More than 2/3 of America’s youth would fail military eligibility tests

I was Honorably Discharged and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Army 10 years ago. While retirees may be recalled up to active duty within the first five years, to this day, I still train hard and keep myself in good physical condition if ever my nation calls.

When I was growing up, physical fitness was an important aspect of our character. As kids, we lived to be outside and doing physical things. I remember the days when us fellas wanted a weight bench and weights for Christmas so we could pump iron. We ran, played ball in the streets or any unoccupied parking lot, and did chores like cutting grass for pocket money.

But today, it seems the strongest muscles on some kids are their thumbs and popular culture has done nothing to strengthen their character. This listlessness has so permeated our society that according to the Wall Street Journal, “More than two-thirds of America’s youth would fail to qualify for military service because of physical, behavioral or educational shortcomings, posing challenges to building the next generation of soldiers even as the U.S. draws down troops from conflict zones.”

“The military deems many youngsters ineligible due to obesity, lack of a high-school diploma, felony convictions and prescription-drug use for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder,” according to the Wall Street Journal. “But others are now also running afoul of standards for appearance amid the growing popularity of large-scale tattoos and devices called ear gauges that create large holes in earlobes.”

We have an all-volunteer military but the requirements — especially for a smaller, more technologically-advanced force — are higher than ever. And with the Obama administration’s push for social egalitarianism in the U.S. military, it doesn’t get any better. When you add in the horrific treatment of our veterans you’d think recruitment would be suffering. Actually, it’s not.

But what is suffering is the development of America’s young people.

“We’re trying to make decision makers see this is a national-security matter—and they need to prioritize it,” said retired Major Gen. Allen Youngman. In the past, he said, “a drill sergeant could literally run the weight off a soldier as part of the regular training program,” but now, “we have young people showing up at the recruiter’s office who want to serve but are 50 or more pounds overweight.”
About a quarter of high-school graduates also can’t pass the Armed Forces Qualification Test, which measures math and reading skills, Gen. Youngman said. “They aren’t educationally qualified to join the military in any capacity, not just the high-tech jobs,” he said.

U.S. Army First Sgt. James Sawyer, who heads recruiting across a swath of Los Angeles County, said tattoos have become the most common cosmetic reason that applicants are disqualified. As the Wall Street Journal reports, the Army already banned tattoos on the face, neck and fingers, but according to regulations in effect May 1, soldiers also can’t have more than a total of four visible tattoos below the elbows and knees, and tattoos must be relatively small. The goal of the tattoo rules is to maintain a professional-looking Army, Sgt. Sawyer said. He added that “the average person in California has a tattoo.”

Why are High School JROTC programs important? It’s not so much to train young people to join the military, but rather to instill in them positive values and leadership traits — and develop them physically.

I would submit that excessive tattooing, body piercings, obesity and lack of intellectual rigor can all be rectified with a dose of focused discipline. A breakdown of the family in most minority communities doesn’t help either.

What we are witnessing is not just a crisis for our military, but a crisis for our Republic.

We are not helping our youth by letting them become like this. What is happening to this country??

barry is happening to this country, we are being destroyed from within. It’s okay to be gay or a tranny but you can’t have tattoos? Really?

From what I’ve seen of the “youth” at our local mall or the closest Starbucks, the tattoos and body piercings (especially those hideous ear gauge things that make permanent giant holes in your ears) would disqualify most of them. And I live in a white, middle class area of Atlanta! Where on earth are these kid’s parents! What the kids may learn at some point is that not only won’t the military hire them, but other employers won’t be very excited about them either. Why make your life so much harder by mutilating your body? Guess what? It is NOT… Read more »

Some background before I comment: I am a 28 year old Marine (2004-2009). I knew from a very young age that I was going to walk across that parade deck like my father and his before him, but I am the minority in that respect. I am also an avid gamer, maybe even an obsessive one. While I understand that the public opinion of “Gamers” is that we never move or have any desire outside of out little escapist worlds we are quite a different breed. Even if we were as morbidly obese as we are portrayed I do not… Read more »

P.S. Who cares about ear gauges?! Almost every single one of us had made poor dress decisions at some point (some of you were around for Disco I know it!) and ear gauges will heal back up over time. A very LONG time but they will heal.

Justin Ahlquist
Guest

Ear gauges are a safety concern, as is wedding bands and long hair. Do a combat course and get your ear gauge caught on something, climb a ladder with a wedding band on and fall, work a lathe and get your hair caught in it. I have 16 years in the military and if an incident is possible it has happened. It takes a 1000 near misses per death. Do be a retarded statistic prove darwin wrong.

Joshua Nixon
Guest

Obviously they are a concern, but saying that they can’t get in because of them is silly. They will have to let them heal most of the way before they can be shipped off but saying that they can’t serve because of them is madness.

Justin Ahlquist

I understand your side, I was dq’d for physical defect in my left knee. I had to pay for a doctor review and bring in supporting documents. Had to show I was all league in 3 sports. Its silly the things you have to go thru.

A relative did something similar, plus he had to get a bunch of letters because of an unfortunate incident that happened when was a juvenile, but which he told his recruiter about. One of them was from a National Guard, 2 star general, and one was from a reserve Captain, moi. Another was from his orthopedist.

Then when he got to basic, he blew his knee out again and was shipped home before completing basic.

This new tattoo policy is a way for Obama to shrink the military. No one cares if you can see your tattoos in PT gear. I agree that in Class A’s a tattoo shouldn’t be seen, but PT’s is ridiculous. The morale of the military is at an all time low and the only Hagel seems to be worried about it recruiting a handful of transsexuals! These guys in charge couldn’t find their own ass with both hands an a recon platoon to help them!

1. should be a comma after “no” in your first sentence.
2. you shouldn’t start a sentence with and. In your second sentence you should have just used a semicolon or comma before and as you were continuing the same thought as the first sentence or just drop the word and.
3. Than and not then in this case, as you are making a comparison.
4. Third sentence is a sentence fragment / prepositional phrase.
5.” Can (or do) you see the picture? That is”
6. “I worked as… for 43 years.”
Etc etc. When you grow up you will learn some of these things.

Marine corps bootcamp physically was a joke. It helped I ran 7-15 miles a night through high school and college, played sports, rode mountain bikes, did construction. Now I’m paying for it physically and my body sometimes refuses to operate but thats the life of a Marine. I’ve taken the asvab twice scored an 87 both times I wouldn’t consider myself highly intelligent, just enough to fake it.

Some NCOs are useless too. The stereotype of the fat and corrupt supply sergeant is based on a few kernels of truth.

OTOH, I know of a prior service guy who got called back for operations in the Middle East. They didn’t care how fat he was, as long as he could sit in an air conditioned tent and keep the computers happy, the Army was happy with him. Even if they had to special order his uniforms from Omar the Tent Maker.

They can’t pass simple tests after graduating high school, and you’re blaming the 17 year old in this equation? Not the failing American school system or lack of education funding? Yes, let’s pour more money into defense (where America spends more money than the next 8 countries combined, http://pgpf.org/Chart-Archive/0053_defense-comparison) and continue to neglect the youth…and then blame them for it.

Let’s also consider that spending on K-12 education (all money – local, state and Federal) is much greater than the spending on Defense. Let’s also consider that education spending has fewer constraints …and less accountability. (Everyone complains about $600 toilet seats, but few complain about the bloated school budgets that grow, while the ‘graduating’ students are dumber and dumber.) Yes – the US spends MORE per student on education than other countries – but we get far less for or spending than other countries. Why is that??? The “No Child Left Behind” is only creating a nation of idiots. If a child doesn’t know their multiplication they get passed. If they fail every class, because they don’t do the homework and turn it in or if they don’t understand the curriculum, they get passed. No one is advocating the failed “No Child Left Behind”. What we SHOULD be advocating is for educational reform, and if your child needed to be held back another year in 7th grade, then he should have been. But the idea is that we need to invest in programs with better custom programs for children of ALL learning levels – not just assuming everyone learns the same way, as NCLB does. We cannot continue to complain about the next generation’s ineptitude when we do not invest financially and mentally in their success as their guardians, parents, guides, and role models.… Read more »

It resulted in so much emphasis on test scores that in many schools they just the test, and little else. The real problem is cultural, the parents or lack there of, and centralization of educational requirements and funding. If a kid knows he is willfully signing up for the military, Their being in physical fit, is legendary. If you can’t run, you can’t do sit ups or push ups, then you have two choices, get in shape or don’t join. It has nothing to do with a failing education system.
