and kills people because of it – so there are consequences. So, when people believe in a false God or teachings there can be fallout from that that affect others – the only reason I care about people that believe in fairy tales as if they were fact. LIke the 72 virgins of Allah. That can’t be true, but attaining that gives inspiration to the crazies to follow a… Read more »

“in the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 He also created everything that is on the earth and that includes you, me, and everyone else. “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. It was a story book created by man to explain the unexplainable by ignorant people. Sin is a shaming and blaming thing and is a horrible way to treat people. The bible is like a stack of bricks. If the one on the bottom is faulty then the entire stack will fall. Just find one lie in the bible then the rest is nonsense. There are more falsehoods in the bible than came out of Obama’s mouth. Life started about 5000 years ago? Tons of actual evidence to prove that wrong, so the entire bible is false. Don’t know how… Read more »

In the beginning of the article from your link it states what bible the info is based upon. I have a problem with that because it infers that there are more than 1 interpretation of the bible and various bibles exist. If all bibles don’t state the same thing then how can any of them be trusted. I found a statement in the article that I believe – “The world says that Christianity is a belief system for the simple-minded bent on following an unknown Nazarene from long ago.” This is a fraud. The statements this guy makes to explain… Read more »

If quotes from the Bible do not convince you of the accuracy of the claims of the Bible, then clearly you are unreasonable and unwilling to even consider the possibility of error.

betterboy

Are you serious? Using quotes from the bible to justify claims in the bible is like Obama telling you that he can be trusted when he says if you want to keep your plan you can keep it. You must go outside the bible and seek facts to prove or disprove what the bible states. There is evidence all over the world of man’s existence long before the bible says God created man, so the bible is wrong right in the beginning, but that is no surprise because the men that wrote the bible did not have the technology to… Read more »

I feel very bad for atheists. It really must be a very sad time of year for them. When families come together to share in a time that brings joy and happiness to a lot of families. You get to sit around a table with either a turkey or ham, all the trimmings, if you have a fire place you light up that fire – get some hot coca with a little Bailey’s Irish Creme (even letting your kid take a sip, watch that nose wrinkle up, so sweet) and laugh. Then you get all the little kids together, including… Read more »

Who says an atheist can’t celebrate Christmas? Is it because it “supposedly” revolves around Christianity. Christmas was originally a pagan holiday about the winter solstice and still had gift giving evolved, but then Christians took the holiday and made it into their own to try make pagans convert. There is still the spirit by being around your loved ones and not being selfish by giving to others. Yet, I guess only Christians can celebrate a holiday that wasn’t originally theirs when they stole it from others, I guess they don’t follow their own commandments.

If you have to ask a question like that then no matter how I respond you just won’t get it. So, leave it be – I have no respect for atheists and their phony celebrations – hypocrites

What a strange idea you have of what atheists are like at Xmas. Family getting together has nothing to do with celebrating Christ; eating a turkey or ham dinner or drinking a glass of baileys has nothing to do with celebrating Christ. Waiting for a guy to fly from the North Pole and drop presents under a pagan tree is certainly not celebrating Christ. In fact nothing you mentioned spoke about you remembering or praising the person behind the supposed reason for the season. That makes you more of a hypocrit than the atheist that says they celebrate the solstice,… Read more »

Again, another person who doesn’t get it. It has nothing what so ever to do with Santa and presents. It is the celebration of Jesus, even though their is proof that Jesus was born more around September or October. @disqus_Hw5O5WTv8u:disqus says the same thing you did and neither of you understand anything I said. Even though I said we sit and drink a little bailey’s you don’t know what my family discuss on that day. AND yes snake old man Christmas is a pagan holiday, we know how it started and regardless of that we love it still. To use… Read more »

You say celebration of Jesus but again I say you mentioned nothing in the description of your holiday celebrations that has anything purely to do with Jesus, so why on earth do you think atheists don’t have joy during the holidays? Talking of people not getting it. You don’t think they visit family? Have meals together? Bizarre.
And if it’s nothing to do with Santa why spend so long waxing lyrical about him?

As I read your post, I’m in amazement of you being in la la land. I and others do understand everything about what you are stating and feeling. You are addicted to Jesus like a heroin addict – being high on the idea that you will live for eternity bathing in the sunlight of the lord and avoid hell. You, like other addicts, are so needy of the high that you abandon the obvious, logic, and facts because any of those would be a buzz kill. You have been brain washed by other religious addicts into thinking that only Jesus… Read more »

To me Christmas is just traditional. It is a fun time of the year especially when your a child. I am an atheist or agnostic and the traditional view of Christmas such as Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, baby Jesus, the virgin birth, or etc. does not bother me. I remember being a child excited to open up my own presents and it is really cool to watch children open up their presents and see the happiness in their faces. I just don’t like when religious people telling me if I don’t believe what they… Read more »
