Football Saturday – and where I’ll be next week

This weekend of course I’m looking forward to some great college football games after a very intense week. My Tennessee Vols have the weekend off after an incredible OT win on the road at South Carolina. However, there is a REALLY big game for my Kansas State Wildcats who travel down to Ft. Worth to take on Texas Christian — lots of purple in that stadium. K-State is undefeated in the Big 12 and TCU escaped an upset last week at the hands of West Virginia. I gotta go with ol’ Coach Bill Snyder and the KSU Wildcats.

Coming back south, there is another rough one down in Baton Rouge, under the lights, in Death Valley when Bama rolls into town against LSU. Now, the Bengal Tigers pulled the big upset a couple weeks ago against then top five rated Ole Miss — can LSU do it again with a staunch defense? Gonna be a tough one but I remember Bama pulling it out two years ago under the same conditions — Bama survives.

The big game in the Big 10 will be the Buckeyes of Ohio State heading to East Lansing to take on the Spartans of Michigan State. Easy pick for me, go Sparty, as after experiencing the speed of the Oregon Ducks, Michigan State should be able to handle OSU. Plus this could be for the Big 10 to get a college football playoff spot.

Speaking of the Ducks, they head to Salt Lake City to take on the Runnin’ Utes of Utah — have not seen Utah play this year but Oregon is just fast — quack attack rolls.

And it seems to me that Notre Dame was just one pass away from a big upset, on the road, at Florida State — they played surprisingly well. And so I give the Fighting Irish the edge on the road at Tempe, Arizona against Arizona State.

Well, after my fill of Saturday college football on Sunday, my wife Angela and I will board the cruise ship Allure of the Seas. For the second year, I’ve been invited as a guest speaker for the National Review — this time a post-election 2014 summit. I’m looking forward to hearing some very stellar speakers and gain more in-depth knowledge on key issues, as well as moving ahead into the critical year of 2015. I’m really looking forward to meeting former Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Bing West – we’ll speak on a panel together for Veterans Day.

And don’t forget that the 239th birthday of the greatest fighting force the world has ever known, the United States Marine Corps is coming up on Monday 10 November. If you see a Marine that day — or know one — make sure you give them a hearty Semper Fi.

Lastly, on Sunday, it’s the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain — the wall that separated freedom and tyranny. It was President Ronald Reagan who commanded, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” — and it came down. As a young lieutenant back in 1985 I remember the first time I went through Checkpoint Charlie and entered East Berlin. It was at that time I knew what freedom meant — and why I was standing on freedom’s rampart. When the wall came down in 1989 I was a captain and artillery battery commander in the First Infantry Division — the famed “Big Red One” — at Ft. Riley Kansas. It marked an incredible end of an era but we also pondered what would be the ensuing result in the new order without the existence of the Soviet Union — as they retreated from Afghanistan.

Lots happening this weekend but I am honored to have done my small part to strengthen President Reagan’s call to effectively end the Cold War — unfortunately it seems we are reentering it.

Psst..Col West…as for those “stellar speakers”, you’re one of ’em! And the others just might learn a thing or two from YOU.
