The rallying cry we need: Stand, Men of the West

Last night I came across an article written by Stephen M. Klugewicz from the site “The Imaginative Conservative.” It struck me right to the core because I believe it is the rallying cry we need: “Stand, Men of the West.”

This is our moment, and history will remember our actions and how we did stand.

We cannot listen to the voices of defeatism nor believe the enemy is greater than us. Our cause is a just cause — it has always been — as liberty and freedom is the moral cause of mankind.

Here in our time, the enemies of liberty, foreign and domestic, seek to subjugate us, but they shall not be victorious. Every action we take, great or small, will lead to our ultimate victory. Setbacks are only temporary and will build us towards the final end: triumph.

Mr. Klugewicz writes, our conservative tendency is to revel in the nobility of lost causes. This in itself is not a bad thing at all—quite the opposite in fact. As T.S. Eliot said: “We fight for lost causes because we know that our defeat and dismay may be the preface to our successors’ victory, though that victory itself will be temporary; we fight rather to keep something alive than in the expectation that anything will triumph.”

But we have not taken Eliot’s words to heart. We mistakenly look for permanent victories, political and cultural, and when they do not come, we despair. We seem not to realize that it is not permanent victories that we should seek but rather the preservation of “the permanent things,” which is victory enough.

We must learn the principle of incrementalism, something progressive socialists have used effectively.

I will leave it up to you to read the full commentary. But I do want to highlight these words, which as I ran this morning, just added a strength to my stride.

Mr. Klugewicz writes, “Western civilization is undeniably in decline and indeed its very existence is in doubt. Yet these thoughts ought not to drag us conservatives down into a morass of defeatism. Sadly, though, some conservatives are indeed calling for retreat. They say that the hour is too late, that a remnant must run to the barricades and shield itself and whatever is left of Western civilization from the barbarians at the gates.

Conservatives must not cede this hour to darkness and instead take to heart the words of King Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings:

A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends, and break all bonds of fellowship; but it is not this day! An hour of woe, and shattered shields, when the Age of Men comes crashing down; but it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!”

Aragon wasn’t King of Mordor, he was King of Gondor.

Man, don’t spoil the beauty of thing with technicalities. It was said or written and it is powerful.

Normally I’m not the grammar-nazi correcting type, but the difference between Mordor and Gondor within the story is so vast that it had to be said.

So it must be. 🙂

They should go to where this form of government already exists rather than try to destroy what most of us hold dear.

It is only in decline due to the attacks by the communist agenda of the last 60 years. Saul Alinsky, Bill Ayers etc. It should read rise up People of the West, why people and not just men? It takes a nation to defeat evil, not just men

Men, as in the race of men, includes wo-men, I did not feel left out. My pseudonym is male, but my heart and life is all woman. I have never felt weaker because of the strength of men. My strength, which is different from men’s, multiplies when added to theirs. If you know the Lord of the Rings, there are plenty of strong female characters, but then Tolkien and C.S. Lewis came from a time where men were strong and threw themselves into the fray, but so did their women when needed.

The_Patriot

You are not making any sense to me. My statement has nothing to do with anyone’s strength of virtue or character. It had nothing to do with women being inferior or not strong enough. You missed the point of my post entirely.
I am not in anyway politically correct, my point is in WWII the men fought the war, women were nurses and workers in assembly Plants. It took everyone to win the war against evil. It will take everyone to win this war against evil as well.

“My brothers and sisters. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of Patriots fail, when we forsake our Republic and break all bonds of Freedom, but it is not this day. An hour of Tyranny and shattered rights, when the Age of Free Men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Sons and Daughters of Liberty!” – Aragorn, if he spoke today

What’s even more interesting is that in the book, unlike the movie where the king under the mountain and his ghost army destroyed the orcs and the wicked men of the east, it was Aragorn’s fellow countrymen from the north,Rangers, the Dunedain who answered their lord’s clarion call to arms helping Aragorn and the Dead Men take over the ships, then carried on with Aragorn after the dead departed, and met on the field at the Battle of Pelennor. They were small in number, but like militia in our own Revolutionary War, answered the call and help win the day.We need… Read more »

I’m a petite pink-loving female, and, sad to say, I’m manlier than most guys these days! Count me in! Can we start by holding doors for people? Ooh, or giving up seats for pregnant women and the elderly? It’s pathetic that such things are not considered the norm in many parts of the country these days. We can follow that up with some shooting at the range, maybe archery, and then round it out by watching MMA competitions while eating meat. I don’t know if that’s what you had in mind, but that sounds like a good day to me.

More patriotic than guns and meat? Okay, how’s this – hold a sit-in in front of some liberal institution while eating meat, waving flags and listening to southern classic rock? If you pick the right location, this is a GREAT way to piss off “progressives,” who will quickly show their true colors as weak-minded power-hungry bureaucratic thugs. Just be sure to bring multiple cameras to capture their ravings in case they try to take one from you. Stay calm while they throw their hissy fits and try to intimidate you, then expose them (and sue if necessary). Works best if… Read more »

Unlike SOME… I will not retreat. I will not back down. I will not stand silently by. The current situation is unacceptable, and the course we are on cannot be sustained. STAND UP! NOW may be the most important election cycle in our lifetime, even though it is “only a midterm.” This has to end NOW.

I think it’s fair to say that the last Presidential election was stolen. Never in the history of the USA has a sitting President been re-elected when the country was in such dire straights as those we are now in. This issue now is the next election. If Obama/Soros, etc. steal the next one, Presidential term limits will be abolished and Obama will run for, and win, a third term. Think about it. Can Obama afford to let the Republicans win the Senate? If they do, he knows he’ll wind up in jail for what he’s done. He has proven… Read more »

I have news for you conservitives, us liberals are just as concerned about the way OUR country is being governed as you are!! I find it very offensive to see comments about liberals should leave or would we be willing to die for r our freedoms… I say, GIVE ME LIBERTY, or GIVE ME DEATH!! Where do you see these comments? I don’t doubt that you’ve seen them; but I just read down this thread and I haven’t seen any. I’m really not sure you know what a “Conservative” is, other than how the Progressive entity defines it for you. A Conservative seeks to “conserve” our Constitution; but I suppose you have to be willing to go back and study the early days of America. There’ve been Conservatives and Liberals from day 2. Jefferson was a Conservative and Hamilton, who wanted America to be an Aristocracy, was a Liberal. It’s funny, though, that Patrick Henry,… Read more »

Your statements are those of a classical liberal. The classical liberals espoused limited government interference in one’s life, liberty, the right to retain the fruits of one’s labor and the freedom of self determination. The modern-day liberals in the Democrat party today are progressive statists, aka communists. How can anyone that has pledged to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic align themselves with or vote for those whose admitted aim is the destruction of our Constitutional Republic for the purpose of replacing it with a European style socialist state? Did we defeat the communists in… Read more »

Exactly, Jimbolero! The Progressives are expert at co-opting terminologies. And, Toni may, indeed, be a Conservative. He does sound like a “Classical” Liberal. It is truly the greatest problem we have in America…that people do not take the time to define terms. Every American really needs to go back and study the Founding of this Republic, to know within themselves what they are, and where they stand in relation to the issues of the day.

Toni, Toni, Toni, if we, as conservatives, can see what is going on with some of the “un-American” goings on the democrats are doing, why can’t you? Surely you know they are wrong… Ignorance(to ignore) is no excuse… I am not trying to be mean to you, I, we, just want to understand why you, and others, as democrats, Do Not see what we see, and want a change…

Jane, Jane, Jane, why is it so easy to see faults of others, and so difficult to see our own? Let he or she, that is without sin cast the first stone.

Conservatives and liberals are neccessary for each other, how else could we divide the population to the point of collapse?

Jane18

Russell, if you think I am saying Republicans in Washington(and other high places) are blameless, you are wrong!! But, way down deep in your brain where common sense is(hopefully), you know the democrats are the ones that want people enslaved and dependent on the government. You do know that don’t you?

Russell Sayce

Both parties are privately owned corporations that pretend to be battling each other, and they use the distracting battle to divide the population down the middle of most homes. I have little to no respect for either dance partner. If you would like to discuss common sense….I’m listening.

Good for you, Toni! Neither conservatives nor liberals can afford to give our minds to the leaders of our chosen parties. We must think with our own minds and not be afraid to stand up to even our own party’s leaders when they are doing wrong. I guarantee you that if conservatives were doing the stuff going on in the White House now, I would be screaming to bring them down! The democratic party of today is not the democratic party of JFK. It leans dangerously left toward communism. If all Americans don’t start working together our free America may be a thing of the past. (Even the Roman Empire fell. It was, bigger, stronger and older than America.) We need to look for our common goals, not our differences. Ah, what a lovely dream.

Gay, Straight, Black, White, Conservative, Liberal, Democrat, Republican, Christian, Atheist…..Whatever “label” you proudly wear or despise, we cannot be divided at this critical time in U.S. history. We ALL have something to LOSE if the Constitution of the United States falls to the current attack on the Second Amendment. Colonel, you and I and other “dead white men” must see ourselves as the dinosaurs we are, yet continue doing the Right Thing simply because it IS right. That effort, vain as it may seem, may be the one thing that is remembered out of all this and carried on by a future generation which still longs for Freedom to do what’s right–not just “anything we want”, but what’s right. You stand as such a man, regardless of the lies and persecutions. You are an Old Western Man. God bless you.

As the saying goes, the man who will not stand for something will fall for anything. But not just anything will do. So, what are you going to stand for? How about standing for the King, His kingdom, and His law and ANYTHING opposed thereto?

Yes—Bring back “Muscular Christianity”. Without mature, moral, courageous men—there is no Civil Society possible, or Free Republic. Without Virtue, there is no Freedom (Socrates). The Leftists, bought and owned by Rockefeller elites–like Harry Fosdick (“religionless” Christianity, as Bonhoeffer called his “church”) and Sherwood Eddy, H.L. Mencken and Sinclair Lewis led the Cultural Marxists to mock masculinity, normalize evil and feminize and emasculate churches and culture (boys especially). We need male leaders and, please, get your sons out of the public schools which are designed to emasculate them, and force “group think” and ignorance, and puerile dependence, and normalize vice, to… Read more »
