Faithful and True

A fellow Redleg artilleryman with whom I served in 4th Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment in the 1st Infantry Division, Alan Rohlfing, sent me this picture as a reminder.

It was from the Desert of Iraq after major combat operations had ceased, Easter sunrise service. Our Battalion Commander, COL John R. Gingrich, a strong and devout Christian man, brought us together at the Battalion Command Post and had the three tubes of our M109A5 howitzers raised to high angle.

Of course today, with people like Mikey Weinstein and his oxymoronic Military Religious Freedom Foundation, and with the complicit support of the Obama administration, we would be severely reprimanded for such an action.

The 5th Field Artillery Regiment motto is “Faithful and True”. It is the Artillery Regiment of one Alexander Hamilton and today Alpha Battery 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment carries the distinction of “Hamilton’s Own.” It is also the artillery unit, Battery D, 5th US Artillery under the command of LT Charles Hazlett, that supported the Union at the Battle of Gettysburg day two on Little Round Top. That Regimental motto is steeped in history and, if you ponder, certainly describes our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for our salvation and spiritual victory through redemption.

I remember tears in my eyes on that morning long ago in the desert in 1991. And Alan, thanks for bringing those tears back to me this morning.

That’s a s shame you can’t worship God in the Military anymore . I remember when Satanism was aloud to worship . I wonder if the military will stop this as well.

That is so not true. I retired in 07 and worked for the chaplains. Services still go on and overseas and out in the field they are well attended.
And BTW, it is “allowed”.

Revelation 19:11-16 The Righteous Judge And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. — His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood:and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and… Read more »

here is the question artillery combat unit …were you awarded the CAB ? i served in vietnam 25th inf div. 3/13arty b-btry combat unit but seems we are not entitled to recieve and award of the CAB — COMBAT ACTION BADGE …FAIR OR WHAT /?

Didn’t have a CAB back in Vietnam. So how could it be unfair? They were authorized for people from the beginning of actions in Afghanistan in 2001. So how can you be awarded something that never existed in your term of service. For those who serve for the bling or think you should have gotten some served for all the wrong reasons. Whether you were drafted or enlisted, we served for God and Country, not for some piece of metal that means diddley squat in the the scheme of things. If you made it out of combat with your life,… Read more »

It’s not quite that retroactive I guess. The CAB didn’t come about until 2005 or so.

You don’t understand. Many guys have grandkids who are pushing them because of PC. You know what you would do for your family. Even if you feel like a REMF, if it was your grandkid, what would you do?

Talked with a grunt a few years ago about his service. He was ‘bad mouthing’ REMFs. I asked him if he had ever called in an air strike on or near his company. He said “of course”. I then asked him if his PRC 27 worked. He said “Yes, thank God”. I then asked him who made sure that radio worked……who loaded the bombs on the F-4s and who in the he** made certain those planes were ready to fly when the call came in. He did not answer me. We both new the answer: REMFs!

Do you ever journal or diary your feelings and thought about Viet Nam? I know that sounds “prissy” for a soldier but so many thought and feelings can help, hey and ya never know, it may lead to a best seller if you have the talent. The best advice I ever got was when I was trying to get over a divorce after a long (and what I thought was a happy) marriage; let go of the anger because it hurts and destroys positively no one but you. She was so right. My ex could have cared less if I… Read more »

ShamanBlair

Agreed, but what gives you the idea it “might sound prissy” for a soldier to keep records? MANY soldiers have, & in fact, those who want to read them gain insight into what his life & war were REALLY like! It’s one of the ways history was recorded! What’s “prissy” about that??

Laura Thompson
Guest

I never thought it was prissy and therefore would never had suggested it but I feared guys might think so. I think it quite manly and merely suggested as a way to gather thoughts and let go of negative feelings. I know of some men who would see a diary as a thing women only might do.

ThoroughlyDisqusTED

Far from true! Christians have been attacked, especially Christians in military service. The LTC did not attack Obama, he stated a fact. Christ is being slowly and systematically removed from the American landscape, and the American government is leading the assault in many instances. That’s just a fact. Thank you, LTC West, for stating the obvious. Happy Easter.

Brendan
Guest

Presuming that Obama would be upset at soldiers displaying a cross symbol at Easter services 23 years ago is not an example of stating a fact.

It was a completely unnecessary presumptive statement, written solely as an excuse to throw an attack at Obama into an otherwise sweet story.

FuzzyBobby
Guest

Are you a Muslim???? Or a Communist??? Or both???

Brendan
Guest

What a dumb question.
I am neither.
Because I thought criticizing the President for an imaginary hypothetical reaction to something 23 years was absurd… you assume I must be a muslim or a communist?
How does your brain work?

oldntrd
Guest

I do not agree. These soldiers held a service and used what they had to symbolize a Cross. I’m sure if they could have they would have used something else but they didn’t so as an ex combat soldier I praise them for having the service.

Brendan
Guest

I am not saying the soldiers should not have displayed cross symbols at Easter services. They have every right to do so.
I am saying that Mr West’s recollection is a sweet and moving story and there was no reason, especially on Easter, to throw in an attack on Obama by presuming how he would have reacted to something so harmless 23 years ago.

oldntrd
Guest

You do have a point but I can’t see how it could have been avoided. The thoughts of younger soldiers not being allowed to have a service like this because of Obama is too heavy to not comment.

Laura Thompson
Guest

Thank you so much Col West for reminding us that our country was once steeped in faith and that our soldiers were the first to honor it along with their sacrificial service. Thank you for your service Sir and please stay in the fight. We are desperate for leaders like you and most of America is praying that someday political correctness and progressive thought and action aka communism will be a distant memory and written into our history as the horrific truth that it has proven to be.

Oh, what a lovely story. It’s odd, but when I first saw the photo–before I read the message!–it hit me how much these guns resembled crosses. We have GOT to reclaim our religious freedom–even if it means we’re killed for it. He deserves it, for what He did for us!

I was there, A 4/5 FA maintenance 63D20 but don’t remember them being A5s. I cried too, but for a different reason, seeing an instrument of WAR displayed in such a fashion celebrating Jesus our Savior Prophet of Peace and Compassion Peace be upon Him to me was gross distortion of his Word. I don’t remember Jesus ever raising an army or asking an army to go forward in His name, do you?

Saltporkdoc

First, I appreciate your service and your faith!
But (I’m sorry I cannot direct you to the precise Book, Chapter or verse) actually Christ at one point admonishes his followers to sell their cloaks and buy a sword. Even He recognized the need for a strong defense which as you know sometimes requires offensive action.

I cry tears with you Allen, even though I have not even been in the Military. That picture reminds me of the sacrifice all that have and still serve to this day. I know people that still say it was a senseless war, then and now. I pray no one will relive another 9-11 or Boston attack or others that the Islamic extremist have taken or wounded from us. Their is nothing senseless about that!!
