Betrayed: The shocking true story of Extortion 17

If you’ve seen the recent big screen stories of US Navy SEALS in Afghanistan, in Lone Survivor and Zero Dark Thirty, you are no doubt struck by the sacrifices these elite warriors make on the modern battlefield and the impeccable examples of heroism these movies have portrayed — not propaganda but truth.

However, there is another US Navy SEAL story from Afghanistan that’s not receiving much attention, simply because its truth is an indictment of failure on the part of the Obama administration, US Congress, and senior military leadership.

It is the story of the fate that befell a CH-47D helicopter, call sign Extortion 17.

Back on August 6, 2011, six months after Navy SEALs had terminated Osama Bin Laden, America suffered the single largest one-day loss of life in the ten year combat operation in Afghanistan. It was also the largest loss of Navy Special Warfare life in their history.

The mission that fateful evening entailed US Army Rangers going into the Tangi River valley in Wardak Province in Afghanistan after Taliban leader Qari Tahir.

As the Rangers landed and executed their mission, the Aerial Weapons Team (AWT) in two US Army AH-64 Apache attack helicopters observed two individuals fleeing, but permission to engage with 30mm guns was denied.

The AWT then observed these two individuals, who they assessed to be armed, link up with six others who took up positions near the proposed helicopter landing zone (HLZ) that would be used later. Again, permission to engage was denied.

Back at the Forward Operating Base, the decision was made to launch the Quick Reaction Force (QRF). But just before takeoff, seven Afghan Commandos who were listed on the manifest to accompany the mission were switched out, and the new Afghans were not manifested.

The QRF loaded onto a CH-47D Chinook aircraft headed into a hot HLZ zone where combat operations had been raging for some three hours. The lumbering CH-47D is slow and possesses less maneuver capability than the normal special operations MH-47 aircraft.

Unescorted, the CH-47D made its way to the area of operations in the Tangi River valley, a Taliban stronghold. Because of the rules of engagement, no pre-assault fires were approved on the HLZ and there were no “eyes on” the HLZ to support the QRF infiltration.

It was easy pickings for the enemy. From a prepared firing position atop a building, they launched three rocket-propelled grenades. One hit the CH-47D’s tail rotor blade and in approximately 5 seconds it broke up into three pieces and crashed into a dry creek bed in a ball of flames.

The AWT had eyes on the point of origin of the RPG shots but the AH-64s were denied approval to engage the enemy — who were seen handing down equipment and fleeing the area.

I recommend you all pick up a copy of the book, Betrayed: The Shocking True Story of Extortion 17 as told by a Navy SEAL’s father by Billy Vaughn. Billy and Karen Vaughn live just north of me in Stuart, Florida, and I came to know them as they reached out to me while I served in Congress on this matter.

I know the story in detail because I received the classified briefing on the incident. In Billy’s book, you feel his pride in his son and the moment when he learned of his son’s death. You share the emotional strain of the family as they deal with the loss of Aaron.

But you also share the anguish of a father who learns he has been lied to as he uncovers the truth. You’ll read the declassified documents and investigation report that Billy had to read to learn the massive cover-up surrounding the death of these brave men, including his only son.

I’m sure you remember President Obama’s May 2011 speech after the killing of bin Laden, but there was no speech after Extortion 17. Billy and Karen Vaughn lost their 30-year-old SEAL Team VI son, Aaron Vaughn in that helicopter shoot down. Along with Aaron there were 16 US Navy SEAL Team VI members, five US Navy SEAL Team support members and one working dog, five US Army and Army National Guard flight crewmembers, three US Air Force members of the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, seven unidentified Afghan Commandos, and one Afghan interpreter.

What is so appalling is the lack of concern from the Obama administration, Congress, and the military to lift the curtain of deceit. As well, you come to realize media hypocrisy is hiding this incident from the American people.

If this were the Bush administration, the story would have been all over the New York Times, Washington Post, and every single liberal media outlet — not that’s not the case. Remember Cindy Sheehan and attention she got? Then why are Billy and Karen Vaughn shunned?

Betrayed is a must read, you will not put the book down. It is a book that MUST be made into a film, albeit controversial. It should be mailed to President Obama, Vice President Biden, Speaker Boehner, Senator Reid, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi with one simple question, “Where is the truth for the Vaughns and all the families who lost their loved ones?” It is a book that should shame the media for not covering this dark moment in US Military history.

Never should our warriors and their families be treated in this manner. Never again should they be Betrayed

It is our military’s job to arrest traitors foreign and domestic. They have failed in their jobs that is why we have criminals in DC. They need to fix it before they no longer exist and the illegal UN forces take over or the illegal DHS. It has always been military’s job to protect our sovereignty. Bush you screwed this country.

MY Gosh—How did Bush get in on this??—This is Obama loud & clear folks–He is getting rid of all that will be against him when he gets ready to take his seat as the golfing/vacationing dictator—whoever is behind him will be in the Oval office

WOW! So much wrong in this post. Then you top it off with “it’s Bush’s fault…!”

I’ll just focus on this. The military’s job is to DEFEND our country, not to arrest folks for crimes. Those actions belong to our law enforcement agencies which have been hijacked by liberals and who see no wrong in what Obama and company are doing.

Obama and Bush are at fault. There should never have been a DHS. It was military’s job to protect our borders. They take the oath to defend our nation against foreign and domestic enemies. And bush should have exiled all Muslims after 9/11 as enemies of our nation. There was nothing wrong with my statements. The truth hurts and our nation is in severe danger because of these failures. We’ve paid out a lot of wages and nobody has done their jobs to secure our borders or protect our sovereignty and heritage. And we have a lot of traitors in… Read more »

I agree the DHS is being abused currently, but when it first came to being it was to attempt to fill the cracks after 9/11 and make all the intelligence agencies talk to one another.
I also wish the military was allowed to be used to secure the borders, but I don’t believe by law they are. Which to me makes zero sense as I pulled border duty in Germany and have had friends that did the same in Korea.

A quick 5 minute look (I’m sure there is more) shows that about 232 Million deaths are attributable to Christianity. Now, I completely understand that that isn’t what real Christians are about. My point it that it’s hard to make general sweeping statements about any one group of people or belief system. Can’t we step back and realize that it isn’t democrat or republican that is the problem but rich vs. poor? The whole system is broke and whether it is Obama or Bush doesn’t matter. And where do you get 232 million deaths attributable to Christianity? I am sure that if I dug deep enough I could come to a conclusion that most global terrorism is committed by soccer fans. And after all, 95.367% of all statistics are made up anyway.

While I don’t agree that bush is at fault here, he should have never created DHS, because under Obama this dept is engaged in things that don’t make any sense.

Yes and that is the problem with power and that is why the Founders limited Federal power.

As the Republic provides for a balance, where Good (Adherence to American Principle) steps back to allow Evil (Adherence to Foreign Ideas which Reject American Principle. SEE: Todd) to demonstrate what it does, and where you lift the gate of power to promote Good, you cannot lower the power when Evil comes to power.

This is what happens when the Flower children of the sixties, the militant Weather Underground terrorists, and the 60’s Marxist movement take control. They told us THEN what they would do, and THIS is the only thing any of them kept their word on! The Press and The Democrat politicians are systematically lying their way into destroying the nation.

@Taber. Why does no one bring that up? Bill Ayers is the puppet master. Obama’s been groomed for this at least from high school on, if not birth. Why is it whenever someone mentions that someone’s (Ayers) plan becomes evident we are labelled conspiracy theorists? Who besides George Soros’ $ is behind Ayers and this plan?

This is not complacency. This is treason of the first order: US Commanders, allowing the assassination of the most effective of the elite US Forces; meaning US Citizens in positions of trust and authority taking action which inarguably promote the interests of the enemy and in the process adhering to the needs and desires of that enemy.

This happened on Obama’s watch. This had nothing to do with Bush. I guarantee that if Bush was in office when this happened, he would’ve relied on his commanders and not some advisor like Dan Pfeiffer that somehow manages to advise while his heads stuck up his a$$

Its very difficult to get one’s head around this story. It does however ring a familiar tone with those that rang in Benghazi. The same devious plot, where US Citizens in position of power, plotted to murder Americans, aided and abetted by other US Citizens who prevented those capable of rendering aid and the TREASON, as literally defined by the US Constitution, is self evident. Yet, the power of the Congress, who is now the only body that possesses the constitutional power to shut the cabal down, is stunningly impotent. To ‘tell the truth’, would be nothing short of a confession of treason. I would love to hear SOMEONE offer a counter argument, wherein the actions detailed in this account are explained in such a way that justifies the ROEs and the refusal to authorize the taking down of enemy troops in the midst of an ongoing firefight. But as it stands, there is no potential for such ‘decisions’ to have come as a result of soundly reasoned justification. It’s just treason and I can’t see it ever being explained away, beyond the cries of “WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?”

What is the purpose of sending a helicopter into the heat of battle when the ROE says that they CANNOT fire on anyone until they take fire. The only purpose can be to get the men killed which is exactly what happened to SEAL team 6. The CH47D has the same Engine, powertrain and rotorsytem as the MH-47 and weighs over 10,000lbs less sitting side by side. How the hell do you come up with the assumption that it is lumbering compared to the MH47? It does have all the neat “gee whiz” stuff on it the CH doesn’t have, but as Lone Survivor and Robert’s Ridge demonstrated, that doesn’t help MH’s anymore than CH’s when it comes to RPGs. Don’t know about the rest of the article being true, but that is some pretty piss poor research out the gate.

The Chinook flew into a three hour fire fight with no escort. An AC-130 gunship was above watching the whole thing go down and was denied engagement twice. The issue is not so much about the aircraft, but the crews. Mr. West fails to mention that elite units train and operate with elite units. You do not throw a SWAT team in the back of a UPS van…. IT is not about performance, it is about mental capacity. I know it sounds like BS, but when you watch true tier 1 operators work with non-Tier 1 personnel you see the impact.

You could be no more wrong C. For some reason people think guardsmen are not good soldiers. I served there on CH-47D helicopters. They are faster and more maneuverable. As far as crews go both active and guard units shared missions and performed well. Take it from experience. So unless your talking from experience and have served there in that hell hole you do not need to talk about what you don’t understand. P.S. I pray you’re wrong, Greg. I earnestly hope the next Prez (or the one after that) will find Obama’s treason so egregious he’ll find it impossible to pardon him.

Kenny Thompson

I bet he’ll receive the pardon if we continue electing popular party candidates who serve the same corporate masters. Want to watch Obama rot? Help get Gov. Jesse Ventura elected. I can say for sure he’d make it his business to get to the bottom of this.

Excuse me? That POSER? Yes, he is a poser!!! Always has been, always will be. Wake up dude.

Um, no. This would be the same Jesse Ventura suing the widow of Chris Kyle? Yeah, HECK no.

I just read about this and on the surface I don’t have any problem with it. It seems reasonable for a public figure to use legal avenues to preserve ones reputation, especially when the story may become part of a movie. We all know how movies make things larger than life, just imagine how the story will play out on the screen. I can’t say that I blame him for the lawsuit. I will however do some research into Ventura’s drinking. A drunk with power scares me…. having said that, I’ve talked with several people from MN. who think highly… Read more »

The lawsuit was in place when Chris Kyle died ~ that part I have no problem with; let the courts sort it out.

But when Kyle was murdered, Ventura should have taken the high road and just dropped it. That would have been the honorable thing to do, but instead ~ and in the spotlight of sharp criticism ~ Ventura doubled down on Kyle’s widow.

It’s a lowdown thing to do and he self-destructed his own reputation. What is a man without honor?

Kenny Thompson

If this event wasn’t going to potentially be a part of a movie he may have done just that. While I have no idea what Mr. Ventura’s motives are I suspect he’s trying to keep Hollywood from doing a number on him. He speaking about things that are very important to our country, things like the popular parties being controlled by corporate interests and financially elite men. These same men would be able to influence how this played out in a motion picture. We all know movies based on actual events are often dramatized to sell tickets- and promote propaganda.… Read more »

It seems more and more evident that the pro-satan, government-owned media are totally against any and all honorable Americans. And we just seem to be content to just sit back and let them continue in any fashion that they choose, while we turn our heads and look the other way…AND CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THEM ! Will the American osterich ever get its head out of the sand??????

Anyone with any integrity in Washington should have immediately stood up and taken a stand against this. Instead, everyone sits back and waits for someone else to take the initiative. Americans were murdered and slaughtered and Washington just turns away like nothing ever happened. Our military is slowly being eliminated, I just read where 92 Air Force nuclear missile guardians in Montana , were put on leave for some “cheating test scandal”. If this Administration is not removed, our whole country is going to be destroyed.

It has been my opinion for quite a while that both parties are in this together; the NSA is being used to hamstring many – and the ones (less than a handful) being systematically smeared, singled out an destroyed.

The SEAL teams are supposed to be the best of the best. They are te pride of the US Special Forces, which is saying something. To hear about our country losing so many men so easily is a shame upon the whole military. They actually killed out best. In their war, they killed our best. Someone should answer for this, maybe it really was a mistake. Or maybe this is bigger, and the powers that be will deny any acknowledgement of this failure because we are America, we don’t fail.

I think the seals were set up by our government. I realize I could be wrong but who would send our men into traps like they were just like Benghazi

I have always believed Seal Team 6 were murdered by our Administration as part of a cover up. Obama was covering his ass about something that only these men knew.

Beckah

Not to mention the “rules for engagement” have changed starting in Viet Nam. We no longer send our troops in “armed” with the ability to win. We handcuff them from the beginning. I’m all for being a descent human being, but war is war, and you fight to WIN, and bring your men home – ALIVE. Period!
God Bless these men, their families, all of our military, but NEVER this administration.

Seal Team six was being punished for killing Ben Laden.

If Obamatollah is indeed a foreign ENEMY COMBATANT, then the Bin Laden raid was a sham, and SEAL TEAM 6 was killed to cover it up.

I will answer that: Yes – dhimmitude has to be paid – in this case – the lives of our warriors!

Facts first: This happened in 2011. Obama was in office as of 2009. Suddenly, all blame seems to be pushed toward Bush. Why? Someone trying to spin off the real responsibility because the truth is bad news for them. The SOBs who denied engaging sighted enemy should be arrested, tried and traced up the chain of command to the originator of the denial order, the change in manifest, and other acts that put our troops in danger without regard to security. I will bet that the real culprit is the red roach demeaning our White House, if one could trace… Read more »

Exactly. Upon watching the incredible documentary on TheBlazetv entitled “Fallen Angel,” (For The Record program) I’ve not been quite the same since. This was needless. Your last sentence sums up everything. I’ve seen Mr. & Mrs. Vaughn on the “Wilkow” program, which must have been a trial by fire for them to keep themselves composed. They are remarkable, as was their son. The other soldier, John Duandauga(sp) a special ops soldier with his SEAL Team dog, Bart, was just heartbreaking. They are together now as they were in life. “Rules of engagement(?)” I should imagine ‘the other side’ has nothing… Read more »

Well said FormerLadyLaw, it’s uncomprehendable to me that anyone can sit back and just keep going on like nothing is happening. The government that we elect to run our country, keep it safe, and protect our citizens does not exist right now. So many people feel there’s nothing they can do, but there is. We have a voice and we have a phone, continually call your government officials and spread the word to others.

My rules of engagement were and always have been those given me by a wise USMC Staff Sgt during the Vietnam war: Your job is NOT to die for your country but to make the enemy die for his! Ergo, threaten my life, that of my family or my teammates – you die! Police work post military has an adage: “Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6! Having ranted, let me now offer my heartfelt condolences and gratitude to all who lost loved ones as a result of this vile cowardice by POTUS, SecState, DoD, et.al. in… Read more »

Contrary to whatever official propaganda is churned out justifying restrictive “rules of engagement” as somehow protecting our front-line soldiers by keeping them out of questionable situations, the truth of the matter is that the real purpose of such rules, drawn up by weasel lawyers and bureaucrats, is to protect the reputations and careers of senior military brass and the civilian policymakers above them at the Pentagon, the State Dept. and the White House, by giving the big boys plausible deniability. If some unfortunate incident happens, they can piously insist with a straight face that whatever soldier X or field commander… Read more »

Colonel West has spoken about this matter and even put out a video addressing the whole issue, during his re-election campaign, I think. But there is a fairly decent summary:

I think these rules of engagement that our military people have to live with were put in to protect Obamas Muslim brothers. It only seems to be protecting and sparing them and does nothing to protect our soldiers. This president has chosen sides and he has not chosen our side and I think we all know where his allegiances are. In Europe and Israel where our strongest allies are they are mocking and laughing at us but our media will not report it. Check out the BBC and some of the actual real news around the world and you will… Read more »

The first time battlefield command was preempted from the Pentagon and the halls of Congress, we lost the true meaning of winning wars. War is killing people and blowing things up. That is why it should always be a last resort to conflict resolution. But if we are to ever win another war without the devastating loss of American lives, we must force civilian leaders out of the loop and give complete control of the battlefield back to those commanders on the ground and in the line of fire. It is easy to dictate rules of engagement from behind a… Read more »

Allen,

As this administration has stepped up the tempo and sent ‘advisors’ around the world, their propaganda arm (main stream media) has kept the silence …..

Our soldiers in VIETNAM (TODAY) deserve to be on the evening news, just as they were in 1970 ….

It’ sickening to see an author use such a tragic event and associate it with today’s administration just to sell book. There are far too many stories which serve as direct results due to the decisions our administration has made (pick one) but stay away from events you know little about. Looks as if the author has just “Betrayed” 31 American hero’s.
Good luck with the book!

This is why I said ‘NO!’ when my sons asked if I would be OK with them joining the military. I said ‘NO!’ not because I disrespect the military, on the contrary, but the current leadership has proven themselves wholly unworthy of my sons’ lives.
