As I previously stated, it was never the intent of ISIS to march on Baghdad and have itself drawn into a major sectarian conflagration in an urban environment.
This 21st Century version of a blitzkrieg has occurred before our eyes, and achieved what anyone who understands operational objectives could have anticipated: an Islamist jihadist caliphate in what used to be known as Iraq — Obama’s signature achievement.
Now the ISIS force seeks to consolidate and is soliciting for additional like-minded Islamic jihadists and terrorists to flock to their newly-established borderless region – even going so far as producing a recruitment video in English featuring British and Australian recruits.
As reported by the New York Daily News, “The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, an al-Qaida break-away organization, declared Sunday the creation of a new ‘caliphate’ — an Islamic state led by one religious and political leader, or ‘caliph’ — that covers 600 miles in Iraq and Syria.”
“The Sunni Muslim militant organization named its own leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the caliph. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, commonly known as ISIS, made the declaration in a statement released on the Internet, calling on Muslim factions worldwide to pledge allegiance.”
History shows us how Hitler took the Rhineland without a shot and then turned towards the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia, and then Poland before the world woke up. By then it was rather late as France fell and England was being bombed.
The Obama administration has pledged to send some 75 hellfire missiles to Iraq, which is estimated to last about 72 hours. Russia is sending support by way of jet fighters — Putin taking advantage once again to advance his influence.
ISIS spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani said in a statement that the caliphate is “the dream in all the Muslims’ hearts” and “the hope of all jihadists.” “It is incumbent upon all Muslims to pledge allegiance,” he said. As the New York Daily News reports, “ISIS wants to recreate a sweeping Muslim state in the style of the caliphates that stretched from the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf during the Middle Ages.”
The purported new caliphate is nearly 600 miles wide, stretching from Diyala in eastern Iraq to Aleppo in western Syria, according to the ISIS announcement, Al Jazeera reported Sunday. The organization already controls large swathes of territory along the borders of Iraq, Syria and Jordan.
This declaration may seem quite innocuous to some but it does threaten the existence of secular countries in the Middle East and will fuel more uprisings — certainly not an Arab Spring but more like a Jihadist Dream and a global nightmare.
Speaking to the New York Daily News, Charles Lister, a Brookings Doha Center visiting fellow, called it “likely the most significant development in international jihadism since 9/11.” “The impact of this announcement will be global as al-Qaida affiliates and independent jihadist groups must now definitively choose to support and join the Islamic State or to oppose it,” Lister said.
This is an area where strict Sharia law will rule, meaning law as per the Koran. And there are already reports of Christians, whose civilizations pre-date Islam, fleeing and those not fleeing ending up raped or killed. Assyrians, Chaldeans, and others are finding themselves faced with the true possibility of genocide at the hands of these barbarians seeking to return to a 7th Century civilizational construct — this time with 21st Century technology.
In less than three years after the complete retreat of U.S. forces from Iraq, we now have what al-Qaida dreamed of establishing. The closest we have seen to this was in Afghanistan when the Taliban established “The Base” — and we know how that ended up for America.
The only bright spot in this whole situation is the Kurdish Army known as the Peshmerga — a tough and feared fighting force. What we must do is support the Kurds to finally have their own country and enable a base of operations for what will eventually come about — a combat operation to wholeheartedly destroy the newly-declared Islamic state. This is not a defined or recognized state and cannot be negotiated with. There will be only one course of action.
The question is, will we take action? As it was in Hitler’s time, the enemy doesn’t believe we will.
