The curious case of Army SGT Bowe Bergdahl

The US Military operates on a simple maxim in combat: “leave no man behind.”. However, we also don’t believe in negotiating with the enemy — especially the non-state, non-uniform Islamic terrorist enemy.

Which is why the plight of Army SGT Bowe Bergdahl presents quite the dilemma. The warrior in me says simply do as General William Tecumseh Sherman would and scorch the earth to find our brother. But naturally, the Obama administration has a different approach in mind.

As reported by the Washington Post in an effort to free American captive Bowe Bergdahl before the bulk of U.S. forces leave Afghanistan this year, the Obama administration has decided to try to resume talks with the Taliban and sweeten an offer to trade Taliban prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for the Army sergeant. Five members of the Afghan Taliban who have been held at Guantanamo for years would be released to protective custody in Qatar (Taliban representatives remain in Doha, and the office there is a de facto political headquarters) in exchange for the release of Bergdahl, who was captured in Afghanistan in 2009 and is thought to be held in Pakistan by the Haqqani network, an allied insurgent group.

To refresh the American offer, which has been on the table for more than two years, senior officials from the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department and other agencies decided within the past month to allow the simultaneous release of all five men. Taliban representatives had objected to the previous plan to release the prisoners by ones or twos as a test of Taliban and Qatari intermediaries’ ability to make sure the men did not return to militancy.

But if we do indeed we have intelligence that Bergdahl is being held in Pakistan, why haven’t the Pakistanis supported his extraction – because we certainly haven’t heard about it. I’m just a little skeptical since Osama Bin Laden was hiding in Abbottabad — the same city that houses the Pakistan Military Academy, their version of West Point — so forgive my lack of trust.

But something just seems a bit out of kilter in this whole situation. Islamic jihadists don’t generally take US troops prisoner, they execute them, often in the primitively brutal manner of ritual disemboweling and beheading.

So why has the Haqqani network held SGT Bergdahl all these years?

Pentagon press secretary, Rear Adm. John Kirby, said U.S. officials have never stopped trying to bring Bergdahl home. What exactly have we been doing since 2009, considering we have superior intelligence gathering and special operations forces. After all, thanks to the kindness of Afghan villagers, we were able to launch an extraction operation to secure former US Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell deep in Taliban territory.

There is no “actionable” intelligence on Bergdahl’s exact location, one official said, and a U.S. military rescue mission has long been effectively ruled out. The United States has even less traction with the Haqqanis, branded a terrorist group in 2012, than with the main Taliban organization. A State Department official met once with Haqqani representatives more than three years ago, but there has been no further contact, two officials said.

Even Bergdahl’s abduction is puzzling. According to the Washington Post, the Army infantryman assigned to a unit from Alaska, was taken captive after walking off his base in the eastern province of Paktika, a decision that confounded his comrades and commanders in Afghanistan. The U.S. military launched a massive manhunt, fearing it would be nearly impossible to find him if his captors smuggled him into Pakistan. The Taliban soon took credit for capturing him and offered to release him in exchange for $1 million and 21 Afghan prisoners.

I spent two and a half years in Afghanistan and an American Soldier doesn’t just walk off a Forward Operating Base (FOB) or anywhere alone. It was SOP even in Kabul that you never went anywhere without a battle buddy. Furthermore, leaving the installation required signing out with destination, time of departure and estimated time of return.

Of course I want Army SGT Bowe Bergdahl back home, but do I want America to negotiate with terrorists and legitimize them? Hell no!

I recall the actions taken in Mogadishu to ensure not one American was left behind. I remember the heroic actions of Army Delta Snipers MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shugart to secure downed Army “Nightstalker” pilot CW3 Michael Durant. They gave their lives to secure the life of one of their own.

I’m quite sure we have warriors willing to do the same for SGT Bowe Bergdahl, but do we have the resolve in civilian leadership? President Obama wants to clear out GITMO but this is not how it should be done. If we do release these jihadists from GITMO, or Haqqani network prisoners in Afghanistan, they should have tracking devices to preclude recidivism. But then again, “what difference at this time does it make?” Karzai just released 66 Islamic terrorists, so what’s the big deal with another five?

Sorry, but I’d prefer kicking these jackasses back into the 7th century – but I guess I’m just hard-wired that way.

  1. Click-Click, Colonel. Some buzz in back-channel milvet nets suggest that the good Sgt. might not be a POW at all. But agreed, we want him back in one piece, if for no better reason than to answer quite a few questions. Beyond that, no negotiating with beheaders. Islam delenda est.

    • My thoughts exactly. There’s a reason why he walked off the base alone and without properly signing out. If we make the exchange, whose to say that when he arrives home it will be nothing more than a body bag, or an IUD rigged body.

  2. It sure would be nice if you would attach yourself to Sarah Palin and run for President of these United States. We need strong leadership that wont back down from a fight!!!

  3. Closest thing we should be doing to negotiation is “give our man back or your tribal region will be a sheet of glass” Why are we allowing these animals to bully us? I’ll tell you why our POTUS is their grand poobah. Rand Paul and Allen West in 2016!! We need hope and change that is actually good for America.

  4. Are u kidding me? You’re saying that the man we tried to free for the exchange of five (5) GITMO detainees is STILL being held against his will in Pakistan?? I say bypass Obama who is unimportant and immaterial to the need of a functioning military and have a five (5) man panel in Congress institute legislative orders to the Joint chiefs of staff to bomb Qatar continuously, 24/7 until this man is released.

  5. With the “Obama Generals” in place, there is no telling what these idiots will do. When Paul Ryan took retirement benefits from Veterans, those back stabbing Obama puppets said we needed to do this, only because they’re over 62 and it wouldn’t effect them.

    • Why did you not include Patty Murray with Ryan when you say that about retirement benefits? It was both of them. Looks like the vets will be getting them back though, and that is good.

      • Because I expect that Hag to ravish the Military even though Wa. has two AFB’s one of the biggest Army bases and Naval Stations all over! I didn’t expect Ryan to screw over Veterans! The simple fact that BOTH of them went after Veterans retirement instead of fraud, waste and abuse speaks volumes for them! You think any Veteran in his right mind would vote for Ryan now? I can only imagine what he’ll do as President!

    • And ‘the younger ones will get $17k a year which is ‘better than welfare’ because that’s all they would qualify for outside the military – we made a big mistake recruiting one of them…’ Direct quote from the ‘Lavender Lieutenant.’

  6. The official reports say that Sgt. Bergdahl was abducted from the base in a White Van. He was last seen going to the latrine where he was taken. Hostage survival training that I underwent in my time of service was stay alive and keep faith with your fellow hostages/POWs. Sgt. Bergdahl’s mental condition is not up for scrutiny. He has been in enemy hands and abandoned. If he is tilting to a prayer rug 5 times a day.. fine. If he broke any laws or codes of conduct.. then he belongs to us.. We ll deal with him not leave him to them. I give him the benefit of the doubt and would go get him. His captors are reading these blogs to him and tell him..why would you want to fight for them or go home to these ungrateful Americans.

    • The trouble arises when the “official reports” say one thing and some of his fellow Troops tell it differently. I used to be only a skeptic when it came to believing the “official report” from this Administration, but they have turned me into a hardass cynic. Still, Bergdahl is OURS and the fact that he hasn’t been retrieved by force by now is unconscionable.

  7. I long for a Leader like Col West to be part of a Leadership Team in a future Conservative Administration

    May it be so

    DEO VOLENTE

  8. (Disqus works so nice today.) You need proof he is there. Then go get him. F. collateral damage. I am sick of all this namby pamby fake diplomacy/bureaucracy. But then there’s Benghazi, isn’t there?

  9. And that is why WE LOVE YOU!!! I really wish YOU were president so we could go get him and these countries would respect us again!!! They do not respect weakness.

  10. I also wonder if this might be a case of “not letting a good crisis go to waste.” I mean, what a better test case than him for chipping deployed troops so we can find them should they become missing… (or track them if they go to a place that’s off limits for military personnel, etc). I think it is coming and it will be the military, babies and the elderly first… of course, all in the name of safety.

    • I am all for low jacking violent jihads,I think it should start with whoever we trade for this solider. Chip’ em, and turn em loose, let the rat return to his nest. Follow him back.

Who knows with our technology we might have already employed this strategy.

  11. He did WALK OFF and was at a VSP and no one “signs in/out” at a VSP only FOBBITS do that.
Here is what I have found from a fellow soldier that was there…..

“I WAS THERE. I’m sick of all the lies. Here is the TRUTH, from someone on the
ground. We were at OP Mest, Paktika Province, Afghanistan. It was a small
outpost where B Co 1-501st INF (Airbone) ran operations out of, just an
Infantry platoon and ANA counterparts there. The place was an Afghan graveyard.
Bergdahl had been acting a little strange, telling people he wanted to
“walk the earth” and kept a little journal talking about how he was
meant for better things. No one thought anything about it. He was a little “out
there”. Next morning he’s gone. We search everywhere, and can’t find him. He
left his weapon, his kit, and other sensitive items. He only took some water, a
compass and a knife. We find some afghan kids shortly after who saw an american
walking north asking about where the taliban are. We get hits on our voice
intercepter that Taliban has him, and we were close. We come to realize that
the kid deserted his post, snuck out of camp and sought out Taliban… to join
them. We were in a defensive position at OP Mest, where your focus is to keep
people out. He knew where the blind spots were to slip out and that’s what he
did. It was supposed to be a 4-day mission but turned into several months of
active searching. Everyone was spun up to find this guy. News outlets all over
the country were putting out false information. It was hard to see, especially
when we knew the truth about what happened and we lost good men trying to find
him. PFC Matthew Michael Martinek, Staff Sgt. Kurt Robert Curtiss, SSG Clayton
Bowen, PFC Morris Walker, SSG Michael Murphrey, 2LT Darryn Andrews, were all
KIA from our unit who died looking for Bergdahl. Many others from various units
were wounded or killed while actively looking for Bergdahl. Fighting Increased.
IEDs and enemy ambushes increased. The Taliban knew that we were looking for
him in high numbers and our movements were predictable. Because of Bergdahl,
more men were out in danger, and more attacks on friendly camps and positions
were conducted while we were out looking for him. His actions impacted the
region more than anyone wants to admit. There is also no way to know what he
told the Taliban: Our movements, locations, tactics, weak points on vehicles
and other things for the enemy to exploit are just a few possibilities. The
Government knows full well that he deserted. It looks bad and is a good
propaganda piece for the Taliban. They refuse to acknowledge it. Hell they even
promoted him to Sergeant which makes me sick. I feel for his family who only
want their son/brother back. They don’t know the truth, or refuse to
acknowledge it as well. What he did affected his family and his whole town back
home, who don’t know the truth. Either way what matters is that good men died
because of him. He has been lying on all those Taliban videos about everything
since his “capture”. If he ever returns, he should be tried under the UCMJ for
being a deserter and judged for what he did. Bergdahl is not a hero, he is not
a soldier or an Infantryman. He failed his brothers. Now, sons and daughters
are growing up without their fathers who died for him and he will have to face
    that truth someday.”

I hope the truth comes out “if” he is returned and then put on trial for his crimes!

    Sergeant Major, US Army, Retired

    • Thank you for this account. Of course we knew nothing about what you have revealed to us. I’m sure his release will be garnered just in time for the 2014 elections. I’m so sick of the deception and lies. We are living in times of Universal Deceit and Cowardice. Thank you Sergeant Major for your sacrifice and service to our now unworthy country.

    • Well there it is Col. West, folks. Sounds like the Sergeant Major has the real skinny on the Bergdahl guy. In this case, I tell the Taliban to keep him. We lost six good men because some “dinky dau” soldier wanted to “walk the Earth?” This is one situation where I think it’s okay to “leave one of our own behind.”

    • Thank you for this detailed account Sgt. Major, I was just down the road in Sharana a week or two after this jack ass walked off his post. All the information I received at that time was just as described above. He put thousands of ISAF at risk along with the Brothers you lost looking for him . Searching for him also interrupted, postponed or cancelled hundreds of missions. I also want him returned to face charges of desertion. Semper FI.

    • Well, this just explained why Barry wants to get him back. He is one of HIS own! He can get his own free from GITMO while getting one back into the states to roam it freely.

    • Interesting, Sergeant Major. As soon as I saw his photo I was reminded of a young man, could even be the same, but with a blonde beard. He was at 60th street and Lexington which is reportedly a ‘moslem’ hub, where the taxi drivers change shifts, and the newsagent is the ‘go to’ guy for information on all things islamic. (2007, perhaps) The young Bergdahl look alike seemed a bit hyper and piqued my curiousity when he was asking for instructions on how to get to a certain place in Afghanistan without using official routes. At the time I wondered if he were CIA or just a crazy kid who didn’t know what he was getting into. I was suddenly Very Interested in the magazines, and the kid gave up. Well ‘kid’ seemed to be in early twenties. Wonder if he found his way to Afghanistan via the US military. Very sad all round. Thank you for your service.

  12. Chip everyone of those so called men and track them and everyone of their buddies! Something off about this but if we can turn 5 into 500 under the sand then all the better! Sad part this will bite us somehow with the way this leadership prefers them to us.

  13. West is totally correct about the 7th century part. Sharia “Law” would put us all backwards to 7th century dark ages if radical Muslims ever got their way and Americans were forced to live under Sharia “Law”.

    • Did you know that there are 23 muslim communities that practice sharia law in the USA ? Why is this allowed? Why do we let this happen? They are no more then training camps for future terrorists. They even have started including women in their training! This is a dangerous precedent for us to ignore!

  14. I have read the Quran an never found any reference to sharia law. Conservative Christians have more in common with Islamic Extremists then other Christian denominations. Both groups have used violence to further their religious believes . Both demand that everyone convert to their religion’s dogma. Both consider women to be a lessor . That should be subservient an good only for procreation . Both groups also act in direct conflict to the teachings of the faith they claim.

    • Allen, your ignorance of Conservative Christianity is overwhelming. Exactly how many people have conservative Christians killed in the last 50 years? Compare that to the hundreds of thousands killed by Islam. Christians demand you convert? Been held at sword point lately? In on overwhelmingly Christian country, you’ve probably barely been invited to join, let alone had anyone demand you start praying daily.
As a conservative Christian woman, I can guarantee no one considers me a lessor than my husband or demand that I should be subservient and pregnant. LOL Rather I am to give my husband respect because he is expected to love me to the point of dying for me.
And we don’t act in conflict to the teachings of our faith…amazingly enough, in a free country where the knowledge is available to all, most non-Christians and a lot of those that claim that label actually don’t understand the teachings of Christ. It’s a crying shame that you are just normally ignorant instead of your ignorance being a rarity.

      • Let’s start in the 70’s bombing of women’s clinics. The murder of Doctors that performed legal abortions. Including just a couple years ago . Shooting a Kansas Doctor in church during services. The Oklahoma City Bombing was by self proclaimed conservative Christians both where 7th day . An members of groups such as the KKK an White Supremacy as well Neo Nazi party all claim they practice conservative Christianity . While the conservative Christians in Government make statements like Marco Rubio that claims rape is simply another form of procreation . An the (R) Gov. Of MS. Claiming women are at fault for the failures of the Education System as well as the decline in traditional family’s. That because women went on to higher education as well as jobs. When they should have stayed at home submitted to their husbands an repeat demands.

      • Give it up Allen. Your views are twisted, TOTALLY out of context and yes, ignorant. Anyone can kill anyone and say it is for Christ or Allah. But here is the important point your feeble mind cannot comprehend. The true leaders of the Christian faith do not and have not INSTRUCTED anyone to kill in the name of Christ. But the leaders of Islam, the Imam’s, encourage, instruct, and take part in the killings of Christians and any INFIDEL. Infidel means anyone who does not take up Islamic religion. Please show me in the New Testament, where Christ tells anyone to literally kill anyone that doesn’t follow him. You said you’ve read the Quran. Doubtful. Because if you did, you will see many passages that calls for the killing of infidels. Do us a favor. Shut your mouth. Educate yourself, and then join the conversation with the adults.

      • The 700 club preacher pat has often called for the deaths of gays an Muslims. Oral Roberts has said atheists don’t deserve to live. The Quran does teach of tolerance of other religions so long as they do also. An check your History . For almost 300 years that Jerusalem was under Muslim control. They allowed Jews an Christians to live there an practice their faith. It was Christians of the first Crusade that killed everyone when they took the city. Muslim ,Jews an Christians men, women an Children . The oldest Christian churches in the world are in Egypt, Lebanon an Turkey all Muslim nations.an any Imam that advocates suicide bombers. Is going against the Quran . The Quran teaches that taking of even one innocent life is forbidden . Just as there are those that claimed to be Christians said slavery was Gods will. Or the Lutheran an Catholic’s that supported Hitler’s actions against the Jews. The Book of Ezekiel calls for stoning to death anyone that works on the Sabbath . As well as stoning to death an insolent child. All three of the major religions have violence in their past . It says in the King James Bible IN MATTERS OF THE CHURCH LET THY WOMEN BE SILENT. As well that if anyone claims to know when the end of times is near are false phrophets. . For not even the Son knows only the Father. How many Christian leaders currently claim that the end of all times draws near.

      • If the Quran teaches that taking of even one innocent life is forbidden, what changed? Better yet, who rewrote the Quran?

      • The Catholic church was the FIRST ‘Institution’ in the entire world to formally educate girls, to allow women to run their own schools, hospitals, universities, etc., etc., Benedictine Saint Scholastica brought the first PRINTING PRESS to Italy, etc.

As for abortion – which gender is most likely to be BUTCHERED – because that’s what abortion is, the SADISTIC BUTCHERY OF HELPLESS HUMAN INFANTS. Yes, you got it – FEMALES are the FIRST AND DOMINANT CASUALTIES OF ABORTION. Males have five times the infant mortality rate of females, so no great need for the GENOCIDERS to murder them.

As for your Queeran here’s a Sura for you: ‘9.11 – You shall strike terror into the heart of the infidel.’ Got that far yet? And where are the moslems crying out against the slaughter of Christians across the Middle East, Europe and Africa?

      • Again Allen, Educate yourself in reality and stop spewing forth your tired old anti-Christian, false talking points that I’ve heard a million times from people much smarter than you that I’ve proven wrong. They just won’t admit it. You obviously must have read a completely different Quran than the one I’ve studied. Islam also teaches, and encourages to “form your lips to speak untruths to the infidel to bring comfort to their sense of peace before you separate their head from body.” To Mohammed, an infidel is lower than the desert dog. You obviously don’t know a thing about the Bible. You attempted to quote a reading from the “King James” Bible and even got that incorrect. You are attempting to quote The Old Testament. Christians follow The New Testament which is why I said “New Testament” in my original comment. That’s why Jesus was such a threat to the Pharisees and Scribes of the day. Because he taught a New Testament. I see I’m dealing with just another uneducated, close minded and stubborn moron in you. So, good day and good riddance. And yes, even Christians get frustrated with dealing with idiots and are compelled to speak low of the lowly. That’s something I seem to have to pray about more and more lately.

      • Check your History Books Pope Urban II did . An Pat Robertson of the 700 Club advocated the use of nuclear weapons to wipe out all Muslim countries as well he wanted Israel nuked . He said that It would prove to them all they worshiped a false God. An the killing of infidels you refer to does not mean anyone not of Islam. It means those who practice religions or occultist things as fortune telling an such. It also apply’s to anyone that has committed violence against Muslims or insulted their religion. Muslims believe that Christ was a Profit of God an that he was born pure of sin. An that both faiths can live in peace. But they really do have a dislike for Jews.

      • Islam teaches violence, slaughter, and oppression. Jesus Christ did not. When the Methodists start hijacking airliners and blowing up buildings while shouting “Jesus Is Lord”, then we’ll talk.

      • Allen, MANY evil folks claim their evil deeds are done in the name of God–including a lot of religions (which are all Man-made, have their own beliefs & by-laws, and do not necessarily follow the teachings of the Bible). The Roman Catholic Church’s various Inquisitions in the Dark Ages (using torture to encourage Christians, Jews, and other faiths, to convert to Catholicism or die) which murdered over 50 million innocent people between 1205 and 1605.

Bear in mind, though, Allen: “Conservative Christians” is NOT a religion. Any real Christian, who follows Christ, and obeys His Commands via prayer, reading the Bible, and engaging in a personal relationship with Him; would OF COURSE harbor Christ’s own worldview–which, oddly enough, happens to coincide with the Conservative worldview. Just a coincidence.

You, Allen, have no knowledge of Christianity, nor the Bible, because, if you did, you would KNOW that real Christians are taught by God’s Word to love others as they do themselves; and to pray for their enemies. They are NOT taught to pay evil for evil, nor commit any kind of violence toward anyone.

By the way, I would feel extremely cruel to you if I did not at least help you gain true knowledge of Islam and all the writings associated with their ideology (it’s not truly a religion, but more of a political ideology). Here are some links for you to peruse. Happy learning!

      • I am a cradle Catholic an have studied many of the religions practiced around the world. I also have BS in World History as well a BS in American History from St. Louis University. You have selected to ignore things like the Spanish Inquisition. Or Pope Urban II who declared a holly war on Muslims an Jews . They would be converted or they would be put to the sword . Stating that God Wills It ! Or the actions of the U.S. In regards to Native Americans . An what they where put through at the Carlyle School. An it was preachers that used the Bible as justification for slavery . As well as denying women rights. I am not saying every Christian is bad but neither is every Muslim or Jew. An personally if you look at the life a devote Buddhist practice’s it is how a Disciple of Christ should strive for. Since so many lump all Muslims into a very small minority of Radicals. I did the same with Christians. As an example of those that would blame everyone for the actions of a few. Just as I have had individuals that assumed they knew what the Catholic Faith was like because they saw a few Mafia movies.

      • Allen, for all your claims to being supposedly “educated,” you failed to read, or maybe understand, my FIRST paragraph, where I MENTIONED RCC’s VARIOUS Inquisitions (their evil went BEYOND Spain, to France, and even England), so you can hush on that.

By the way, if you DID go to college, then WHY is your grammar so terrible? And, why don’t you ever use a ‘d’ at the end of your “an”s? You must have smoked a heck of a lot of weed in college to have failed so abjectly even to learn the English language. Can’t say I have any faith you learned anything else while wasting your parent’s money on college.

And, you’re admitting to being a religionist–a member of one of the most violent religions, to boot! To still be SO ignorant of what is in the Bible clearly demonstrates your lack of faith in Jesus, for that Book is full of His Word. No wonder you love Islam–it’s just as bloody as Catholicism.

Seems you’ve been summed up in just a few paragraphs, Allen. I hope you come to a point in your life where you call out to Jesus, and ask Him to lead you to His Truth. Christ is the only One who help you the way you need it.

        I’ve prayed for you.

      • Wow Catherine, get over yourself. Doesn’t that bag of turds you carry around masquerading as intelligence get heavy?

      • Is that all you have??? Not enough IQ points to formulate even a halfway intelligent statement? Don’t have the vocabulary to rise above the 4th-grade? Really? You have nothing to contribute, and should return to your classroom, kid. Your teacher’s looking for you.

    • You don’t know anything about Christians. We don’t demand anything sir. We don’t cut peoples heads off or pour acid on women. So you need to try again.

    • Get your head out of your A#$ and think about what you just said. I have never tried to force anybody to be a Christian and I have never been treated any different then anyone else. You wll be happy to know that I have SEVEN children and I was never forced or coerced to have them!! So everything you have said is BS. You must be a very unsettled and unhappy and dissatisfied person. God Bless and Help You!!! You seem to need a lot of it.

  15. We live in a world of super technology. They put tracking devices in all kinds of wildlife. Why not use this same technology in GITMO detainees and then release them? I am so sick of this administrations shifty way of dealing with the enemy that I could scream and there seems to be nothing that our country and it’s citizens can do to stop this craziness. What do we need to do? Our opinions are being printed and spoken daily to no avail. I can no longer blame it on one party or the other, seems to be that none of them can be trusted. All are there to line their own pockets and not to serve and protect our country.

  16. Mr. West, I have been following you for several months and honestly feel that YOU should be on the next ballot for president. AMEN! Our country needs a good man to lead it.

    • I agree Mary & I think Ted Nugent as vice Pres. that would be a great day to see. unless Your Our Enemy. than You better run & hide

  17. As a Rolling Thunder member – I have to agree – I feel for the parents for SGT Bowe Bergdahl and applaud that we can finally see the light at the end of this long awaited tunnel.

The five Taliban ‘detainees’ at the heart of the proposal are the most senior
Afghans still held at the prison at the U.S. base in Cuba. America should have tried them and taken action THEN.. If so – there wouldn’t have been 5 ‘detainees’ to negotiate with..

Let’s get this soldier home – and stop blaming HIM or our countries and politicians blunders.and while you are at it – stop kicking HIM – he can not defend himself.. Once he is on American’s soil – then treat him as a free man…

  18. I was in the same unit as “SGT” Bowe Bergdahl. You all have the story very misunderstood. The soldiers in the unit could clarify however they were forced to sign sworn statement not to talk about anything regarding the case.

    • It seems like every time you turn around, our Administration is forcing our Military and Civilians to sign sworn statements. Makes you wonder what they are hiding.

      • it is pretty much a standard thing. I signed the same statement when I left Vietnam. It is very hard, if not impossible, to enforce once all of your military obligation is over.

      • We have also signed them in the Federal Government. I don’t have a problem with it, until it’s used for a cover-up and they expect you to lie.

      • Public record according to wiki leaks the day Bowe was captured. Enemy radio traffic said that he was abducted while relieving himself. People keep saying “base” he was on a hilltop with 4 or 5 guys, total of the unit was less than 25. I don’t think anyone except those that were there, including Bowe know the real story.

    • “SGT” really? He’s been held captive and obviously hasn’t spilled his guts and told these scum everything they want to know, pretty sure he deserves the title of sgt.

  19. I have been an advocate for Bowe Bergdahl for several years and while JeffandBrenda Howard’s account is interesting, it is not his own.. He states from the start it’s what he was told by someone else. That is always the case, the people that claim Bowe was less than honorable are always “repeating” some other person’s first hand account. So where are these men that served with Bowe? It’s been over four years so I’m sure that some of them are no longer serving.

Here’s the truth – Not one person alive except Bowe himself know the details of the events on 6/30/09. He is an American who volunteered to defend this country. He is currently in enemy hands. He deserves the chance to tell his side of the story and we as Americans should hold judgement until he has had the opportunity.

Bring Bowe home because we are leaving Afghanistan and because he is ours.. sort the rest out if there is a need, but don’t leave him there because someone told someone else that he walked off. That’s not our way.

    • You’re exactly right!!! Unless you saw it with your own eyes and heard it with your own ears, don’t assume anything. As good as our Military is we should have found him by now.
Let’s make a deal! Pull out our Military and equipment. You have 24 hours to return all Americans you are holding, or we will start bombing the hell out of you.

    • “Not one person alive except Bowe himself know the details of the events on 6/30/09”

Nonsense. The facts and details are well known. There was a lengthy investigation, and sworn statements were taken from everyone who had any contact with Bergdahl in the weeks and months leading up to his desertion. There is no question what-so-ever that he voluntarily left his post. There is no question what-so-ever that he did so with the help of Afghans he had befriended. There is no question what-so-ever that he wrote emails to his family stating that he was “ashamed to be an American” in the days prior to his desertion. This isn’t a case of “”repeating” some other person’s first hand account.”; these are the facts, and whether you like it or not, Bergdahl’s actions were dishonorable and have caused the deaths of men that didn’t desert their posts when tasked with searching for him. Yes, we should bring him home, if only to put him on trial for desertion before sentencing him to a lifetime in Leavenworth.

  20. I have heard rumored that the Benghazi plan was to abduct Ambassador Stevens then negotiate for his release ….trading “The blind sheik” for Stevens…BUT it went horribly wrong and Stevens was killed…Could it be that they now are switching to trading Bowe for the Blind Sheik???? Just a thought….

    • They will never get the “Blind Sheik.’ He has been duly tried, convicted and sentenced and is serving time in the Federal pen. (I hope I don’t have to eat my words!)
But the prisoners at ‘Gitmo are a different story. They can be easily released in a swap.

  21. This was sent to me from a friend:

    Leaders? Where are they?

For years, the late Col. David H. Hackworth warned about self-serving, porcelain princes in leadership positions not acting as leaders, but as political hacks seeking only to enhance their own career. Leadership, at best, is granted lip service but rarely practiced in the rarefied air of the military hierarchy. After all, one public faux pas can be a career ender. If Patton were around today, he would have been purged at once from the U.S. Army by its porcelain princes.

Billy and Karen Vaughn, Gold Star parents of Special Operations Chief (SEAL) Aaron Vaughn, wrote “Truth is, America’s military has always had plenty of ‘good men.’ What it seems to lack in spades is good leaders.” The Vaughns used Robert Gates’ book, Duty, to confirm their suspicions that Mr. Obama sent men and women into a war with a mission he doesn’t believe in. Neither Obama the “leader,” nor many who served under him in the Department of Defense, have any desire to support front line troops. And they also have no strategy to win the war.

This nation’s number one public housing community organizer is indifferent to foreign policy, to paraphrase Bill O’Reilly’s post-Obama interview comment. Obama only cares about social justice. Accusing the current administration of not caring about front-line warriors is hardly a stretch, given that Obama’s only concern about the military has been the plight of homosexuals. He was totally indifferent about the Benghazi murders because the situation existed outside of his “social justice” paradigm.

    Rules of Engagement

The champion of social justice and his acolytes created new Rules of Engagement (ROE), which restrict American troops from directly engaging the enemy. In Obama’s world of social justice, giving a life and death advantage to an enemy in combat is considered fairness. The current rules greatly restrict the soldier’s ability to fight a
war by totally eliminating the discretion of troops in harms way. If a warrior violates the ROE, they will be court-martialed by REMF Lawyers seeking to greatly improve their performance evaluations and maybe even receive a medal for aggressive prosecution. This creates a hopeless situation for the troops who are serving this country. To quote former JAG Ken Walsh, “it’s Political Correctness driving this train.”

The current leadership is not interested in winning this war. But even more shocking is the fact that no one in a leadership position will tell the Kenyan Muslim that his policy is wrong! No one in this Administration is interested in defeating terrorism. It isn’t social justice! Social Justice to this lot is the desire to use and to sacrifice the U.S. Armed forces in order to provide cover for radical Muslims that might take over the Middle East.

  22. ” I’d prefer kicking these jackasses back into the 7th century.”
Wouldn’t phase them. They never left the 7th century! LOL
But I agree with the ass kicking part. That is the only thing they understand.

  23. War is not war like all the other wars. We are puppets for the new world order and the Muslim slime running our White House. It is too late to get him out because there are many more there to take his place. A bloody battle is going to happen soon so the dictator can dictate 100%. Get armed and get ready.

  24. As I stated on Facebook I could tell you stories about this guy he was in my battalion he walked off the COP with 3 bottles of water and a pocket knife. We had to sign papers that stated we couldn’t talk about it back at the time of the initial investigation we couldn’t say a word right after getting back from Afghanistan about it. We spent months looking for this guy, I know several people injured and a few died because of this douchebag! It was a huge scandal, no soldier was aloud to talk about it because brass didn’t want the media depicting the truth. The Government had its fingers all in it another reason why I got out 2 years later.

  25. Bowe Bergdahl is no “hero”. Here are the facts: In the weeks leading up to his “capture”, Bergdahl made statements that he was “ashamed to be an American” and “The horror that is america is disgusting.” He shipped his personal belongings home. He asked his Squad Leader what would happen if he took someone else’s weapon and other sensitive items off base.

On the day of his departure, he was drinking with the Afghans he had befriended. After being caught, he was verbally reprimanded. That evening, angry after being reprimanded, he left behind his weapons, took a knife (by some statements up to five knives), some bottled water, and hid in the back of a vehicle owned by one of the local laborers. Bergdahl and at least two Afghans then drove off base to go smoke hashish, according to multiple statements. After smoking hashish, Bergdahl then walked off into the countryside. By some accounts, he set off to go “find himself” in the mountains. By other accounts, his plan was to walk to Pakistan.

He was discovered missing the next morning at about 0900. By 1200 that day, the entire war in Afghanistan had ground to a halt as all available air assets in Afghanistan were diverted to search for Bergdahl.

In the end assessment, the acts of this “soldier” cost the lives of other Americans (ones that didn’t leave their posts in combat), and cost us hundreds of millions of dollars due to his selfish, dishonorable acts. He is a deserter, EVERYBODY in the Chain of Command knows it, and the fact that the US Government continues to pay and promote him shows the lengths they will go to manipulate public opinion.

Now, some of you will insist that we make every effort to rescue this deserter, that we will “leave no man behind”. Ask yourself: Knowing the facts, would you send your son or daughter to rescue him? If not, why should someone else’s son or daughter, husband or wife, brother or sister, risk their lives to rescue someone who intentionally left their post in a time of war and deserted? Ask yourself why there is no official statement as to the circumstances of his capture? I anticipate a sudden “deal” being made just before the mid-term elections, with Bowe returning to a hero’s welcome, and a White House dinner with the Dali Bama.

    • I have been reading similar stories too. He at best is an idiot and at worst a traitor. I vote for something in between. If we negotiated his release so he could face a firing squad then I understand otherwise this is more ignorance from a grossly inadequate White House.

  26. In MHO Col. West is the most capable human on the planet to ask (and answer!) the questions he has raised!
I am awaiting more info but after reading thru the comments below I’m beginning to suspect the soldier and, no surprise, the administration of foul play.
Another day, another s—load of disgust for our current leadership!

  27. The TV press commentators on FOX claimed (five times in 1 broadcast)
that Bergdahl’s TEARS were from the fact he was blindfolded. HE WAS NOT
BLINDFOLDED – the effing tears were from his SADNESS at leaving his
friends. He was NOT their prisoner – he was their collaborator !!!
