NYC: “Stop and Frisk” ends, violent crime soars. Related?

There are those who warned that ending the “stop and frisk” program in New York City would reignite violent crime. Of course, Bill de Blasio, the avowed socialist Mayor of New York City, just blew folks off who made such claims, espousing the typical liberal progressive drivel of social justice.

Well, if this past weekend is any indicator of days of future past, then the ghost of NYC David Dinkins-style will be returning.

As reported by ABC News, “A wave of violence swept New York City over the weekend as at least 20 people were shot, four of them fatally. The shootings, which included the separate woundings of 10- and 12-year-old boys, made for the third weekend in June that at least a dozen people were struck by bullets.”

ABC reports that “this year, 611 people have been shot in the city, compared with 554 for the same period last year.”

And in an effort to put the proverbial lipstick on the pig, “We’ve had an increase, a temporary increase, in shootings,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said. “Crime goes up, it goes down.”

Maybe so, but what effect will a perceived rise in violence and gun crimes have on tourism in the Big Apple?

Is there a causal relationship between ending the “stop and frisk” program and this rise in shootings? Perhaps, but the issue is that perception lends itself to reality and right now Mayor de Blasio is losing that perception and the battle for public opinion.

This is no different than Obama’s retreat from Iraq — and look at what filled that vacuum? Mayor de Blasio created a vacuum on the streets of New York City and now ordinary citizens are being victimized — the folks who don’t attend the swanky progressive socialist cocktail parties and live in well-secured high rises.

It always confounds me how liberal progressives proclaim they are doing something for social justice but don’t have to live under the burdens of their insidious policies.

I have a recommendation for ol’ Bill — head down to the 77th Precinct and walk a beat this weekend. Stop the highbrow socialist politburo mantra of “do as I say, not as I do” and get down there to see what’s happening. Perhaps if a bullet goes whizzing by his head he’ll come to realize why the NYPD needs to be empowered — to serve and protect the people.

And oh by the way, in an unrelated topic, but related to misplaced priorities and benevolence of liberal progressive socialists — I ain’t buyin’ Sandra Fluke’s birth control!

I am with you on almost everything. I am sorry for the up swing but stop and frisk is no good. I don’t care what I have in my pocket. No probable cause of crime and no warrant, get to walkin’ 5-0. (P.s. I’m white so probably would get stopped any way)

I can’t say I ever agreed with a policy like “stop and frisk”… to me, the program itself is an outright violation of the 4th Amendment. The law might have been created with the best intentions (same with gun laws), but it’s very easily abused by LEO.

Crime always escalates in the Summer. Just because we are conservatives doesn’t mean we have to robotically disagree with the opposition on every issue. I think for myself. “Stop & Frisk” is just as much of a Big Government tactic as anything the Dems do. But since it was started by a Republican it must be great. Wrong answer. Who in the hell wants to be subject to a routine frisking (molesting) when they are walking down the street minding their own damn business. Isn’t this the same thing we complain about in airports??? Oh well, as long as they’re… Read more »

100% agree with you! I am astonished that the Colonel would take this position on the “stop and frisk” the way I see it stop n frisk didn’t make much of a difference in the crime rate, it goes up it goes down but if stop n frisk is returned then the constitutional rights of innocents will be stripped. when that happens you have created another crime factor and the gun violence will remain the same.

Only 611 people shot this year? Man the city/state with the nations most strict gun laws is really doing a great job of preventing gun violence! What a joke. When will people realize that criminals dont follow the law? All those laws are doing is ensuring law abiding citizens have a harder time defending themselves. Willing to bet the vast majority of the 611 shootings were committed with illegally held or obtained weapons. Those laws are really slowing the criminals down. Simply ignorance. ….

It helps to understand crime rates versus occurrences of crime: NYC is the largest city in the country, so will likely have the most number of murders. Their crime rate is actually on of the lowest in the country.

James

Yes, and is one of the safest cities in the country, having one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the country. This increase is actually very small considering their population. The goal of “stop and frisk” is to get guns off the street.

I do not, and really don’t want, to understand the kind of thinking that makes “stop and frisk” a greater crime than murder. I can think of several words to describe the kind of person that thinks stricter gun control laws makes people safer. None of them are kind. Fortunately no amount of rhetoric can or will change the Second Amendment.

James

The goal of “stop and frisk” is to get guns off the street. So, this program’s success, if any, would skewer anti-gun control arguments. Mr. West, it helps to understand policing and what is behind this program.

I had planned on a historical tour of NYC. Then I remembered my licenses to carry a concealed fire arm from Pennsylvania and Delaware, aren’t accepted in NYC. With the increase in violence, I guess I’ll watch the travel channel and stay home. It will save me money as well as ensure my safety since NYC doesn’t allow me to defend myself and refuses to take redimentary citizen protection programs.

I am afraid I have to agree. The gov’t has no right to stop and search people just because they are there. NYC is little more than a cess pool anyway. They pass laws that assure that only Criminals will have guns then they wonder that crime runs rampant. They have learned nothing over the decades.

Does it hurt when you try to think? Apparently it does, because you obviously didn’t read the article nor understand it, so I’m guessing it’s because of the pain it causes when you actually have to exercise your brain that stops you from doing so. No where does Col. West say that this is tied to the Obuttmonkey regime, but you had to go there, didn’t you? What he DID say is that perception is reality, and people WILL blame De Blah Blah because of the uptick in violent gun crimes. You, on the other hand, only saw that your… Read more »

Myth; Stop-and-Frisk gets guns off the street and, therefore, prevents murders. FACT: Guns are found in less than 0.2 percent of stops. That is an unbelievably poor yield rate for such an intrusive, wasteful and humiliating police action. Yet, stop-and-frisk has increased more than 600 percent under Bloomberg and Kelly. And the rate of finding guns is worsening as the NYPD stops more innocent people each year. Myth; Stop-and-Frisk is not discriminatory. FACT: Comparing police stops to violent crime suspects is bad math. Only 11 percent of stops in 2011 were based on a description of a violent crime suspect.… Read more »

Fact a majority of violent crimes are committed by both the Latino and Black cultures. So to prevent crime you go to the source. For example, the Israelis purposely focus their attention on Muslims when they come to the airport. Why? Because the bulk of the terrorist attacks are from Muslim extremists. Fact: Most of the serial killers were middle aged white men. So when a serial killer is suspected that is what they tend to look for. It is hard to dispute the facts. But I guess I am racist for saying the truth. You could look up the… Read more »

That he is a Socialist is not in dispute. However, I don’t think he has been in control long enough for credit or blame. I suspect that the reduction in crime is not related to a specific law but perhaps to some other factor. Good police work in general. Its far more complex than allowing unconstitutional searches of citizens. HOWEVER, a good cop can spot suspicious behavior and this can be grounds for at least questioning. So far as restrictive gun laws, in general they only effect the law abiding. Much of the hoopla over gun laws ignores the fact… Read more »

Stop, Question & Frisk is one of the most effective crime prevention tool the police had. DONE CORRECTLY is works very well. The problem is that some cops went directly from Stop to Frisk, and completely bypassed Question. Lazy cops do that. Actually eliminating it was a purely political decision by DeBlasio to pander minority votes. So now we lost that tool and guess what? the guns are out there and since smart cops don’t like to get sued, nobody gets stopped. EVERYBODY who knows ANYTHING about police work to;d them what would happen, and it did! Whay are they… Read more »

The nature of your complaint is what??? I said nothing that isn’t 100% true. Nobody said you have to like it or agree with it. It is what it is. By the way there are a number of warrantless search exceptions to the 4th amendment. Do your homework before you write stupid things.

I know courts have decided that there are exceptions. I’m not a submissive, so I don’t feel the need to defer to people who dress up in robes at work. They’re just people, to me. Their opinions hold no more weight than anyone else’s, it’s just that they have idiots who obey them and are willing to commit disproportionate violence. Sell your religion to someone else.

Thank you. Suspicious activity is a good reason to ask a few questions too. But there is a thin line between this and the totalitarian states “papers please”.
Given the excesses of the Gov’t I tend to go with restrictions on police and pretty strict limits. When Gov’t agencies are listing virtually all military veterans as “terror suspects” along with people with food stored and other perfectly legal activities that are completely innocent we have to be doubly on watch.

I strongly believe that New York’s high crime rates and need to “Stop and Frisk” are tied in with their stringent gun control laws. It’s very difficult for a New Yorker to get a gun to defend himself, no matter how clean his record is. Shucks, a New Yorker was even arrested for using the gun of his bodyguard to defend himself against an intruder! Law-abiding citizens are legally forbidden from getting guns to defend themselves, but criminals don’t care about what’s legal. So criminals have guns, and law-abiding citizens are defenseless! To protect citizens, police have to enforce the… Read more »
