Remember when presidents stood up to Russia?

Thirty-five years ago I was finishing up my senior year of high school and heading to my first year at the University of Tennessee. Something also happened that year — the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and began the 10 year Soviet-Afghan War. If anyone had told me in 1979 that one day, 26 years later, I would be landing at the Kabul Airport in Afghanistan, I would have thought them crazy. However, history does indeed repeat itself for those who fail to learn from it.

So here we are in 2014 with a weak president, just as 35 years ago, watching another invasion. Once again we have a president who has diminished our military capacity. Once again we have a president who is limiting our energy security advancement in favor of radical environmentalists.

There are so many parallels between the tenures of presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama some postulate this is what a second Carter presidency would have resembled.

This past week, President Obama was in Europe displaying his failure to comprehend strategic level geopolitics. Europe has always been a battleground between East and West, between liberty and tyranny. The difference now is that we do not have resolute leadership such as President John F. Kennedy who went to West Berlin and stated, “Ich bin ein Berliner” meaning to say he was a citizen of Berlin (not a “Berliner” jelly-filled doughnut). And young Kennedy was indeed challenged by the brutish belligerence of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev by way of the Cuban missile crisis. Yet he stood his ground.

Years later it would be another American president, Ronald Reagan, standing at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin demanding, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” And indeed the wall did. It was Reagan who clearly defined his Cold War strategy, “We win; they lose.”

So when our current president makes weak, stumbling, incoherent statements such as, “this is not some zero-sum game” referring to Ukraine and Russia, he evidences his ignorance and cowardice to belligerents worldwide — and worse, to our allies. It is a zero-sum game and as Kennedy stated in his 1961 inaugural address:

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty. This much we pledge —- and more.

To those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. United, there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided, there is little we can do—for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder….We dare not tempt them with weakness. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed.

And so we sit back and watch history all over again as weakness becomes the enticing elixir drunk by dictators, autocrats, theocrats, and despots. There is only one way to meet evil: head on. It is not about being a “warmonger” but rather a guardian of liberty and freedom — and a guardian of the republic for which we stand.

  1. Democrats never pay attention to History, They will never learn their lessons.
All they care about is socialism, programs that keep people on the dole. Bigger government spend more and become richer while they do it. Power and wealth are their only goals for themselves while everyone else are slaves toiling to make ends meet and feeding the wealthy.
Time to end them off and put an end to this tyranny, I’ve had enough

      • It’s getting worse by the day and no one is listening to “The People”. For six years this administration does whatever it wants to and no one does a thing to stop them. What happened to the Vote they took on obama bypassing Congress and not following “Our Constitution”? I can’t believe in six years with all of our Laws, we don’t have one person that can’t take this to the Courts.

      • Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Trey Gowdy and Rand Paul. those are the ones that I know are listening, Other than them you are correct. Rand Paul is taking them to court, but what happens is anyone’s guess. May 16th when 1.8 million people descend upon Washington will be a telling event. Though I seriously doubt barry and biden will step down, I sincerely believe it will start a confrontation by the feds against the population. Though the demonstrators will not be armed, the police and park police and the DHS will be.
I think that the police or dhs will implant plain clothes agents within the crowd and will be the catalyst for trouble to start. Once that happens, I believe that the people will arm themselves and all bets are off. Just my opinion and I pray I’m wrong, but that’s how I see it.

      • I like Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Trey Gowdy and Rand Paul. Problem, none of they have any Military background that I’m aware of. My question is, who would they choose to head it up? I hope we are both wrong, but I believe like you do, something will happen. If it doesn’t, all that means they are not ready yet, which I would find hard to believe. I’m pretty sure the Patriots have a backup plan and if they don’t, they should. I bet they will all be gone, since they know in advance.

      • I know there is an organization of retired/fired generals, colonels etc that are a committee investigating Benghazi. They are in the know of what’s going on. there are plenty of them to go around and easily could be. It is all a guess from me and I really don’t want to guess

      • I didn’t know that, but I’m glad to hear it. I hope we get answers sooner than later. No, me either, but I hope May is not too late.
Do you know where to go to get all these different pictures
        to post that everyone has?

      • Check out Operation American Spring, on Facebook! Operation American Spring, set for May 16, 2014: Target WDC to take our country back from the usurper in the White House!

      • I actually pray we will some some significant “action” and by LAW of this LAND we are going to be obliged to defend it against its enemies (foreign and domestic which as we all know we have plentiful)! So help me God!
I think we need to BAN from public functions a lot of democratic bolsheviks in order to bring this Country to its core values and most importantly defend the Constitution. If we don’t there is no hope for our Country! They already started a process to dismantle the 2nd Amendment. Do you think they are going to stop on that? What will be next?

  2. And Obama tried to compare himself to John Kennedy five and a half years ago. Unfortunately, he is not another John Kennedy who actually fought a war and was seriously injured. Kennedy faced death several times before he became President. Obama has never faced war and death. He is a complete amateur compared to Kennedy.

  3. I do love your post and I find this one a breath of fresh air. As frustrating as the subject may be. I was wondering why no one points to the crisis caused on 9/11 to the fact that our previous Democratic President Mr. Clinton had drastically down sized our military?

    • And he refused to respond to the attack of the USS Cole in a timely manner because, as he stated after leaving office on the Ron Insana Show, he ‘didn’t want to start something he couldn’t finish’…It was the final assurance that Bin Laden needed that America was indeed a “Paper Tiger” unwilling to fight a prolonged war against terror…He had claimed he lacked ‘actionable intelligence on the Cole attack’ on numerous occasions…but finally admitted the truth after leaving office…Another Democratic Presidential security failure…

  4. Yes, I remember when presidents stood up to Russia. I also remember when US citizens were smart enough to pay attention and not allow a Communist in the White House.

  5. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26795627

Russia’s Vladimir Putin has telephoned President Barack Obama to discuss the US proposal for a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine.

Mr Obama suggested that Russia put a concrete response in writing, the White House said in a statement.

According to the Kremlin, Mr Putin suggested examining how the situation could be stabilised.

Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine has sparked international condemnation.

In the hour-long phone call, the US president urged Mr Putin to avoid the build-up of forces on the Russian border with Ukraine.

  6. Thank you for reminding us that we have had Presidents that stood up for America. And thank you for YOUR service to OUR country Colonel West.

  7. There have been several presidents who have tricked us into war. FDR prodded Japan into attacking Pearl Harbor and held back information from the fleet commanders on Pearl Harbor.
Here is just one article and there is even more information in Wayne Jett’s book, “The Fruits of Graft”.

  8. With this president we feel like in a sorry state. Where are the John F Kennedys and the Ronald Reagans. I hope the the next elections we will have them and the American people are smart enough to recognize them and elect them and not the Barack Obamas and the Jimmy Carters.

  9. I agree with Pres. Reagan and Rep. West, but why should we believe that Sen. Paul or Sen. Cruz or any of the libertarians in the Republican party would be any different than Pres. Obama and Pres. Carter on foreign policy?

    • I can’t imagine such a lovely person like you would write such a nonsense. Paul and Cruz are American patriots to the bone. Who tried to block “obamacare” against all others? Who had balls to do it? Who was against so called “compromises” witch democratic Bolsheviks? Republican Party has cut the branch they all sat on! They don’t deserve our votes anymore. Their betrayal is extremely bad for this country and its people.
Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are more conservative than any Boehner, McCane and all of other RINOs bunched together. If we still keep choosing the weak, the lazy and the corrupted Republicans, we will never be able to beat the Democratic scum in any election!

      • And the Tea Party is exactly at the core of American values, the Constitution and tradition. It is harder to define a REAL Republican than these two gentlemen.

  10. People, As a member of the US Army in 62 and 63 having been sent to Key West during the Cuban Missle crises , i think you ought to take another look at Kennedy’s handling of this affair ! 1. How did the Russians get those missles to Cuba without US knowing it ! In fact Kennedy knew this as far back as June! Do you really believe that a routine overflight discovered this ? Kruchev agreed to take his missles out of Cuba if! 2. We agreed to not invade Cuba ( Lost till this very Day) and the big Lie !
Mr Kruchev do not tell the American People that I agree to take our Missles out of Turkey for 10 months! Who won?

  11. Now it begins, the shove to push Jeb Bush down the throat of Republicans. The RINO’s are quick to put one more establishment candidate before the people, as an attempt to quite the masses that are begging for liberty. Listen up RNC, if he’s not Tea Party, we do not want him or her as a candidate for any office.

  12. As a people, we have collectively gotten twice as stupid as we were with the election of Mr. Peanut. We not only put into office an incompetent, BHO, but an illegitimate one at that. AND WE DID IT TWICE. There is a cure to our downfall and just like we did when we removed Carter with the election of Ronald Reagan, we can do it again and we will. That cure is Newt Gingrich and Allen West.

  13. It would take 10 Million Obama’s & 2 Million Carter’s to equal one JFK & Reagan! Never have I ever heard of a President so HELL BENT ON DESTROYING AMERICA! Obama MUST GO DOWN! I am proud to say that I NEVER vote for the SOB POS Obama!
