Another former GITMO detainee killed waging jihad in Syria

Ibrahim Bin Shakaran

Catch and release might work with fish, but it’s not working so well with jihadists.

As The Long War Journal reports, we have another case of recidivism with Ibrahim Bin Shakaran, a Moroccan who spent more than three years at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility before being released to Moroccan custody. Bin Shakaran was killed while leading a jihadist group fighting Syrian government forces and was “martyred, Insha’Allah, in battles for Hilltop # 45 in Latakia,” according to Kavkaz Center, a propaganda arm of the Islamic Caucasus Emirate.

And he isn’t the first former GITMO detainee from Morocco to have been killed in Syria while waging jihad for Sham al Islam. Another ex-Guantanamo detainee, known as Mohammed al ‘Alami, was killed last year.

According to the report, Sham al Islam has been fighting alongside al-Qaida’s Syrian branch, the Al Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant, as well as Ahrar al Sham and the Army of the Emigrants and Supporters in an ongoing offensive in the coastal province of Latakia. Sham al Islam was one of several rebel groups including Al Nusrah Front, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham, Ahrar al Sham, Jaish al Muhajireen wal Ansar (or Army of Emigrants and Helpers), and Suquor al Izz that fought in another offensive in Latakia in August 2013 in which major human rights abuses were committed.

But fear not folks, because our warrior leader Obama assured us these are just “junior varsity” groups — I guess that means they kill you with smaller caliber weapons.

Weak and ineffective liberal policies are no match against an enemy who plays by no rules. Remember all the political ranting about the “enhanced interrogation program” and the declassified report as called for by Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Ca)? And Nancy Pelosi obviously had amnesia when she was briefed as House Speaker on the program and said not a peep. These same liberals are all up in arms about GITMO and the “mistreatment” given to the detainees there. Even with proof of recidivism, our dear leader, Barack Hussein Obama, has said GITMO goes against our better character and is still trying to shut the facility down and release detainees.

So let me make my position very clear. I don’t give a damn about these Islamic jihadists, terrorists — or whatever you want to call them. The bottom line is protecting Americans. We are fighting terrorists, non-state, non-uniform belligerents who do not deserve any rights on the battlefield. They target civilians and enact the most heinous of war atrocities, yet liberal progressives in this country are stuck on this stupid issue of trying to find moral relativism with barbaric fiends from the 7th century.

Those that we do not kill, we should keep locked up and off the battlefield. Imagine the message we’re sending our men and women in uniform who are fighting these bastards — and then we play a kumbaya game of “catch and release.” It’s unconscionable!

Liberal progressives are not capable of defending you or this Republic.

  1. Col West, If the GITMO detainees go to Syria and get killed all the better. The more that get killed, the less we have to deal with later on.SHip them all to Syria and let them die

  2. I would thank God if your voice would penetrate the thick-skulled people who voted in these liberal progressives. Maybe then they would realize what a grave mistake they have made.

Come on now, do we have a little reading comprehension problem?
Lynda in Scotland was not talking about this article … she was talking about the ‘thick skulled people who voted in these liberal progressives’.

By now even you have an answer to Lynda’s question ‘Maybe then they would realize what a grave mistake they have made’. … You made a big #uckin mistake two times in a row. Nice going.

      • What mistake did I make twice in a row?

And of course her comment was talking about this article… she wrote it in the comments section for this article.

      • Voting for this socialist wannabe is a grave mistake and you will see it down the road, we all will. He caters to the women he caters to the illegal immigrants he caters to the Muslim community, he ignores the American people. Just look at some of what he has done as executive orders. I’m libertarian and personally ALL politicians are in it for themselves along with Congress, Senate and House, all seeking the most out of the benefits they can aquire from our pockets!!!!!

      • While I disagree with some (not all) of your criticism of Obama, I am sorry. To disappoint you, but I did not vote for him.

  3. Ibrahim Bin Shakaran was released from Gitmo and handed over to the Moroccans back in 2004, when George Bush was president… not Obama.

The other Gitmo prisoner released and killed in Syria that you mentioned , Mohammed al ‘Alami, was released in 2006, also when Bush was president.

These facts seem to be missing from your article where you somehow blame liberals and Obama.

    • So since you are critical of Bush letting them go, would you say it is a bad idea for Obama to continue down this path stating that he wants to close Gitmo

      • I think it is an impossible situation.
As Americans, the idea of holding prisoners indefinitely contradicts our values.

        But…

We are not fighting a standing army that can be defeated or a government that can be toppled.
We are fighting groups of individuals with a shared ideology in a conflict that will likely last generations.

A prisoner like Ibrahim Bin Shakaran is a good example of the moral dilemma we face.
He was a sworn enemy of the US and trained in terrorist camps, but was captured before he had the chance to actually fight US forces.
We couldn’t let him go because he was a sworn enemy… but we couldn’t exactly hold him forever when he actually hadn’t done anything yet.

        It’s a tough call.
Personally, I’d like to see them all dead… but i wouldn’t want the country I love to lower itself and lose the moral superiority that makes us truly great.

it’s a tough decision and I’m glad I don’t have to make that.

In truth, i’m not critical of Bush for turning Ibrahim Bin Shakaran over to Moroccan custody. i think that may have been a reasonable decision and I don’t think he anticipated the Moroccans would release him.

I only brought it up because i am critical of Allen West for blaming the release of Ibrahim Bin Shakaran on Obama and liberals.

      • Good reply. Nice to have a decent conversation for a change with someone who may have opposing political views. Dems with your level of education and research into a topic do not bother me at all and you have every right as an American to your opinion. The ones that bother me are the ones who think Obama is some kind of Messiah and would not change that opinion regardless of his actions.

    • Brendan

Don’t worry there is plenty to blame Obama about — how much time do you have, grab a tablet of paper-you will need it for notes.

      • Oh, I agree.
He has plenty of real things he did that he can take blame for.
Blaming him for things he’s not responsible for only takes away attention from the things he actually is responsible for.

    • Ahh but Obama has released several detainees who now are in jail and some are still on the streets keeping their nose clean or being very careful! It’s unfortunate that the law has no choice to release these moronic evil prisoners, whether one pres or another does so it’s no problem, the law is the law. Good to see them get wiped out tho

    • I don’t remember Bush ever saying that we should release any of the detainees. Not an expert, but pretty sure he is the one who set the policy of NOT letting enemy combatants back out to kill. “where you somehow blame…”

  4. Thanks for letting him out. The piece of shiet is dead now and we didn’t have to continue spending our money feeding and sheltering the turd. Drop the rest off in the ocean and let them swim where ever they want to. Give them some can rations. See, I’m considerate!

  5. President Obama takes no prisoners, bar none. The best remedy against recidivism is a bullet between the eyes. What we should we do with them in jail? GED programs? They are better dead then living on the taxpayer teat.

  6. Everyone knows that upon release, they will go back to what they were doing before they were captured. Why don’t they just take them over to the middle east, fly over their country and let them parachute out of the plane? Let them use WWII surplus parachutes, if they survive, it’s God’s will. If not, it’s God’s will. Either way, we would no longer be spending millions of dollars housing them and paying for their legal fees.

  7. Syria is not fighting a country or an ethnicity, it is fighting an ideology. The same ideology we fund one country and batlte in another.

  8. Why, oh why do you insist on shortening Guantanamo to ‘GITMO’ when there is no ‘i’ in it? Whats wrong with ‘GUTMO’ or ‘GATMO’ ???? Enlighten me please………………

  9. if we can’t prove that these prisoners are terrorist then send them home. Then we can get another shot at killing them on the field of battle.

  10. I don’t remember Bush ever saying that we should release any of the detainees. Not an expert, but pretty sure he is the one who set the policy of NOT letting enemy combatants back out to kill.

    • But he did release the two in this article.
Ibrahim Bin Shakaran was given to Morocco in 2004…
and Mohammed al ‘Alami in 2006

  11. “We are fighting terrorists, non-state, non-uniform belligerents who do not deserve any rights on the battlefield”

They deserve to be treated as spies and shot on the battlefield. That we’re willing to detain them is simply grace extended to the undeserving scum.

  12. I hope Bin Whatever’s enjoying the 72 virgins and rivers of wine he so delusionally believes awaits him in Paradise; this is what Mohamed told his followers if they die as martyrs for Islam. Check out that name, Sham Al Islam. It tells all that one needs to know about Islam. Islam is a sham and a scam.
