Are Islamists rehearsing an attack on our power grid?

You may recall we reported here on threats and an attack to our power grid system in the United States– it wasn’t just an isolated, one-off event.

This past Sunday, Israel National News Arutz Sheva carried an op-ed by Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, Executive Director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and Director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, who says “for the first time in history, a terrorist attack on the electric power grid has blacked-out an entire nation – in this case Yemen.”

Pry says: media attention has been so focused on the terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and their brutal conquest of northern Iraq and advance toward Baghdad, that the perhaps even more significant terrorist threat has been ignored.

On June 9, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), used rocket-propelled grenade launchers and mortars to destroy transmission towers, plunging the whole of Yemen into blackout. The AQAP blackout of Yemen’s electric grid has gone largely unreported.

Yemen, a nation of 24 million, is an important U.S. ally in the war on terrorism and has been the scene of some of the most significant episodes of that war. AQAP, based in Yemen, is notorious for its aggressive and ingenious terror operations against the United States. It was in Yemen where a drone strike killed Islamic terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki.

Good riddance.

As Pry reminds us, on October 12, 2000, AQAP used plastic explosives to convert a motorized dinghy into a torpedo that blasted the USS Cole, killing and injuring 56 sailors, and nearly sinking the sophisticated guided missile destroyer, worth almost one billion dollars.

So why should we be concerned about this event in Yemen?

According to Pry’s report, “North Korea has provided Yemen with at least 15 Scud-B mobile missiles, capable of delivering nuclear, chemical, biological or high-explosive warheads weighing one ton to a range of 300 kilometers. Iran has demonstrated that Scud missiles can be ship-launched from a freighter. As a member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, one of our concerns was an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) attack. What this entails is firing a nuclear device high into the altitude for detonation.”

Pry cites a study by the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission which found that “attacks on just nine key transformer substations could blackout the entire nation for weeks or months. The Congressional Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Commission warned that a nuclear Scud missile launched from a freighter could blackout the U.S. for a year or more, killing up to 9 of 10 Americans by starvation and societal collapse.”

This is not some Flash Gordon comic book scenario, this is for real — this is not “whack-a-mole.”

Killing bin Laden meant nothing. That was not a strategic success — just as when our U.S. forces shot down Japanese Admiral Yamamoto, the Japanese did not surrender or quit fighting.

Last year a terrorist teleconference was attended by more than 20 leaders of al-Qaida and affiliates participating from the Middle East and North Africa.

Al-Qaida members in the conference included Nigeria’s Boko Haram, Pakistani Taliban, al-Qaida in Iraq, al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb, al-Qaida in Uzbekistan and others. One U.S. intelligence officer reportedly described the gathering as “a legion of doom.”

Could the terror spreading across the Middle East today simply be the execution of the plot planned last year? Pry points out that “media reporting acts as if the ISIS conquest of northern Iraq, Taliban attacks on nuclear-armed Pakistan, and the terror blackout in Yemen are unrelated. But all of these actors were plotting something together last year.”

A leader with strategic vision looks for indicators and warnings and recognizes the enemy — this is so obviously lacking in the Obama administration. Let us never forget 9-11 didn’t just come together during the first year of the Bush administration. It was being built and planned during the Clinton administration — is history repeating itself? And this next one will not be just about flying airplanes into buildings.

We can’t sit back and whine that “America is war weary” – because the Islamists sure ain’t! Remember, Hitler took the Rhineland without firing a shot — of course the lack of history taught in our schools means many have no freakin’ clue as to what I said, or its significance.

I gotta tell ya, I feel like I’m reading and watching all this unfold just as Churchill did. I don’t want to see my homeland bombed as Churchill did, but I will fight with his same dogged determination. We had best awaken or prepare to pay a heavy cost.

  1. This happened in Minnesota during the late 1970s, when farmers were protesting a high voltage line running from a power plant in NoDakota to the Twin Cities. Protesters called ‘Bolt Weevils’ took down 20 towers and shot out 10,000+ insulators, At one point over 50% of the MN state police were protecting the power lines.

    So true!

    • LOL because Yemen is crawling with Islamists (that’s why the American Taliban, Walker, went there), and its gov’t will find itself targeted by revenge-minded Islamists if it dares oppose them. This is why Pakistan allows drone strikes. The gov’t protests them for public consumption, while quietly providing coordinates for the next strike. The people prefer the drones to the Pakistan Air Force, which tends to level entire villages while drones take out only one or two addresses. Meanwhile, our aszhats parrot the Islamists BS about how “that was a wedding”.

      • But we have killed more than 200 children and women, confirmed, in Pakistan, a country we are not at war with, with these Obama drone strikes.
If Bush had done that (he didn’t) he’d have been tried for war crimes. Don’t defend the Obama admin for these murders, please. Go to Democratic Underground for that

      • War cannot be sanitized. It kills anybody in it path, that is the nature of the beast. So don’t whine about women and children. That should be the no.1 reason to live in peace. To these people life means nothing. Killing women mean no more fighters produced and killing children mean none growing up to fight.

  3. Just let me ask real quick. If we know somehow how vulnerable the power grid is, it has been spread around on the internet, do you not think that all of our enemies are planning attacks on it? Would that not be common sense? Of course they are.

    • The enemy has already attacked the grid last year near San Jose, Ca. And almost succeeded.

With all due respect we’re going to pay a heavy cost either way. When the next attack occurs if we don’t respond in kind with a ratio of 10/1 we’ll be inviting future attack.
The equivalent response to that 10/1 ratio would be Major General William T. Sherman’s scorched earth policy in his march through Georgia to the sea. Remove their will to fight and they will crawl back into their holes for the next 100 years.
The politicians don’t have the b*lls to throw the ROE out the window and release the dogs of war. The hands of the military will be tied behind their backs, it will be up to us by weapon and torch.
Look to the Buddhists in Burma over the past year as the example of what we need use as a first step and take it to it’s conclusion.

    • People are blind because the alternative is to horrible to contemplate. There fore we are just like Peter crying wolf. But the wolf did show up didn’t he?
I pray that there will be enough of us that are aware and are willing to die for our beliefs. I agree scorch the earth and save a lot of lives and the snakes will slither back under their rocks.

  5. In my spare time I write military/political fiction. In the novel I’m currently rewriting, an attack on the electrical grid preempts the actual attack on San Diego. From my research, it wouldn’t take much at all to bring the US to its knees for days causing billions in damage. Launching multiple delayed-time drones to attack critical juncture points in our system can cause black-outs, nuclear plants to scramble offline, and general chaos. A prolonged attack, again the perpetrator can be days gone out of the country, would deplete the diesel required to run back-up generators at hospitals, stock trading centers, food storage facilities, and the list goes on and on. The worse part? There’s squat we can do about it and the cost to initiate the attack is incredibly low.

    • Remember a few years back there was this rash of private jets crashing in the midwest, and it was discovered they were drug smuggling planes runners would load up with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of drugs, enough to make losing a 7-figure plane profitable, and they’d dump the stuff once they were past the southern border, set the autopilot, parachute out, and the plane would continue on autopilot until it ran out of fuel a few hours later and crash in Arizona, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas?

So-called ‘bad actors’ could just do the same 9/11 style and kamikaze these junctions.

  6. start learning primative skills, and get non electric pumps, mechanics, parts, food, water and weapons… We may need them.

  7. If our electrical grid (i.e. the achilles heel of our civilization) is that vulnerable, why aren’t we putting all our energy and resources into overhauling it until this ominous threat of complete collapse is gone?

    • Because the collapse of the United States is all in the plan. The UN will come in to retore order and O will remain on the throne as the American Union leader

  8. Americans have been dumbed down. They can’t comprehend any longer or connect the dots of seemingly unrelated events. So sad.

  9. I thank you for posting this. I know above all, God is speaking and warning America, will we listen? I’m personally preparing as best I can with the purchase of items and becoming better educated. Learning how to live off-the-grid, becoming educated with “Faraday cages” and etc. I don’t understand why we aren’t doing more to make sure our grids are better protected. I will continue to pray for us, speak on it (although many won’t listen) and prepare. I trust God and I pray we will get our heads out of the sand. Again, I thank you for sharing!

  10. Leave it t the MSM that they are not related as the propaganda machine rolls on for barry.
In reality a blind man can see that they are a grand plan. The 35 Al Qaeda camps in this country aren’t just sitting around singing campfire songs. They are training, drawing up plans. for what? No one has to have a good imagination to see that things are coming our way and that is NOT a good thing

  11. You have to explain this in a way the Low-Information-Voters can understand. You can’t say:

“As a member of the House Armed Services
Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, one of our concerns
was an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) attack. What this entails is firing a
nuclear device high into the altitude for detonation.”

    You have to say:

“Your iPhones won’t work, and you won’t be able to post to facebook anymore.”

  12. You can’t launch an EMP attack from a scud. Well, you can but, it would be like shooting a bottle rocket at the top of the Empire State Building from the sidewalk

  13. Sounds like we need to expand our warfaring to more places and for decades longer so the MIC can make a few more trillion dollars off the taxpayers, that’s the synopsis I get from this.
Whether you’re on the red side or the blue side of politics, make no mistake the color both want is GREEN, and the bigger these conflicts can be inflamed to, the more green they can extract.

Look at ISIS. The very Special Forces we’re sending in to ‘stop’ them are the same people who trained and armed them at out expense and behest in Jordan earlier this year. We’ve gone beyond even playing both sides to playing ALL sides, and some are making a ton of bank on it.

  14. There’s no way firing a nuclear-tipped scud launched in Yemen could black out the power grid in the U.S.. However, if the warhead were light enough, maybe they could add a booster rocket to get it up to 500km or so. From that altitude, the EMP would damage vulnerable electronics and the power grid throughout the Middle East, and probably affect a big chunk of Europe too. More importantly though, it’d leave an intense radiation belt that would likely cause most satellites currently in orbit to fail within a few weeks.

    • If you read the article, it says scuds could be launched from a freighter. The freighter would be off our coast, not parked in Yemen…

  15. Wake up and smell the Evil people! What you are watching unfold has been foretold thousands of years ago. Time to make sure you are right with the G*d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Lord Jesus Christ!

2 Chronicles 7:14 King James Version (KJV)

14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and
pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I
hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
