Needless to say, there’s so much going on in the world it becomes difficult to remain focused on current news items. However, It is imperative to sometimes search out news from outside sources that are far more honest than many of our American media outlets.
For example, little is being reported of the Muslim Brotherhood strikes against the Egyptian government — however, next door in Libya there are some other interesting developments — although some may say, “What difference at this point does it make?” I truly find it unconscionable that abandoning Americans to die and then promulgating a lie to cover it up can be so dismissed and deemed acceptable behavior.
But, as reported by the Daily Star from Lebanon, “With Libya engulfed in chaos, the town of Derna in the east of the largely lawless country is emerging as a new stronghold for ISIS, experts say. The North African state has been wracked by instability since the overthrow of autocratic leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, providing a fertile ground for Islamic extremists.”
“ISIS fighters have already swept across Iraq and Syria, and their leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi recently boasted of vows of allegiance from militants in Libya, Egypt, Algeria, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Some Western observers consider Derna, a town of 150,000, to be the home of a third ISIS franchise in North Africa, after Jund al-Khalifa in Algeria and Egypt’s Ansar Beit al-Maqdis declared their support earlier this year. “The Islamic State is in Derna. It’s well documented. There’s no doubt,” said Othman Ben Sassi, a former member of the now-disbanded Transitional National Council, the political arm of the rebellion that overthrew Gadhafi.”
In case y’all need a reminder, it was the Obama administration which violated the War Powers Act to supply American combat resources to Islamic jihadist groups who then overthrew Moammar Gadhafi. It was done under the guise of some imminent “humanitarian crisis” — funny, I thought there was a greater crisis in Syria – but then again, “What difference at this point does it make?”
Here is the difference. Our own media doesn’t have the stomach to investigate or report the truth. What was the reason the United States sided with Islamists in Libya — i.e. the Obama administration? What was the reason President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton outsourced the security of our Consulate/Special Mission Compound to a known Islamist group — the February 17 Martyrs Brigade? Why was there a CIA annex operating in Benghazi? What has happened to the weapons supplied to these Islamist groups that we now know are affiliated with al-Qaida — such as Ansar al Sharia, responsible for the September 11, 2012 attack? And what is the status of the sole fella who is seemingly responsible for all that occurred in Benghazi? Maybe he’s in the same place as Army SGT Bowe Bergdahl?
But consider the failure of the venture into Libya — which cannot even be called foreign policy — rather foreign folly. We evacuated our full embassy in Libya earlier this year – remember the jihadists doing swan dives into the embassy compound pool? The country has been totally destabilized as there was no follow-on plan for governance and a vacuum was left — similar to Iraq. And who has emerged as well in Libya now to fill that gap? Yes, ISIS — we already had a problem with AQIM (al-Qaida in the Maghreb). And we also reported about Egypt and the UAE conducting strikes into Libya against Islamist forces.
Islamists are filling the gaps all over the Middle East. According to the Daily Star, Mr. Ben Sassi says “the jihadi group is exploiting “the absence of state authority and porous borders.” Statements and images have for several weeks circulated on extremist forums claiming to depict gatherings of “Libyan jihadis” belonging to the group – prompting concern in Washington. “We have seen reports that violent extremists — read Islamic terrorists — [in Libya] have pledged allegiance to ISIS and are looking to associate themselves with it,” State Department spokesman Jeffrey Rathke said.”
Maybe this is yet another reason why U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel was sacked by President Obama — after all Hagel did describe ISIS as the greatest threat in the Middle East — as opposed to Obama calling them a “jayvee team.” Jayvee teams don’t have other Islamic terrorist groups pledging allegiance to them. All across the region we see the rise of Islamism and jihadism — but work permits and deferring deportations for illegal immigrants are far more pressing.
There can be no debate that from a foreign policy and national security perspective, America is at a very dangerous place. As we play social egalitarian games with our military and draw down our combat capability and capacity, the enemy is coalescing. Even without attending intelligence briefings it is apparent.
The Daily Star writes, “Derna and large areas of Benghazi, Libya’s second city, have served as strongholds for radical groups including Ansar al-Shariah, classed by the U.N. as a terrorist organization. In April, an offshoot of the group announced it had implemented Islamic Shariah law in Derna. The self-proclaimed “Shura Council of Islamic Youth” has reportedly opened Islamic courts and established a religious police force in the town. In August the Shura Council posted a video online appearing to show the public execution in a Derna football stadium of an Egyptian man accused of murder.”
“Several extremists in Derna are attracted to ISIS. But the majority of senior jihadis in Libya are former Al-Qaida members and there is an ideological fight between ISIS and Al-Qaida partisans,” said a Libyan expert on jihadis who did not want to be named.”
The situation in Libya comes from a lack of long-term policy vision. And of course, since we have such a lazy media more focused on Kim Kardashian’s gluteus maximus, the enemy advances.
What difference at this point does it make? It will make lots of difference when the next major terrorist plot is executed in the West because some have looked away and enabled the growth of this Islam-fascist pestilence — and our depleted military will be called upon to take the field of battle against them. Or perhaps not, and we’ll just cower and acquiesce.
