There’s nothing like the truth to erode the credibility of America’s chief executive. Remember when President Obama told Bill O’Reilly during his Super Bowl interview “There is not a smidgen of corruption,” referring to the IRS?
Not only does it appear there might be a “smidgen” of corruption, there is apparently a steaming pile of incompetence as well. According to a report by the Associated Press, the Internal Revenue Service has paid more than $2.8 million in bonuses to employees with recent disciplinary problems, including $1 million to workers who owed back taxes. More than 2,800 workers got bonuses despite facing a disciplinary action in the previous year, including 1,150 who owed back taxes. A report by J. Russell George, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration indicates the bonuses were awarded from October 2010 through December 2012. George also uncovered the IRS targeting of conservative groups for which he was viciously attacked by liberal progressives.
George’s report said the bonus program doesn’t violate federal regulations, but it’s inconsistent with the IRS mission to enforce tax laws. Other examples of misconduct by workers getting bonuses included misusing government credit cards for travel, drug use, violent threats and fraudulently claiming unemployment benefits.
Having served in the military for 22 years, I can attest to the fact that misuse of government credit cards, drug use, and violent threats do not result in a bonus. It does result in a kick in the butt by way of punishment and/or separation from service.
Every year our men and women in uniform and our military retirees have to beg for a simple Cost of Living Allowance (COLA ) increase. Instead of our hard-earned resources going to those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect our freedom, our tax dollars are given to a government agency with low standards of integrity and character, and whose tactics are fear and intimidation against the people who pay their salaries.
This is the Beltway Bandit way of doing business. They tout that there are no raises for federal government employees — they get “bonuses” instead.
With this thought process, perhaps Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy should get an IRS bonus since, according to Harry Reid, he supposedly owes back taxes.
There is a growing separation between Washington DC and the rest of America. It’s clearly becoming a den of deceit where the rules applicable to everyone else don’t apply to government employees. This is why we need to move towards tax reform that reduces the power, influence and corruption of the IRS. This news is a blatantly disrespectful slap in the face of hard-working American taxpayers. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of turning the other cheek.
As a commander in the Army, budgeting guidance and spending priorities for my unit came from me. President Obama is the chief executive and the head of the Executive Branch of the U.S. government. Perhaps if he had some experience being in charge of something—anything– he would know how to manage subordinate agencies. Other than jet-setting around and giving incessant staged speeches, what are Obama’s priorities?
“Not a smidgen of IRS corruption?” As if he’d recognize it…
