Off-duty US sailors assaulted in Turkey: Liberal thinks they deserved it [VIDEO]

On Tuesday, Veterans Day, on the National Review post-election cruise, I sat on a morning panel with former Assistant Secretary of Defense and Marine combat officer Bing West. One of the questions National Review moderator Jay Nordlinger asked me was, “how do I assess the yellow ribbon military appreciation movement in America?” I responded by saying I applauded individual citizens and certain groups showing their admiration for our men and women in uniform — and recounted my memory of my older brother’s return from Vietnam.

However, what I stressed was that although there may be a groundswell of public appreciation for our troops – policy-wise it is a different story. We are not showing an appreciation for our military when you consider the cuts to its funding affecting its capability and capacity. We are showing blatant disrespect to our veterans who are dying at the hands of an uncaring bureaucracy called the Department of Veterans Affairs.

We are advising our military not to be proud of their uniforms when deployed and even here at home — ordering them not to don their uniforms and we find out that in Turkey, three of our sailors were assaulted by Turkish Nationalist youth — who even attempted to put plastic bags over their heads — while our Commander-in-Chief refers to Turkish leader Recip Tayyip Erdogan as his best friend and ally.

But what I found most appalling — and certainly confirms my response Tuesday — was a recent article written in the far left magazine, Salon. As reported by Breitbart.com, “Radical leftist writer David Masciotra waxes somewhat less than eloquently that Americans who think all soldiers and police are heroes are childish, and betray “a frightening cultural streak of nationalism, chauvinism, authoritarianism and totalitarianism” in a piece published Sunday on Salon.com. But what is childish is Masciotra’s rant; it begins, “Put a man in uniform, preferably a white man, give him a gun, and Americans will worship him.”

I must commend Mr. Masciotra for having the courage to say what his progressive socialist colleagues believe and have always believed — they despise our men and women who take up arms to serve, protect, and defend this nation — foreign and domestic.

The left fails to embrace the qualities and character of those who are more than willing to lay down their lives for others — worse, the left condemns those who shower respect, and yes, accolades upon that small group of sentinels – the guardians.

The leftists of America represent the sheep who find no appreciation for the guard dogs who keep the wolves at bay — as a matter of fact, the sheep tend to believe the mere existence of the guard dogs are an impetus for the wolves to attack. They fail to realize – and certainly won’t admit — that the wolves’ raison d’être is to kill the sheep. The sheep rely on the false premise of “peaceful coexistence” — much to the delight of the wolves.

Masciotra writes, “It is equally challenging for anyone reasonable, and not drowning in the syrup of patriotic sentimentality, to stop saluting, and look at the servicemen of the American military with criticism and skepticism. Physical strength and courage is only useful and laudable when invested in a cause that is noble and moral. The causes of American foreign policy, especially at the present, rarely qualify for either compliment. A more helpful and productive act of citizenship, and sign of solidarity with the military, is the enlistment in an antiwar movement that would prevent the government from using its volunteer Army as a plaything for the financial advancement and political cover of the state-corporate nexus and the military-industrial complex of Dwight Eishenhower’s nightmares.”

You see, in the demented world of the progressive socialist left, Army SGT Bowe Bergdahl is the hero. Bergdahl stood up and refuted America’s involvement in Afghanistan. Bergdahl chided his fellow soldiers and made the “heroic” decision to abandon his post and endanger the lives of those he left behind. This is why Bergdahl’s parents received a Rose Garden ceremony and his whereabouts go unknown, as the investigation into his desertion had found its way to the black hole on Harry Reid’s desk along with 367 pieces of legislation.

In contrast, Marine SGT Andrew Tahmooressi, a two-tour combat veteran was just a dumb Marine who took a wrong turn and got what he deserved — no celebration for his homecoming. There won’t be any Rose Garden ceremony or even a call from the Commander-in-Chief, as Sandra Fluke and Jason Collins received. They are heroes in the bizarro world of the left.

So to Masciotra, the sailors — who were in civilian clothing — deserved to be attacked by the Turkish youth. They certainly do not deserve to be lauded for their commitment of honor and courage — oops, there is an alternate definition of honor and courage for the left.

Those young people from Occupy Wall Street are the real soldiers and heroes. And after all what does Masciotra see as the magic bullet for the morally diseased military? “Americans, especially those who oppose war, should do everything they can to discourage young, poor and working-class men and women from joining the military.”

Yes, the sheep hate the guard dogs who lament when one of their own is lost whilst defending against the wolves — but the sheep don’t give a damn. They just go about eating grass and making the same incessant noise.

Sadly, this is the mentality of the people making national security policy decisions for our Constitutional Republic — and we wonder why President Obama is signing an agreement on climate change while Russia is invading Ukraine.

As Alexander the Great once quipped, “I would not fear an army of lions led by a lamb, but I would fear an army of sheep if led by a lion” — sadly in America it is a case of the former.

But don’t think our everyday law enforcement heroes evade Masciotra’s scrutiny or angst. He writes, “Calling all cops heroes too often leads to pathetic deference to authority, even when the results are fatal, and insisting all members of the military are heroes too often reinforces the American values of militarism and exceptionalism.”

I can only imagine what he thinks of Ferguson, Missouri — and we all need to brace ourselves if the officer there who was attacked by Michael Brown is exonerated by the Grand Jury.

David Masciotra’s article is just another example of why the policies of the left fail, especially when it comes to the preeminent responsibility of our government — protecting the American people, at home and abroad.

It will be up to the American people who love this country and do appreciate its warriors and its guardians to decide Masciotra’s ilk cannot be trusted with the duty of “providing for the common defense.”

Exactly why “moderate” Turkey should never be allowed into the EU and why they should be kicked out of NATO.

Doesn’t Masciotra realize they are doing Obama’s bidding, and he says not to respect them? So which of Obama’s foreign policies is he willing to criticize?

just another leftist journalist who can’t see the forest for the trees,,,,,,if this POS were a captured reporter in the Middle East, he’d be crying for the Military to rescue him!

Another anti-democracy low life that should be shipped out of our country to live in a place where his believes are popular among the main stream population. If he had any guts he would go to the area in Iraq held by ISIS and do some reporting from there. Perhaps in his dying moments he might realize how important it is to have strong military.

Masciotra (like most pointy headed hollow chested liberals) is a babbling moron who has never, I repeat never, put himself at risk for any cause other than his own ego. He desperately needs to have his a*$ kicked – perhaps by a veteran..

Yet another mis-educated sad sack. I’m much more concerned and angry to see our sailors running away. The wussy-in-chief had an enormous impact on how our military members are seen and treated. It’s shameful. Having said that, I’m very happy there was no blood. Masciotra bought the entire screed about the military-industrial complex of America being the biggest evil. Poor sucker

Recommend sailors have some basic self defense skills if they are going to walk the streets of Istanbul and go in a group larger than 3. Either be in a group of 6+ or learn how to render a throat strike that will instantly drop this American hating muslim pig to the pavement.

I don’t condone violence but if you touch me I’m gonna touch you back.

What the hell did they tell these young sailors, we’re stopping here in Disneyland for a few hours, go have a good time? These people hate us.

Seriously wish the scum of the left would move to countries more to their liking, e.g., Cuba, Venezuela or Russia.

They seem to love the lies of Islam as well, perhaps Turkey would suit them as well.

Would it surprise anyone to find out that David Masciotra never mentions this incident at all in his article let alone claims that these sailors deserved to be assaulted?

elle

West didn’t mention it because he talked about these sailors. But if he had I think we can safely assume he would have been tickled pink about the incident.

The title of the article is “Off-duty US sailors assaulted in Turkey: Liberal thinks they deserved it.” Except the liberal in question said nothing of the kind and Allen West can’t even be bothered to link to the actual article, he’d rather link to a Breitbart piece about the article.

West arrived at the same conclusion many did after reading the article, the man obviously hates the military and attempts to hide it behind bitching about how our country is overly patriotic and that we worship heroes, and then he goes on and on into every direction possible with it all. lol. He’s got hero envy because he’s probably never done anything heroic in his life. So the link West gave, right at the top does have a link to the original article, close enough for me. So the headline bothers you because West thinks this liberal thinks the sailors… Read more »

“Assaulted the military with his pen?” Come on now, the only way you can assault someone with a pen is if you’re close enough to stab them with it. Nobody is denying that West should be free to spew as much idiocy as his internet connection can accommodate. But the question is whether it’s honorable to put words in someone elses mouth without even bothering to link to the thing you’re criticizing. He claimed, explicitly, that David Mascriota thought that those sailors deserved to be assaulted. I’m not a lawyer but in the absence of any comments by Mascriota to… Read more »

Yes right in the jugular.

this is the article

Libel would be hard based on the contents of his article where he expressively spits on the military which would provide quite a lot of evidential ammo – sue me lol

honestly it is not hard to speculate how he would feel based on his article, just saying.

It’s never hard to speculate. That’s why you shouldn’t do it. Facts are so much more useful.

David Masciotra sets up a mean strawman doesn’t he? Are all military members heroes? How about this, some of us (many of us) can treat them as heroes, presume them to be heroes until the prove otherwise. I think David Masciotra would have and does have a real cow with that ideal. You know what happened to troops whose specialty was not needed of Iraq? They were retrained as military police / master at arms,a different MOS and sent to Iraq. So instead of being in the rear with the gear, they in many respects were every bit as exposed… Read more »

Well, here is the original Salon piece. http://www.salon.com/2014/11/09/you_dont_protect_my_freedom_our_childish_insistence_on_calling_soldiers_heroes_deadens_real_democracy/

It’s worse than that. What Allen West quotes is in the first paragraph…and Mascriota’s introduction is fulfilled there..

Not at all. However I am surprised West stopped short of making Masciotra an actual member of the mob itself.

Right, so this is a “made-up” story? Even though it’s going around in other news venues? I’m not sure how you manage to breathe and maintain a pulse at the same time, because you sound like a chump and king of the stupid.

David Masciotra wouldn’t know a hero is one came and shat upon his ignorant face.

Crazy, I was thinking almost the same thing – but involving West & an honestly written article.

elle
Guest

Seriously, crazy yes! Wow! No you weren’t thinking that. You are just bouncing off of me. Why not say something for yourself.

Why don’t you just man up and say what you find dishonest about the article in an intelligent way so we can talk about about? Really lay it out my man.

Are you able to do that?

JMHunt
Guest

My bad for not manning up the first time around. On a message board.

Laying it out in an intelligent way, I’d expect the same in return. You up for that? We can just work on the title, which Paul Sheridan already addressed below: that the author of the Salon article never mentioned the Turkey incident nor the soldiers – but of course you already know that because you responded to it…

Message board? That’s sort of yesterday. Let me give you a little hint – always man up in all things in life if you are in fact a man. Paul Sheridan, love him and always enjoy talking to him, in fact he’s one of my favorite people on here for some odd reason lol. I think it’s because he makes me laugh sometimes and I like his cowboy hat LOL. Already commented on that, anyway, enough about him. West didn’t include the link to the article as to the video but rather to the taste of his article in general… Read more »

JMHunt

Lol, thanks for the advicce. If you feel the need to man up for all things in life, including, yes, ‘message boards’ – then have it. A hint of my own: take seriously the things in life that need to be taken seriously. What you would call ‘connecting concepts’ I call ‘stretching it’ – big time. What West does when he starts off this blog is simple – “Off-duty US sailors assaulted in Turkey: Liberal thinks they deserved it” – it’s dishonest. It implies an explicit thought expressed by the Salon author, not an implicit idea West would have you… Read more »

You are simply a contrary, a ricochet unable or unwilling to follow a logical trajectory. Its a good device for engaging people who are passionate about an issue while you are only concerned with proving your superiority. The result is not what you think. I have seen too many like this, it does not work with me.
