Happy Birthday to the Air Force: Cleared hot! [VIDEO]

They began as the U.S. Army Air Corps but today we say happy birthday to the United States Air Force, 67 years of faithful service to our nation from the skies. As a former paratrooper I spent many an hour at Aviano AFB and Pope AFB boarding aircraft for jump missions and deployments. And as an artillery officer and fire support officer in combat, I’ll never forget that simple bzzzz sound of the A-10 “Warthog” Thunderbolt II 40mm Gatlin gun cannon as you can see here – the sweetest sound after giving the order “cleared hot.”

There is no doubt we have the most capable and powerful Air Force in the world — even though we have the smallest and oldest fleet ever in its 67 years. What makes our Air Force exceptional isn’t the aircraft of course, but the Airmen. It is not just the pilots, but the crews, the Air Force Special Operators, the maintenance personnel, the security police and the commitment of these exceptional men and women who uphold the highest standards of honor and integrity.

In 1947 President Truman signed the National Security Act which established this new defense organization, and along with it, the creation of the U.S. Air Force as an independent service, equal to the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. The official birthday of the U.S. Air Force is 18 September, 1947 — today.

Happy Birthday fly boys, and a special happy birthday to the senior officer of our family — Mom’s side — my own cousin Major General Ed Bolton (USAF, Ret).

Off we go into the wild blue yonder,

Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At ’em boys, Give ‘er the gun! (Give ‘er the gun now!)
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one helluva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame. Hey!
Nothing’ll stop the U.S. Air Force!

The A10 cannon is 30mm, not 40mm.

Yes, they are called the 30mm Vulcan shells.

The A-10’s 30mm gun is called the Avenger. The 20mm 6-barrel cannon found in other aircraft is the Vulcan. Are the 30 mm shells called “Vulcan”?

Ahh…my apologies…the 30mm gun is called the GAU-8/A and the Vulcan is 20mm.

No worries, friend.

LtCol West, the A-10 GAU-8 cannon fires 30mm, not 40mm. Happy Birthday, Air Force.

It was only 9 years old, and I was 18, when I enlisted in the WAF on July 22, 1956. I was so proud to wear the uniform. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat if my CIC would still be Ike. We used to sing the AF song with a joke at the end of it – Nothing can stop the US Air Force……..except the weather. Ah, the good old days. Happy Birthday to my “alma mater” – you taught me much.

The air force song has never been for the whole air force or even a majority of its members. We always referred to it as the air force fighter pilot’s song, because the words speak exclusively to that. It means nothing to a guy who is planning the process of deploying 380 short tons of cargo and 400 pax to a theater combatant commander.

That Air Force fighter pilot is not going to be flying very high without the fuel procurement guy doing his job or the ordinance guy making sure those 30mm Vulcan shells are delivered on time. He is every bit as much a part of the crew as the guy on the joystick.

You are absolutely correct, as well as the guy in the chow hall feeding the crew and the gal on the freezing flightline pulling guard duty. My point was, I just wished the song said something about them as well.

“40 MM GATTILING GUN”???????????

DoctorAmmo

Thanks for the kind words, Sir, but just to clarify, the A-10’s GAU-8 is a 30mm Gatling gun. The AC-130 Spectre has a 40mm cannon. Aim High.

There is nothing like an A-10 Warthog on the prowl.

Who provided the weapons to ISIS. Israel. ISIS is attacking Muslims, Christians, Yazdis, but they are not turning their guns towards Israel. No wonder, Israeli Ambassador yesterday has declared Iran 1000 times more dangerous than ISIS. This is hypocrisy. Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer is warning the US today against any cooperation with Iran in the new war against ISIS, insisting “they will never be a partner.” Looking to double down on the hysteria surrounding Iran’s civilian nuclear program, Dermer declared “Iran as a nuclear power is a thousand times more dangerous than ISIS.” Israeli officials have… Read more »

Where are you getting your information from that the IDF is weaponizing the ISIS???? Please tell me its more than “the internet”, if anyhing the UNITED STATES has provided weapons to ISIS, we’ve sent so much weaponry over there thats gone missing or just blatantly stolen and are now being used against our troops! Not to mention the arms we provided afghani’s to fight off the soviet union, all t hat weaponry didn’t just stay in one little cave in Afghanistan….
