Strange irony: Pakistan girls’ school names library after Osama bin Laden

All during the 2012 election season, President Barack Hussein Obama crowed that “Osama bin Laden is dead.” But as a former member of his staff once asked, “what difference, at this point, does it make?”

You can kill the person, but does that kill a movement, an ideology, a systematic indoctrination of future generations? Of course not.

As reported by Munir Ahmed writing for the Associated Press (via Army Times), a new library at an Islamic seminary for girls near Pakistan’s capital has been named the Library of Osama bin Laden, the Martyr. Cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz, a radical preacher who runs the Jamia Hafsa madrassa, wanted to honor the memory of the al-Qaida leader.

As an aside, I must say it’s still somewhat of a mystery as to how Pakistanis could have been so completely “blind” as to the existence of the world’s number one terrorist target right under their nose in the city that housed the Pakistan Military Academy. Or maybe not.

According to the report, the library’s name has garnered attention across Pakistan, where public opinion remains strongly anti-American and religious students today still idolize the man behind the Sept. 11 terror attacks. But his image increasingly has faded from public view in recent years, as Pakistan has seen thousands killed in its own war against its local Taliban. A public that once named its own children after the Saudi millionaire has grown increasingly angry with militant violence. Not the first time…

As all politics are local, so it is with terror attacks. You may recall the turning point in the Iraq War was the so-called “Sunni Awakening” which was actually a local tribal response to the brutality and violence of al-Qaida in the western Al Anbar province. The result was that al-Qaida was denied sanctuary and American forces found alliances in a new common enemy.

Nonetheless, while local Pakistanis may display anger towards the Taliban, strategically many still see America as an enemy. The slain al-Qaida chief is still regarded as a hero by most students at Islamic schools, or madrassas — so ideologically he remains a viable martyr.

According to the spokesman for Cleric Aziz, “Osama bin Laden is a hero and he is a martyr and that is why he selected Osama bin Laden’s name for the library.” The madrassas are an important aspect of education in predominantly Muslim Pakistan which educate tens of thousands of students. Most of the religious schools provide free food, tuition and even board for students who come from other parts of the country. Some also serve to radicalize youth to join militants. Aziz’s students have joined anti-American protests put on by the hard-line cleric.

A bit of background on Cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz – he was a prayer leader at Islamabad’s Red Mosque — a former militant hideout that the army, on orders from then-President Pervez Musharraf, raided in 2007. The raid killed dozens of extremists and others, and unleashed a wave of retaliatory militant attacks across Pakistan. Aziz was arrested by police during the raid when he tried to escape disguised as a woman wearing a burqa. Later freed, he began running a boy’s and girl’s school connected to the mosque.

So where does the money come from to fund this free education? One answer is petrodollars. Have y’all noticed gasoline prices? I just paid $4.47 a gallon. Gee, I remember when it was $1.89 gallon in January 2009, during the good old days before Obama took office… In any event, why don’t we simply wean America off supporting OPEC and allowing the further proliferation of radical Islamist ideology in these schools? Look at how being held hostage to energy resourcing is affecting Europe.

Back in Pakistan, Abdul Rehman, the school’s administrator, says the library will only carry books about the teachings of Islam. So much for tolerance.

But frankly, it’s not very different here in the supposedly free United States. We allowed the same misogynistic ideology to prevent Ayaan Hirsi Ali, an advocate for Muslim women’s rights, from speaking at Brandeis University. “Coexist” only applies to some.

I think most people find it “strange,” Col. West. The problem in that the left finds the strangeness interesting and the right finds the strangeness repulsive.

Petro dollars??? What about US Dollars??? A number of media reports state that the US gave Pakistan $1.5 billion dollars in aid last year. Other media reports quoting Congressional estimates suggest the US gave $18 billion to $19 billion to Pakistan since 9/11. We lost 2,977 Americans in the 9/11 attack (and that figure DOES NOT include the terrorist A$$ wipes that died in the attack) that Bin Laden was behind and Pakistan is honoring him???? We should honor our people that we lost and not send them one more damn dime. And at the same time our government tells… Read more »

If you teach children that the U.S. is evil and the don’t know any better, then they will grow up to be haters. The idea that barry gives Billions to Pakistan is ludicrous at best. You cannot turn enemies into friends if they are determined to be your enemy no matter what you do or say. Money doesn’t buy friends, it pays off enemies that laugh at you. Barry does not want us weaned off OPEC. that’s why he doesn’t Okay the Keystone Pipeline. He wants the middle east to get as much money from us as possible and wants… Read more »

In my career I found out one thing quickly, you have to respond to people in a way they understand or they will perceive you as weak. In our failure to understand the way they think and in turn adjust our reaction to them on their level, we have a reputation as weak, stupid, and taking advantage of us is a great joke to them and what we deserve.

When dealing with scum sometimes you have to get into the gutter and speak their language, tactics and gain respect.

Barry keeps thinking that if he’s nice enough to play with our enemies, they will start liking him. We need to stop sending money to Pakistan. Teaching children to despise us, will only make them mean and frustrating inside. Pakistan should be left to the wolves.

I am reminded of the quote: “It is the economy…”. Well, here we should say: “It is the religion…!” MOSLEMS HATE THE UNITED STATES! All the money in the world will never change this. Personally, I feel there is only one solution that prevents us from living in perpetual fear, CRUSADES -2014. LET’S FINISH THIS! THEY WANT HOLY WAR, SO LET’S GIVE IT TO THEM!

Just how much more proof do we in the West need, to come to the realization that Pakistan is NOT our friend?!

Mohammad (pbuh) knew 1400 years back that it is the Christians who will help in the spread of Islam. Consider this Quranic verse: >> Strongest in enmity to the Muslims are Jews and Pagans; nearest in love to the Muslims are Christians: because among Christians are men devoted to learning (priests & monks) and they are not arrogant. [Quran 5:82] Now we have catholic popes and organized Christian churches attempting to dialoge with a death cult in the false hope of inter-faith dialogue. One does not say stop inter-faith dialogue. But know who you do it with. With Hindus, Buddhists,… Read more »

Because of the Alaskan Pipeline many friends were able to buy their own home, payoff their mortgages and pay for the kids college. Approving the Keystone Pipeline truly is a no-brainer and…obama hasn’t one.

West, why he rant? Americans love Jesse James and he was a gang leader, thief and muderer of innocent people and 2 police officers. He was forced into a life of crime after the Missouri Republican party took James’ rights away.

I think it is very important to know that the state of Pakistan has nothing to do with this library, and it is a private undertaking by a religious fundamentalist, which by the way most Pakistani’s aren’t. Also, there are many more secular schools in Pakistan than there are Madrasas, and while Islamic education is present, it is not the dominant force that has led the Pakistani’s to have anti-American sentiment.
